CRD is a registered charity dedicated to helping the stray and abandoned kittens and cats living on the streets of Dunedin. Along with our dedicated team of volunteers we rescue, rehabilitate, desex and rehome hundreds of cats and kittens each year. We promote desexing of companion and stray cats, and aim to reduce the number of stray and unwanted cats in Dunedin. Our long-term aim is to have our

own shelter but in the meantime, all our rescues are fostered in private homes by volunteers until they are ready for their forever homes. Our main focus is kittens but we try to help with rehoming adult cats whenever space and resources allow.

UPDATE: His name is Fraser.

This wee 12 week old fellow was recently trapped. He's still rather unsure of these strange human things but it hopefully won't be long before he realises that having his very own human to wrap around his paw is a good thing :-)

UPDATE - Elmo's adoption fee has been sponsored.

Meet Elmo, a timid boy looking for his forever home. Elmo has had a rough start to life, but he hasn’t given up! Elmo knows that there is a loving, patient home out there for him.

Although it will take Elmo some time to learn to trust you, this challenge is so small compared to how much love and companionship he’ll give his forever family once he learns to trust.

Kitten season typically starts in summer with many vulnerable mumma cats and kittens coming into our care. At the start of August we received our first kitten. A lot of care goes into these wee kittens, including nutritious food, vet care and lots of love to make sure they have the best start to finding their forever homes.

We couldn’t rescue vulnerable kittens without your support. We are asking our supporters to consider making weekly, small donations towards Cat Rescue. We appreciate any donation and are grateful for your support.

DECEASED CAT
Found on Dukes Road North near the heritage bus parking depot - small tabby cat wearing a green plastic style collar. Unfortunately the cat had already passed away and has been taken to Vetlife Murray’s to be scanned for a microchip and hopefully find their family.

Sincerest condolences to the cats owners.

Our timid and barn cats have been waiting months to be adopted. Some need patient and loving homes to trust humans, while others prefer to be barn cats and chief mousers. While you may not be able to adopt one, we have another way for our supporters to help these shy cats.

To help them find forever homes, we are offering adoption fee sponsorship. By sponsoring the adoption fee of our barn and timid cats, you can not only help them find their forever homes but also encourage others to do the same. With a $0 adoption fee we can make it easier for more people to open their hearts and homes to these deserving cats.

🐱🌍 Happy International Cat Day! 🌍🐱

Today, we celebrate our furry friends who bring so much joy and love into our lives. Cat Rescue Dunedin is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming cats and kittens in need. We'd like to spotlight Joey and GiGi, who embody the heart of our mission.

Both Joey and GiGi (now named Roo) came to us emaciated with pulled tail syndrome. Poor Joey had also been attacked by a dog. With love, vet care and support, they are now living happy, healthy lives together in their forever home.

We couldn't rescue cats like Joey and Roo without our incredible fosters and the support of you, our amazing community! This International Cat Day, we urge you to consider donating so we can continue our work. With winter here, our costs are skyrocketing as we care for more sick cats and kittens.

Join us for our next Cat Rescue Dunedin Fundraiser! 🍪

We will be holding a fun, creative evening of making cat themed biscuits with the amazing Taryn from Little Biscuit Nz.

The fundraiser will be held on Friday, 23rd August from 7-9:30pm at University of Otago common room. Tickets are $35 per person and must be paid for prior to evening. We have limited spaces so please comment below to secure your tickets.

Ideally suited for ages 13+, with all materials supplied.

We're lowering the adoption fees for our tabby cats who have been waiting for months to be adopted. This discount also includes some of our timid and barn cats, many of whom have been with us for a long time. We hope that the discounted adoption fees will help these cats find their forever homes.

Our lovely foster Oshka has quite a story to tell.

Our lovely foster Oshka has quite a story to tell. Late one night on our way home, we saw 3 kittens on the side of the road. We went back and set some traps hoping to catch the kittens and with some luck a Mum too. To our surprise they just kept coming. We ended up with five 6 month old kittens and their Mum. More surprising she was still nursing them! All kittens were in good condition. This little Tabby had somehow managed to successfully raise 5 kittens on a rural industrial site on the side of a 100km road. All kittens have gone on to be adopted into wonderful homes. It soon became apparent Oshka wasn't just sporting a wormy belly but she was well into a second pregnancy. She soon had 5 gorgeous little babies. She patiently raised her litter to weaning and one by one they found their forever homes. We thought it was fitting to name her Matryoshka, after the Russian nesting dolls, meaning little Mother. 🪆 We were surprised to hear her vet estimated her to be approximately a year old! Oshka is now ready to find a home of her own. Oshka had clearly been someone's pet at some stage. Sadly, she will at times still shy away from a hand raised to her head. We can only imagine the hardship she has faced in her short life. Amazingly, she has really blossomed since her kittens left. She is very affectionate and has even started playing! Oshka is looking for a home that will treat her like the queen she is. With time to adjust we think she will adapt to a wide range of homes. One of our amazing fosters found themselves waking up every morning to an unusal sight. One of their foster kittens was always on the outside of their crate. They couldn’t work out how the kitten could escape when the door with still locked. Could it be a Houdini magic trick? They set up a camera and caught some cheeky antics!! We guess the cats out of the bag.. or the cage 🐱
