One of the things that makes Aotearoa New Zealand special is Te Tiriti – an agreement signed between the British Crown and over 500 Māori rangatira (chiefs) in 1840. The spirit behind Te Tiriti is respect for each other and an intention to live well together. Today is the last day to make a submission. The deadline is 11.59pm tomorrow.

If it were to pass, new legislation would state the Government has the right to govern; authority and ownership of land and property of all New Zealanders are equal under the law. The Justice Committee will begin hearing in-person and video-link submissions on January 27, with hearings expected to last for weeks.

Make your submission here https://shorturl.at/bXWBx.

He eke waka noa - we're all in this together! ❤️🖤❤️

Meri Kirihimete, merry Christmas and blessings upon all faith communities on this celebration day - and most especially upon this hurting world, which we as followers of Jesus are called to love, pray for and serve.

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

As we move through the season of Advent and further into the beating heart of the Christmas message, let's reflect on the prayer:

Kia hora te marino
Kia whakapapa pounamu te moana
Hei huarahi mā tatou I te rangi nei
Aroha atu, aroha mai
Tātou i a tātou katoa.

(May peace be widespread. May the sea be like greenstone; a pathway for all of us this day. Let us show respect for each other, for one another. Bind us all together.)

🙏🙏🙏

Te Raranga has collaborated with a number of times this year around bicultural and Treaty issues and we agree, there is a need for honest, compassionate discussion around the Treaty Principles Bill. CGA is offering churches two options to gather submissions for this Bill:

Option 1) Run a 90-minute workshop. Gather to watch a video that includes:
• A refresher on what Te Tiriti o Waitangi says
• An introduction to 'Treaty Principles' by Dr Carwyn Jones
• An outline of what the Treaty Principles Bill proposes and how we believe it does not align with Te Tiriti
• How to have your say
• Time for people to write their own submission.

Option 2) Gather submissions at a Sunday service: Use our 5-minute video and submission guide, and invite your faith community to make a submission during or after a Sunday service.

For either of all the resources you need are at commongrace.nz/tpbgathersubmissions.

Another key link is commongrace.nz/treatyaction. This is where to direct individuals to make a submission online using our submission guides and other resources.

Te Raranga's collaborative event with (CGA) on Wednesday 30 October was a successful meeting with around 70 people and good content that seemed well received. We appreciated being able to work alongside Kate Day, co-director for CGA. Ngā mihi Kate.

We extend our thanks to for his warm, capable MCing and to our speakers Stan, Allen and Jolyon - to whom each was given a thank you copy of Keith Newman's 'Ratana the Prophet’.

This past week has also been significant with the hikoi to parliament, opposing the Treaty Principles Bill - beginning in Te Tai Tokerau - culminating today at Parliament. Some of you may have joined at points along the way. Some will be present today. Others may still be wanting to understand a bit more about the Bill. Dr. Samuel Carpenter has put some reflections together here at https://shorturl.at/EA6h5 unpacking where the concept of 'Treaty Principles' comes from and giving us more context.

It's a heart journey, and we know there is always more to learn about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the way it affects our lives. 'Together for Te Tiriti' has gathered a handful of helpful resources to help us understand the Principles of Te Tiriti to the potential for constitutional transformation. These resources are merely an introduction to the wealth of good information that exists in books, blogs, websites and podcasts. Kā mihi nui to ActionStation Aotearoa.

Our pleasure to support Ngā Manu Kōrihi Ōtautahi in the leadup to Parihaka Day (5th Nov) in this day of collaboration, friendship and manaakitanga with and 's in the honoring of two of this country's lighthouse leaders, Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti-o-Rongomai. True, 1881 is a distant time but the Parihaka message still remains fresh and relevant today: "Though the lions rage, still I am for peace."

30/10/2024

As discussed at yesterday's meeting with Kate Day, Common Grace Aotearoa (CGA), the coming week of 18 November is a big one. The government will introduce a Treaty Principles Bill that many see as undermining of Māori rights under Te Tiriti and destabilising the journey of reconciliation and redress in Aotearoa.

Even if the bill never becomes law, the conversations about it will influence how the Treaty is understood by many in the years to come. Together we can help to ensure the conversation is truthful and compassionate.

During the season of Advent, invites you to gather submissions in your faith community or with a group of friends and have your say on the Treaty Principles Bill.

This can be done either in the form of a 90-minute video workshop to learn what the bill proposes and the key concerns about it, and to make submissions opposing the Bill together. Or, at a Sunday church service using a 5-minute video and submission guide. (Some churches play the short video in their notices slot, then invite people to write submissions over morning tea.) Common Grace will provide all the resources you need.

The Treaty Principles Bill will go to first reading on Thursday 21 November, 2024, then to Select Committee for the public to have their say. Common Grace are encouraging people to gather submissions between Monday 25 November and Sunday 15 December.

Please join Te Raranga tonight at Northcity Church as we collaborate with Common Grace Aotearoa to explore what Christians response might be to the current 'Treaty Principles Bill', presented by local Christian speakers Stan Tawa (Te Raranga Bicultural Committee), Allen Hou (Asian Community Transformational Trust) and Jolyon White (Anglican Advocacy). Common Grace Aotearoa co-director, Kate Day, will also share how we can be involved in gathering submissions to Parliament.

Come early for a cuppa at 7pm (Northcity Church, 95a Sawyers Arms Road, Papanui). The meeting begins at 7.30pm. A small donation/koha to help cover costs is appreciated. Mā te wā. 🙋🧏‍♂️💁

"I was honoured to attend the Kiingitanga hui at Tuahiwi marae on Tuesday, along with Stan and Merekaraka and a very large crowd! What an inspiring hui, to see the genuine Kotahitanga (which included some really healthy debate!) and the vision for practical expressions of tino rangatiratanga. So powerful to experience in this Māori space, through te reo Māori, with a clear Māori Kaupapa, how mana enhancing this is, and how beneficial this would be to us all in Aotearoa NZ. A vision for the future, experienced in the now." - Donald Scott, Te Raranga
