Primrose & her Megacolon Condition 🥺

🩵 Primrose, 12 year old British Shorthair, was an absolute trooper during her time with us, receiving treatment for megacolon.

Unfortunately, Primrose who was diagnosed with megacolon years ago, had a nasty flare up recently, where she became so constipated and blocked up with 💩 faeces, she became quite ill.

Megacolon is a condition where colon (the large intestine) becomes abnormally large and stretched, losing its ability to effectively contract and pass faeces.

I’m sure we can all agree, not being able to pass 💩 faeces and being constipated is horrendous and extremely painful.

We had Primrose on IV fluids, supportive care and enemas to help clear the backed up, hardened blockage of 💩 faeces. We successfully removed most of it during her 3 day stay with us.

Primrose is on a special diet (high fibre) and medications (oral laxatives) to help keep her bowel regular. Hopefully, it’ll prevent her Megacolon flare ups 🤞🏼

We can confirm, she is the most beautiful character, who loves pats and brushing. She has a cute little old lady meow 😍🥰

Margot 💙’s her Fibor!

Margot, 10 year old Labrador Retriever, has been on Fibor for a few years now. Poor Margot, like so many dogs, suffer from 💩 a**l gland issues. Margot happily “wolfs down the Fibor sprinkled onto her evening biscuits - doesn't notice that she's being medicated”.

Fibor contains a unique blend of 6 natural fibre sources and kiwi fruit 🥝 that support healthy digestion and promote regular, consistent bowel movements, preventing a**l gland blockages & issues. It’s truly an underrated product!

Margot’s family were more than happy for her to be of the ✨ poster dogs for Fibor. They said this product has been a game changer for Margot! 👏🏽

Margot no longer requires regular visits to us for a**l gland expressions and having the Fibor being tasty, it’s so easy to give = “that's a win for us!”

Thank you to Margot’s family for sharing their feedback & letting us share it 😊

Sadly, there is a significant increase of the fatal Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) here in Canterbury. Your dog’s main defence is immunity from their routine vaccines. In fact, parvo is highly preventable through vaccination.

We offer the Nobivac DHP (protects against Distemper, Hepatitis & Parvovirus) vaccine for only $89 per dog - this includes the consult, vaccine, full health check, nail trim and a cheeky test from the treat jar. Bonus, you can even pay using Afterpay ($22.25 fortnightly!).

Parvo is a highly contagious viral disease 🦠 that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness, including vomiting and bloody diarrhoea, in dogs. They develop high fever, loss of appetite and lethargy.

Dogs can catch parvo by directly contacting 💩 faeces containing the virus (e.g. sniffing/licking/eating), as well as indirectly by contacting contaminated objects such as food/water bowls or 👞 footwear. Signs typically occur within 5-7 days of being exposed.

Unfortunately, while all dogs can be affected, the most vulnerable to parvo are unvaccinated puppies, immunocompromised and elderly unvaccinated dogs.

If caught early and with ❤️‍🩹 intensive treatment, some dogs will survive. However, the level of care and isolation required to treat them will come with a substantial cost, running into the thousands of dollars 🥺

You can also vaccine against Canine Cough (Kennel Cough) at the same time. We offer the Nobivac DHP and Kennel Cough vaccine together for $107.

The importance of Elizabethan Collars 🌻

Our team will discuss what an Elizabethan Collar is and their 🚨 important role in your pet’s recovery after their surgery, at their discharge appointment.

Elizabethan collars, also known as e-collars or "cones of shame," are crucial for 🚫 preventing your pet from self-trauma after surgery or injury, ensuring proper healing and preventing infection by restricting access to wounds.

We also use Elizabethan Collars in cases of skin conditions, to prevent pets from over-grooming or licking areas with 🌱 skin irritations or allergies.

Elizabethan Collars must be worn until the wound/surgical site has ✔️ fully healed. Depending on the nature of the surgery and recovery, it may be as short as a few days, or as long as a few weeks.

Other alternatives include a Soft Collar, Inflatable Collars, rolled up large bath towel that’s secured with duct tape or even a pool noodle.

If you need assistance on the best option for your pet, please feel free to chat with our team 😊

Mimi was definitely a first.. Dr Grace, Dr Peter and Dr Jameson were flabbergasted to see Mimi’s radiographs! 😲

Mimi was brought into us a few weeks ago, she was VERY sick, had lost a lot of weight and very lethargic. Her worried owner (who had been overseas 🌎 for last few months) rushed Mimi into us.

It was a team effort! Mimi was being cared for by Dr Grace, Dr Jameson & Dr Peter, a lot of experience and knowledge 👏🏽 🧠

Full work up- included bloodwork, ultrasounds and radiographs. 🩸Bloodwork showed her kidneys was under a lot of stress and severely compromised. Plus, her body was fight off a nasty infection 🥺

More importantly, the imaging showed Mimi had a deceased kitten in her abdomen, and it was causing life threatening sepsis.

Mimi received intensive care of IV fluid therapy, medications and supportive care to help her become well enough for the life saving surgery she needed. Mimi was incredibly sick and there was no guarantee she would make it to surgery.

After 72 hours, Mimi was strong enough for surgery! 🎉 Dr Peter performed the surgery, removing a mummified kitten that had ruptured through her uterus, into the abdomen. Mimi was also desexed at the same time.

We are extremely happy to report, Mimi is one tough cat and has recovered from her surgery. She was amazing throughout this whole process! ♥️
