You may remember Artie who we sold at the end of last year? He’s back with us as his new owner had a change in circumstances so this lovely boy is looking for a new home 🏡

Artistry (Artie)

16.2hh, 9yo gelding by Skilled.

Artie is well schooled on the flat, he works nicely in a frame, and is forward and responsive without being hot. Artie is currently schooling 90cm and proving to be bold and honest. He has had limited competition experience but has done two seasons of pony club, and is well behaved to take out, and be in a group situation. He has done plenty of hacking, been to the beach multiple times and been to many different arenas for hires etc.

Artie is great to handle and good to catch, float, shoe, dentist, respects tape etc. He is good to ride alone or in company, and doesn’t get clingy to others. He is a lovely, honest horse, has a great personality and just enjoys being involved.

Artie is a heap of fun to ride and loves his work. He would be an awesome first hack for a capable teen coming off ponies, or would suit an adult wanting a fun all rounder.

Looking for a new home 🏡

Chief is a 7 year old, 14.2hh (home measured) Gisborne Bred gelding. Chief is a kind, uncomplicated pony who is easy to have around and has the ability to excel in any discipline. He is easy to handle, honest and safe. Chief has established basic flatwork. He works nicely in a frame with big, expressive strides. Chief has a soft mouth and is ridden in a snaffle.

Chief is perfect to take out, not phased by the warm-up ring, happy to stand by himself at the float/truck and doesn't call out to other horses. Chief is an honest jumper who has a promising, springy jump and has all the attributes to make a competitive jumping pony with more experience. With his previous owner, Chief has been out to the beach, forest, training days and local arenas. He has also hunted where he was perfectly happy to watch hounds and other horses galloping past him. Chief has also been to an inhand competition where he placed in every class as well as Reserve Champion. He has competed at a couple of mini ODE’s at 65cm level where he jumped clear. With his current owner he has competed in multiple dressage shows.

The little boys came in for a pamper today 🧼

Dan (pinto) is a yearling by ES Dimero NN Z and out of Kea. He’s getting very tall!

Basil (bay) is a 2yo bush pony from the Far North. He’s little at about 13.3hh but definitely thinks he’s the man 😂

Change of code last weekend for Mango and Bruno at the Coatesville PC Mini ODE ☀️

Mango in the 95cm class was 6th in the dressage, clear showjumping and was flying around the xc until he thought the scary ditch was going to eat him 🙈

Bruno in the 80cm class won the dressage and jumped double clear to come 1st overall 🥇

Big weekend at Waitemata World Cup Show this weekend ☀️

Pixie and Bruno headed out to the training day on Friday with Pixie jumping clear around the 95cm and 1m. Bruno jumped clear around the 1m, and stepped up to his first 1.10m to jump clear too!

Swapped the team over for Sunday with Mouse and Poppy on the float. Mouse jumped a great 1.05m for just the last rail, and Poppy jumped the 1.25m with a couple of tired rails at the end.

Very happy with all 4 horses but Bruno might have got star of the show so the video of his 1.10m is below ⬇️

You’ve bought your dream horse and suddenly, the wheels have come off.

What’s gone wrong? He’s spooky, he won’t go soft and round, he’s hard to catch and now, he’s pulling back when tied! Don’t panic. There’s a chance you’ve bought the wrong horse... but there’s a bigger chance Mr. Right is homesick.

Stay in touch with his last owner or take some lessons with the former trainer, if you can. Stick with his old feed schedule and the same amount of turn out time. Double check that you’re using the same type of bit and that your saddle fits. Just do your utmost, for the next while, to replicate his old riding and turnout.

Yes, get riding. This flies in the face of a lot of advice but you want to keep him moving and keep going over the basics. You want to do this, for as a sale horse, it is likely that he was in a program with daily riding, before he sold. When we bring home this horse and just turn him out, he falls off the turnip cart of life.

I mention this because I have sold so many horses and ponies who were going beautifully at the time of selling and because the new owners were nervous, rather than ask for help, they did not ride the horse. Months later, they begin and now, they've the extra challenge of learning on an unridden, fresh horse.

Now, you mightn't always have to do it this way! But when you brought home your dream horse, you suddenly rocked his world. He has found himself among strange customs, in a strange land. His friends are gone and you’re in his space... a complete stranger who wants to bond. He’s the new kid in town and the new herd wants nothing to do with him.

It helps to meet him half way, by doing things 'his way', for a while. This isn't a contest. Nobody's keeping score. Yet how many of us feel that we need to 'reschool' a horse the minute we get him into our hands? We totally dismiss the idea that we liked this horse well enough last week, to buy him!

If this horse was a child, we'd know instinctively that he was homesick, that he was upset and that he wants to go home.

While he's working on acceptance, please don’t bribe him or try to remake him. Be safe, be fair, be constant. Give him lots of opportunity to work off his troubles. In time—six days? six weeks? six months? If he was a good horse when you bought him, if you do what you need to do to keep him in basic work with empathy and understanding, he will come around.

Remember, a horse’s level of homesickness has little to do with the level to which he is trained!

This is the horse who was (and still is) a good horse, though he may well feel different from the horse you met and bought. This is not the horse who was somehow 'misrepresented' and sold to you as a whole other bag of goods.

While many horses can change homes and not blink an eye or look back, there are a similar percentage of good, well-educated horses who have trouble with fundamental change in their lives (either in handling, herd life or location), or are challenged with regulating their emotions and stress levels.

They need patience and understanding. We sometimes forget that, in the excitement of writing that cheque...

Papatoetoe PC SJ Day 4️⃣

Just took Poppy and Bruno out to PPC on Sunday for their first winter outing.

▪️ Poppy was clear in the 1.05m and had the last rail in the 1.10m (my fault 🙈).

▪️ Bruno was clear for 5th 🏅 in the 70cm and also clear in the 80cm.
