πŸͺ Poor Olive got into a spot of bother when her owner was cleaning out his boat this morning. She was investigating something fishy and got a new piercing in her upper lip!

πŸ’– As you can see from the first photo she is now feeling much better and has gone home with some pain relief and antibiotics.

β˜€οΈ With summer just around the corner there will be more people out fishing so this is a timely reminder for all of us to use caution with our pets around fishing equipment and actively supervise them during walks on the beach.

🎣 If you love to go fishing yourself we urge you to responsibility and safely dispose of your fishing lines wherever possible as this problem effects not only domesticated pets but our precious wildlife, too!

Disease Spotlight: Leptospirosis

❓️What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis (also known as Lepto) is a bacterial disease that primarily affects the liver and kidneys.

❓️How common is it?
It's less common where routine vaccination against it is widespread, however outbreaks can happen due to the many different strains of the disease and lower vaccination rates.

❓️ How does my dog get the disease?
It's mainly from rats and mice but can be carried by any mammal- cows for example. It can also be contracted by infected garbage or swimming in water (with thin or damaged skin) contaminated by rodent urine, etc.

❓️I'm a mammal, can I get Lepto?
Yes! Lepto is a zoonotic disease meaning it can affect humans but is readily killed by most household cleaners. There is a higher rate of infection with farmers and meat workers in New Zealand, but there were also outbreaks as a result of the flooding from Cyclone Gabrielle. If you feel unwell please consult your Doctor.

❓️ What symptoms will my dog have?
Clinical signs can vary greatly between dogs depending on their vaccination history, immune system and what strain they have been exposed to. Please see the image for some of the signs you may see, unfortunately there is a wide range and they are non-specific so if your dog is unwell please book a consult with your Vet.

❓️ What is the treatment?
Certain antibiotics may be effective in the fight against Lepto in the early stages in the disease. It is important to note that Lepto can be deadly.

❓️ How can I protect my dog?
Vaccination offers your dog their best protection against Lepto. In 2024 the WSAVA recommended that the Lepto vaccination is added to the core vaccinations in areas where the disease is occurring regularly in the community.

❓️ How do I get more information?
Click here to access some more detailed information about Lepto from our online pet library: https://www.druryvets.co.nz/pet-health-resources/pet-health-articles/articles/?rid=833

If you need to check if you dog is up to date with their vaccinations please call us on (09) 294 8779 as there have been cases in South Auckland this year.

UPDATE (end of business day): Despite multiple attempts by us to contact a potential Owner unfortunately we were unable to reach them. As a result of the closure of our clinic for the weekend this beautiful dog has been handed over to Animal Management and they will continue to attempt to find it's owner. We really hope they manage to reunite them. Please contact Animal Management directly if you feel this may be your dog. Thank you!

πŸ§Ÿβ€β™‚οΈ Happy Halloween πŸ¦Ήβ€β™‚οΈ

With this tradition growing in popularity here in New Zealand here are a couple of things to keep in mind tonight:

☠️ Sweet treats, such as chocolate and the artificial sweetener Xyitol, can be highly toxic to our pets so keep them out of reach! If your pet ingests anything unusual please call a Vet for advice 🍬

πŸ‘©β€βš–οΈ Pets can't understand strangers dressed up in costume coming to your door and it may be unsettling for them. Consider keeping them in a calm room away from your front door. 🀑

πŸ‘» We wish you all a safe and happy Halloween if you choose to partake in the tradition! 🀺

This week is Vet nurse and Vet tech awareness week. We'd like to do a huge shout out to all those wonderful nurses and techs who put their heart and soul into what is not just a job, but a vocation.
In particular our own amazing nurses at Town and Country vets, Christina-Jane, Amie and Sophie.

One of our nurses, Amie, has just returned for California where she attended a conference.

This was the sign in one of the local cat-only Vey practises in L.A- what do you think, something we should do here? 😜

We are very fortunate to have amazing nurses here at Town and Country vets. Our nurses really hold the clinic together and provide excellent continuity of care for our lovely patients.
They also do nurse consults to complement the veterinary consults, and have a great rapport with clients
Christina-Jane is our head nurse, and juggles the job with her own two very busy 18 month old twins! She has been working at Town and Country for over 6 years now, aside from a short break for maternity leave, and loves working here thanks to our lovely client base. She is extremely competent and takes great pride in giving individualised care to each animal. She is really enjoying some of the more interesting surgical cases we have seen lately, and loves scrubbing in on these whenever she gets the chance.
