Corinne's litter has pigment! Looks like one berk, two hooded, and five that are too light to tell. One of those hoods has a super cool diagonal pattern down her back.

Corinne gave birth to eight super cute, big, healthy, jellybeans last night :)) It looks like an even 4/4 split of black eyes and red eyes (not sure if that'll be champagne, silver fawn, or albino yet).
She's being super happy and calm, I gave her a chicken foot bribe and she let me in to count the babies and check on them.
Khione should give birth tonight, hopefully!

Medieval rat art sure was something... In other news, I'm pairing Aurora Honey and Luna Corinne.
This is a super exciting litter for me - Honey is stunning with a really nice, round face and an excellent temperament. Corinne is a variegated agouti girl with the sweetest temperament, and I'm expecting some really exciting colours and markings because the variegation in her line is super strong. Her first litter to a non-variegated rat produced some strong variegation, so I'm excited to see what comes from her litter with Honey.
This litter should be mostly agouti and fawn, with the possibility of silver fawn and mink, and a very slim possibility for PEW.

This funky little dude is the only baby from my Khione x Willem litter! Khione unfortunately abandoned the entire litter at birth and ate most of them. Anahera was able to partially foster him with her litter, but because he was so much smaller than her babies I had to half hand-raise him.
His name is Eepie, and he's the cutest, strangest, little dude.

Guadalupe has given birth to 13 gorgeous, healthy, bubs, and Corinne has given birth to 11 babies :))

Hi team, I just wanted to make a quick post on wild versus domestic rats :)) Domestic rats don't do well in the wild, so it's important to call the SPCA or another rescue if you think that there's a domestic rat in your house.
Wild Rattus norwegicus are almost always agouti in New Zealand - brown with black tick marks. If a rat is fully agouti, or agouti with a black belly, they're more likely a wild rat.
Rattus Rattus, the other most common species of rats in New Zealand, are a lot smaller and more slender, and usually black or agouti.
Kiore rats are the smallest species found in New Zealand.
Domestic rats can also come in black and agouti, and domestic rats tend to be a lot rounder and squishier. They don't have the same long faces and tails, and they'll usually happily approach people and not bite.
I've attached a few pictures of how to tell the difference between Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus.
If you see any rats that aren't agouti or black, call the SPCA or feel free to send me a message and I can lend you a live trap :))

Hey team,
I'm really sorry for not making this post earlier. Unfortunately Khione appears to have either miscarried or reabsorbed her babies, not quite sure which. She's back in with her sisters now getting some care from the girls.
I'm still expecting Delilah to give birth around New Years Day, and her pregnancy is still going without a hitch.
In happier news, I've recently picked up a whole bunch of rats from another registered breeder who is taking a break from breeding, including some super exciting colours and markings!

still no babies!! but mama Khione has made an insanely elaborate nest and dragged my hand in to give me a bath 😂
I also paired Craig and Delilah today, so expect updates on that soon!!
Khione should have her babies between tomorrow and Sunday :)

Still hoping to be able to confirm Khione’s pregnancy, but she’s gaining weight and Ive got the maternity cage set up!

Brilliant news! Misty Mischief Aurora (Khione) and Red Rivers Craig have been together for the past ten days, and Khione has gained 22 grams in that time which is a great indicator of pregnancy!

Craig is three years and two months old, and has never had a respiratory infection, tumour, aggression, or hind leg degeneration in that entire time. He's ancient (for a rat) and still so active and snuggly, so I'm really excited for his litter. His brother is the exact same so there's a great chance that his good health is genetic.

Hi everyone!
I'm so excited to be the first registered breeder south of Ōtautahi/Christchurch. I'm working on fawn rats, and long-lived super healthy rats.
I've been keeping rats for years. They're such fantastic pets - snuggly, intelligent, and so sweet. My pocket puppies are my best friends and I really think they're the greatest animals in the world.
I'm looking forward to getting to know the rat community here, and make rats more accessible to Te Waipounamu.
