Up early to harvest these spring onions, before temps hit the mid 20s. Transplanted in 4-5s they've grow really well. The bed previously had a crop of micro peashoots, which I tarped for a couple of weeks before transplanting the groups of spring onions. These were dropped off 2 hours later.

Built this pile 4 days ago. Its a slow cook recipe for garden fertility. Hay, horse poo, cardboard, lime, weeds, another old compost pile, coffee grounds, garden waste, lawn clippings, a couple of dead rabbits. Water and Oxygen. Using the thermometer is a great way to learn and ensure you have the recipe right. Its also essential to build a pile that is big enough to sustain itself at 60 degs for a few days.. it will be ready for a spin in a couple of weeks.. The pile will reduce in size and be about a quarter of the volume by the time it is all ready and decomposed. Hot composting is a essential skill of the small scale market garden.

Someone said its nearly summer! Planting spring onions and parsley transplants today. Soil is just about perfect after rain last night, and what looks like a hailstorm, found some ice in puddles this morning, but the sun is now out and we should make 18 deg c by lunchtime..

I seem to be spending a lot of time looking in this fridge at the moment. It's been reperposed as a germination chamber, a waterproof aquarium heater provides the heat and humidity. Inkbird to control the temp, at 23 deg C. There isn't a light in there, so its a twice daily task to check for seeds popping. Having control over germination allows me to standardise production more closely. I record dates on the fridge door with a whiteboard dry marker and can generally plot when to takes the trays out.. its pretty busy in there so I have to prioritise.

Winter projects are now getting finished. Removing this old heavy steel gate massively improves access to my wash and pack. Not to mention taking the dog out for a walk.. These small improvements to my daily work flow are part of my lean approach to small scale farming.. each one improving my efficiency. Huge shout out to Youngs in Mosgiel who supplied the custom sized gates $ 400 for the pair!
Final pic, rebuilding the tither, a quick bit of maintainence and asmall adjustment to the drive shaft, improving the drill attachment.

Happy Solstice.... good times ahead.

At precisely 2:57am this morning, Thursday 22 June, the Earth's axis reached its farthest point from the sun – meaning last night was the longest of the year, the winter solstice ❄️✨

Springtime temps today.. Great to see this bumblebee out sunning herself. I planted an autumn cover crop of daikon, broad beans, chickory and lupins to give an over winter diversity for the soil. Cutting that down today so I can prep the soil for spring.

A selection of our edible flowers. These too vary with the seasons. Rocket, nastursium, borage, marigold, oregano. Many of these are grown as companions, bringing in pollenators and adding some colour to the garden.

Hello, Just to introduce myself to those that haven't met me personally. I'm Neil Robinson, owner of Garden to Market. If you've already followed us you'll know this is an urban farm focused on the suppling the freshest, healthy and tasty vegetables possible.

To add a little more to this story Im currently growing on three urban backyards across Dunedin, a city located deep in the South Island of New Zealand. We have a maritime climate, with occasional summers. I supply mainly to local restaurants and the amazing landowners that help support me by sharing their land.

My business started after a long interest in feeding my own family with vegetables grown naturally and without the use of synthetic chemicals. This isn't possible without great attention to soil health, compost and organic inputs are still all I use to keep up soil fertility, adding some water and a little sunshine to grow super tasty veg. All of my farming practices are focused on maintaining what the plants are growing in, the living soil, I help to look after the soil by practising No Dig, and disturbing the soil as little as possible.

My philosophy is simple, returning what we take, acting as a guardian of this beautiful planet and being thankful for what it can give us.

Everything I do would not be possible without the chefs and restuarant owners that support local growers. 💚 Thankyou.👍

Nights are definately warming up. These slugs have been out and about, ending up on the top of the microclima netting that I use to protect early season plantings. Easy pickings with a little added salt this morning..
