Sweet, shy little Billy!

Billy, the tabby kitten, was a little bit nervous to begin with yesterday, during her day stay with us. Billy was in for her spey 🩺 procedure and microchip. As we do with all cats, Billy’s microchip number was registered with New Zealand Companion Animal Register 👏🏻

After her surgery, Billy became quite content on her 💕 comforty bed and heat pad. All snuggled up and happily enjoyed some lunch.

Although, she wasn’t too pleased with us when we fitted her with a soft collar from CoolCollars Lyttelton. She was definitely not impressed with us 🤣

We understand when your dog or cat becomes sick or injured, it's a stressful time. Especially, with this current climate/economy, times are tough!

Having pet Insurance can take away some of the stress and 💰 financial burden. Removing the element of financial restraints for 💉 treatment(s) required.

A simple explanation of pet insurance- it's a policy 📁 that you have for your pet(s), to help you to pay for expect and unexpected vet bills.

In New Zealand we have a healthcare 🏥 system in place, but animals don't a have the same luxury and have to rely on their owners to provide care for them. As pets are considered a luxury and not a necessity, the pet industry doesn't 🙅🏼‍♀️ receive any subsidised and/or support by our government.

Meaning, if your pet becomes unwell or injured, the financial burden falls on you, their owner. Vaccinations, health checks, surgeries etc can cost hundreds of dollar.

Not too mention, 🚨 emergency treatment or specialist referrals can cost into the thousands. Unfortunately, we understand (and see) how heartbreaking 💔 it is, when owners need to say goodbye to their pets if they can't afford the treatment .

Too often owners don't think about the benefits of having pet insurance until they're faced with a 🫣 large vet bill that could have been avoided.

In a wonderful world, we would love it be able to offer free or discounted 🩺 veterinarian services, medications etc but all vet clinics are a business and need money to operate and do their job.

If you are preparing or looking into adding a new four-legged addition to your family, it's important to consider taking out pet insurance.

A lot of companies, such as 🩵 Southern Cross Pet Insurance, offer a 6 weeks FREE cover & no obligation for to join with them.

We recommend looking into pet insurance companies, check out each their different policies and see what will benefit your pet & your budget 👌🏼

There are a few vaccines 💉 available for kittens and cats in New Zealand. We personally, use the Nobivac range (Tricat Trio & Ducat) in clinic.

These 2 vaccines actually work in conjunction 🤞🏻 to provide your cat with full protection against:

Feline Panleucopaenia (feline distemper), Feline Herpes Virus (upper respiratory and eye infection), Feline Calicivirus Virus (respiratory infection and oral disease) 🦠

All of these are highly contagious 😷 and it’s important to provide protection in kittens and adult cats, with their regular vaccines.

Our vaccine protocols, as advised from the manufacturer, is starting the Nobivac Tricat Trio vaccine when the 🐱 kitten is 8-9 weeks. 2 doses are required, so a booster vaccine is then given 3-4 weeks later.

As per the infograph, we will give both vaccines in conjunction- the Tricat Trio is every 🗓️ 3 years and the Ducat in between. Annual visits with us, means your cat(s) will have regular health checkups - great way to keep on-top of any health concerns 👏🏻

Bruno the 40kg Burmese Mountain dog 🖤

This handsome dude was in for his castration procedure this week. A big ball of fluff!

Bruno wasn’t our “routine” castration, as he had cryptorchidism - when one testicle is undescended and still in the abdomen. Don’t worry, Dr Peter removed both testicles during his surgery 👌🏼.

✨ Thanks Bruno for being brilliant!

Meet Goose 👋🏻

Sweet wee Goose, is just over a year old. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had the best start in life with multiple homes and having some traumatic experiences 🥺.

Thankfully, Goose is now with his perfect 💕 family and they absolutely adore him. Most importantly, they understand, they need to take things at Goose’s speed and work with him.

We got to meet Goose for the first time last week, for his castration procedure with 👨🏻‍⚕️ Dr Jameson. We did have to muzzle him for his anaesthetic induction- for his safety and our own, otherwise he was such a great boy!

Well done Goose 🧡 - you super star!

Cheeky Lola, the French Bulldog ♥️

Lola the 6 month old Frenchie, is not only full of beans and a cheeky character, but her love language is showering everyone in affection!

In hindsight, Lola probably wasn’t the best model for the new range of wipeable soft collars from CoolCollars Lyttelton. I don’t think sitting still is in Lola’s vocabulary 🤣

Triplets Export to Japan ✈️

Sora Kosuke, Neon Wolf & Princess Grace are all beautiful Siamese, that came to see Dr Ulrike on Tuesday for their pre-export check to Japan 🇯🇵.

Desiree from Star Pet Travel was looking after these three and making sure their journey is a success and as stress free as possible for them.

We can confirm, everyone 🎉 passed their health check with flying colours.

Megan, the dental hygienist from FLOSS Oral Hygiene - showing that all teeth need to be looked after! 👏🏻 Just like us, it’s important to maintain your pet’s dental hygiene. They too need regular teeth brushing, dental treats and diets. A brush 🪥 a day, keeps the vet away! As you can see, Winston the Labrador, isn’t too bothered about having his 🦷 teeth brushed. We spy some ear mites! 🕵🏻‍♂️ Nugget was in his annual vaccinations with 👨🏻‍⚕️ Dr Jameson yesterday afternoon. While completing his general health examination on 🐱 Nugget, Dr Jameson saw Nugget’s ear was slightly swollen at the base. After looking down the ear canal and taking a swab for the 🔬microscope, the culprit was found. A nasty infestation of ear mites! Thankfully, a simple treatment of the Bravecto Plus for Cats was applied. Bravecto Plus is often used for the treatment of ear mites 👏🏻

Wondered what's in your cat’s core vaccine? 🐈‍⬛ At Avonhead Vets we use the Nobivac Tricat & Nobivac Ducat vaccines - we alternate between these two vaccines from kitten, to adult and geriatric cats. Our kitten vaccine protocols is 1st Nobivac Tricat vaccine can be given from eight weeks of age, followed by a booster vaccine three to four weeks later when 🐱 kitten is over 12 weeks of age. Nobivac Tricat is given at one year of age, then every three years thereafter – in between years, a Nobivac Ducat is administered 👩🏼‍⚕️. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁-𝗢𝗻! Here is a quick videos, one of our lovely vet nurses is demonstrating how to apply a 20-40kg Bravecto Spot-On for a dog. Bravecto Spot-On is 6 months flea and 4 months tick protection for dogs in a single dose. The solution is absorbed through your dog's skin, and the application site dries quickly. 𝙸𝚗𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚞𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜: 1: You twist the lid, to open the product. Please be aware, lid DOES NOT come off. 2: Apply the solution by 1 to 4* spots along the dog’s spine, from the shoulder to the base of the tail. 3: Let the solution dry, making sure not to wet or touch the areas you’ve just applied. *dogs size depend on how many spots. We recommend 1 for XS, 2 for S, 3 for M and 4 L & XL.
