Meet Bounce 🐾
Bounce was on a recent hunting trip when he received a kick from a deer.

Bounce's owner brought him into where he was initially given pain relief but later he started feeling unwell, stopped eating and had a high fever, along with other presenting issues.

After two days in hospital, several ultrasounds that showed fluid in his belly, more bloodwork, fluid analysis and further consultations with vets from and , the decision was made to do explorative surgery on Bounce's abdomen.

In surgery, it was discovered that he had two holes in his small intestine and was leaking bile and intestinal bacteria into his abdomen.

With another three days of care and regular medication, Bounce headed home where his owner took care of his needs round the clock, and after a couple of weeks, he was back to his normal self, eating and bouncing around! 🐾

Vetlife Ashburton recently had Gus come into the clinic with something that wasn't in plain sight.

Gus is a lovely Labrador who presented with bad breath and strange licking/swallowing behaviour that had been occurring over the week.

In consult, veterinarian Hannah Evans found a stick across the roof of his mouth, stuck between his teeth. He was admitted, sedated and the stick was removed without issue. Gus has a decent wound to heal but should make a full recovery.

Well done for being so brave Gus! 🐾

🐾Saving Pumpkin 🐾
When the alarm was raised that a tiny, orange kitten had been spotted meowing for help not far from Vetlife Banks Peninsula in Little River, the team launched into action!

A vet and vet nurse rushed out with a cage while local shop keepers picked up up brooms!

Soon, the small group of would-be-rescuers located the kitten, cowering in the gutter, too weak to put up any fight! He was gently scooped up and safely brought into the clinic. There, the 8-week-old ginger kitten, named Pumpkin - who was likely dumped - received a health check and some much-needed TLC!

Luckily, other than being extremely underweight and starving, he was uninjured and healthy. Pumpkin was kept warm and fed until he could go into foster care with local cat rescue Kaitorete Kittens

A big thank you to the team at Vetlife Banks Peninsula for their compassion and care!

🚨 SURGERY IMAGES ALERT 🚨

Freya visited Vetlife Timaru for spey and gastropexy.

Gastropexy surgery helps prevent GDV, a dangerous condition where the stomach twists, especially in large, deep-chested dogs. Can you guess Freya's breed mix?

For gastropexy inquiries, reach out to your local Vetlife clinic.

How many treats are too many?

We have had an increase of dogs being brought into clinics with health issues that have been caused by feeding too many freeze dried treats.

Always check the packet for feeding recommendations to keep your pets thriving 🐾

🚨 WARNING CONTAINS IMAGES OF SURGERY 🚨

🦷 Look at those fangs!

😮 Young Millie came to see us in Timaru for her spay, and during her admit check, we discovered she had two pointy teeth too many! The two sharp teeth behind her growing adult canines are retained baby teeth that sometimes don’t get pushed out by their replacements.

If left in place they can increase the risk of dental problems later in life. We took the opportunity to quickly remove them while Millie was anesthetized for her main surgery, and from the size of those roots you can see why they didn't want to fall out by themselves!

🏥 The rest of her surgery went without a hitch, and we soon had her home for some TLC. 🐾

🚨SURGERY ALERT🚨
Jake came to our Temuka clinic because of swelling in his testicles, more severe than it had ever been. Veterinarian Lauren examined him and decided immediate surgery was necessary to address a suspected testicular torsion - a painful twist in the spermatic cord that can cut off blood supply to the testicles.

After confirming blood flow with an ultrasound, Jake underwent emergency castration by vets Lauren and Emily. The surgery involved draining bloody fluid and removing both testicles, placing a drain to manage fluid post-operation. After spending a night on heated floors for recovery, Jake returned home the next day, now in good spirits. A big thank you to Jake's family for letting us share his journey to recovery.

Cooler weather means predatory birds, like harrier hawks, depend more on roadkill for food, raising their chances of being hit by vehicles. These birds may find themselves unable to avoid oncoming traffic quickly enough.

Be vigilant and stay alert as seasons shift to colder temperatures.

A kind-hearted person recently brought this beautiful harrier hawk to our Culverden clinic after a vehicle strike. Fortunately, it was only stunned and, after a full recovery, was released back into the wild. 🦅

🐶🚨 Canine Parvovirus Alert 🚨🐾

There are rises in parvo across the country. This nasty disease can affect dogs of all ages although puppies are more susceptible. Stay vigilant as we've recently encountered a case in Alexandra, where a puppy was exposed within ten days after its last vaccination. Remember, it's best to wait at least ten days after the final vaccination as protection takes a while to kick in - longer for some breeds, such as dobermanns and rottweilers.

Learn more to protect your furry friends.

Our pets love exploring. And so do bugs, fleas and worms. Keep your pets' preventative treatments up-to-date so they can enjoy their best life!

🪱Increased socialisation increases the ease with which common parasites are spread as they thrive in warmer seasons.

😿Regular defleaing can stop the flea lifecycle from getting started before it becomes a problem.

🦠Initial vaccinations and regular boosters have been proven to safeguard pets against common diseases such as feline herpes, parvo and distemper.

We can help you work out a preventative treatment plan that suits you and your pets. Pop on in to your local clinic for a friendly chat. We'd love to know what adventures you've got planned!
