Big thumbs up from Julene and Raewyn who sat in this morning to see the CODC adopt new rules allowing fenced Dog Parks to now be permitted in Central! In the New Year the Cromwell Dog Park Committee will be rounding up all who would like to be involved in the fun part of getting creative with design ideas for Cromwell's own possible facility. In the meantime please snap a few pics if you visit dog parks in your holiday travels to gather ideas. Merry Xmas to you and your four-legged friends and please Share this post!

Lets get this done!!! Please act now.
There is a list of suggestions below to help with the Dog Park questions or add your own. Tell the CODC your priorities
This link takes you to the Proposed changes to Policy and Bylaw with the online submission form.
Alpha St site (next to Bowling Club) has been suggested as its

1. Already designated as a Dog Exercise Area

2. Has adequate parking on Alpha Street and beside the north end of the Bowling Club for shared use

3. Close to Toilet Block amenities

4. Close to rubbish bins already being emptied by Council contractors

5. Some existing established trees, room to add more plantings without blocking lake views for residents

6. No major clearing of land required before fencing

7. Easy access to Alpha Street water main for irrigation and drinking water

8. Easy access for disabled dog owners as the ground is level and no steps required

9. Dog Parks have been shown to be highly utilised by dog owners in other towns and cities.

10. Easy to find, especially for the travelling public and newcomers with dogs

11. The high number of registered dogs in Cromwell

12. Secure area away from heavy traffic

13. Not having to share walking and cycling tracks for dog exercise

14. Good visibility for the security of users, including passive surveillance from passers-by

15. Social benefits for dogs learning to socialise in a controlled environment, which in turn can reduce aggressive behaviour issues with some dogs

16. Social benefits & good mental health benefits for owners with same interests (‘bumping’ places in the community). Sharing knowledge between dog owners

17. Tracks around the lake side can be dangerous for exercising dogs, especially with barley grass seeds, speeding cyclists, and broken bottles and other litter.

18. Exercising means less barking dogs incidences causing complaints from neighbours

19. Allows a Course venue for Dog Trainers in a secure environment

20. Provides a meeting place for Same Breed Groups from around Otago region and also for informal dog owner get-togethers

21. Place to share dog-related news and events

22. Poison has been dropped around Cromwell which excludes dogs from some areas

23. A Dog Park is a public asset and much appreciated and used by visitors and Cromwell residents

24. Keeps dogs away from triggers that cause them to flee/react ie. Gas guns, bird scarers, loud motorbikes and cars and skateboards

25. Proximity to the lake for keeping dogs cool after an exercise work out as it is away from the designated safe swimming area opposite the children’s playgr

We've reviewed Council's Dog Control Bylaw and Policy and are now we're keen to hear what you think. The aim of these documents is to recognise the community and health benefits of dog ownership while addressing public safety concerns and legal requirements. As it is often difficult to find a good balance, we want to check and see if we’ve got it right.

So, whether you are a dog owner or not, we invite you to check out our proposed bylaw and policy and give us your feedback.

Proposed changes to the new bylaw and policy include:
🐾 Allowing for the establishment of fenced dog parks
🐾 Clarifying on and off leash areas for dogs, in addition to prohibited areas
🐾 Providing guidance on the rehoming of dogs and their welfare in emergencies
🐾 Allowing temporary exceptions to the policy and bylaw
🐾. Introducing an administration fee for processing refunds.

Submissions close at 5pm Monday 6 July 2020.

The Statement of Proposal (a high level summary), Proposed Policy and Proposed Bylaw are all available to read at the link below then you can make an online submission.

We are making progress so watch this space!
At the 18th May meeting CODC deferred a decision on the changes to the Dog Bylaw, which included allowing a fenced Dog Park in Cromwell and Clyde until their next meeting, this Wednesday 3 June. It was to allow a meeting scheduled with The Mayor, relevant CODC Staff and Cromwell Community and Vincent Boards to discuss and give a recommendation. This was the only item on the agenda.
The proposal to these changes was agreed in principle and will now go back to CODC meeting which will be held in Alexandra at the council offices on Wednesday 3 June 2020.
Unfortunately there will be NO live streaming of this meeting.
Agenda can be viewed on the CODC Website, search meetings. Document attached to the agenda relating to the Dog bylaw is on page 373

CODC ran a free session for dogs and their owners at the Alpha Street Dog Exercise area, Cromwell last weekend. It was well attended by sixteen dogs who were shown the correct way for dogs on lead to meet and greet new k9's amongst other great tips for owners to get better behaviour/obedience. My dog Grace enjoyed having the lake to cool off after being out in the heat.

From CODC Noticeboard 7/11/19
We’ve roped in Pepper the Dalmatian to help us grab your attention. He wants you to get that tongue wagging and talk dogs with us! We’re reviewing our Dog Control Policy and Bylaw and want to hear from you. Whether you are a dog owner or not, your input is important. Head to www.surveymonkey.com/r/pawsforthought to share your views on various topics about dogs by the end of November. Not online? Contact our customer services team for a hard copy of the survey.
