Sitting on scales can be weird for dogs who are not used to it! Even if they know how to sit, dogs can get a little confused in new contexts, but luckily there are things we can do to help. Toast has been trained to sit on a towel at home, and her towel can be brought along and placed on the scales at the vet so she knows where she is going! This is a great trick for dogs who don't like to keep their butts on the scales at the vet. It can also help them feel more relaxed in the waiting room or in consult as they have a familar bed and place to sit. #northlandsanimalcarehospital #vetclinicchch #nzcatsanddogs #vetclinic #christchurchvet #christchurchvetclinic
Erica and Toast are back again to teach you how to brush your dogs teeth!
Remember to start small. Get your pup used to their teeth being touched - with lots of rewards every time they wait - before introducing a brush or toothpaste. Use a treat (or regular kibble) or toy that they love, and start off small. If they already know the command 'wait', touch their lip or teeth for a few seconds before rewarding them.
Repeat this process several times, rewarding them for each time they allow you to touch their teeth without pulling away. Eventually you can try rubbing their teeth with your finger or a baby toothbrush, slowly building up the whole process! Go slowly and work with your pup to make this fun, and let us know if you are having trouble.

Sweet Toast has had several foot injuries already in her young life and is quite worried about her feet being touched. Dr Erica has started working with her to make nail trimming a positive experience.
If your dog doesn't like nail trims or is anxious about their feet being touched, you can start training them to voluntarily participate in this process! Use a treat (or regular kibble) or toy that they love, and start off small. If they already know the command 'wait', touch their foot for a few seconds before rewarding them.
Repeat this process several times, rewarding them for each time they allow you to touch their feet without pulling away. Eventually you can try picking up their foot or holding the nail clippers to their claws, slowly building up the whole process! Go slowly and work with your pup to make this fun, and let us know if you are having trouble!
