Got to contribute my (rather rusty 😁) tail plaiting skills to turning out Sach & Josh's lovely 3yo c**t Whiskey D'Acciaio (Cas) today. It was his first show. Weather was terrible. He coped pretty well. Few young boy moments! Sacha's friend Katherine (who did a fabulous job on his turnout) was going to do the showing part...but Cas proved a bit strong. Sach stepped in & took over, as she knows him better. All about education & positive experiences...especially at this age, and being an entire.
Great result. Cas won both his classes & the led young sporthorse championship.
Cas is out of Snowfire (Charlton Javelin x Buttons) by Cassius GNZ. Snowfire is a full sister to Antara Whiskey Mac who Sach used to SJ. Cas was bred by an long time friend of ours Fiona Graham.

Not a horse post today...it's the dairy goats that occupy my time at this time of year. We only have 30 does these days...but 2/3 of them have kidded in the past week. Keeping track of who belongs to who is a full time job!
For anyone wanting little goats 🐐...95% of the wee boys are for sale - they make great pets. My older wether mob are awesome for cross grazing the horse paddocks & keeping along the creek tidy. We also have a few of the doe kids for sale.
Most of the kids are by our new sable buck. A few are by the nubian bucks.

Great new product. Check it out
Introducing WoolGard • Utilising the potential of New Zealand strong wool to create animal health products that are naturally anti microbial, sustainable and 100% NZ grown and made.
We are excited to soon be releasing our first two products, a sheep’s wool alternative to your cotton wool gamgee.
This product is the ideal wrap for under your horses bandages whether it be for medical or everyday use. Wool is the favourable choice due to its inherent antimicrobial and moisture wicking qualities plus it’s also a superior and proven temperature regulator, meaning your horses legs are less likely to sweat.
Available in a 45cm and 30cm roll, simply cut your roll to size and use as you normally would under bandages.
We look forward to sharing more with you soon!

So here's some more information I found this morning. It's separate from the current debate raging around pedigree verification in age group classes with ESNZ.
The info below will be of interest to breeders of stationbred/Coastie type horses in particular.
It's proposing introduction of compulsory microchipping of all foals born in NZ starting from 2025 onwards. The details would be registered on the Companion Register (your vet will have added your cat or dog etc to this if they've been chipped)...unless you were registering with one of the various breed organisations.

Home after grazing on our former neighbours farm for the past 4yrs. Meersbrooke No Ears ( by Meersbrooke Ambassador out of the TB mare Demelling by Domingly).
No Ears is now 23yo & enjoying her retirement. Quite a few patches of grey hair these days 😁
It's been great to see her son M. Big Ears carrying on her winning ways in the Showhunter ring. And Sacha loves riding her daughter M. Baby Ears...even if they don't get time to compete much.
For those who don't know the story behind No Ears name...she lost most of her ears to frostbite as a weanling, when we lived in the Kawhatau Valley. It was a very heavy snow & it froze on her fluffy ears.
Most of her competive career we heard all sorts of comments & crazy theories about her ears...including how cruel we were & she should have been euthanized 🙄
Lucky we're all thick skinned 😁

Congratulations to Jasmine Priest & Meersbrooke Big Ears. Awesome results. Taking after his Mummy Meersbrooke No Ears. I'm sure his sire Electronic Al ( Zippy) would have been out there too..but sadly lost far too young.

11yo TB mare 16.1hh. By Swiss Ace & goes back to Stark South on the dam line. Good well performed family. Great natured & excellent to handle. Moves really well. Would make super mare for breeding sporthorses, or continuing on as a TB (this seasons stud return has been done & she is still active on the register). Unfortunately we recently lost her this season's foal. The mare was fantastic throughout. Standing to be milked & she's a super Mum. We still have her 3yo filly who's currently spelling.
Only available as we are winding down our broodmare band.

Sorting out the new office. Here's a blast back to the past!
The catalogue's from our 1st & 2nd sporthorse auctions. The first was in 1999 at Mangaweka sale yards. Quite a logistical thing carting in 15 youngsters for sale & 6 stallions to parade. The old Bedford was busy up & down the Kawhatau Valley Rd! Plus we had the bright idea to free-jump everything prior to the auction! Including the stallions. And run a food stall! Thank goodness for our hardworking kids & friends.
The 2nd auction was in 2001. This time we held it on farm & auctioned the lots in our newly built round pen. The free jumping demo was down the deer fenced lane that led into the pen. We also opened the auction up to outside entries & had a gear section. Plus food & drinks. 45 lots went through this sale, plus 4 stallions paraded.
Looking back they were big undertakings. No social media like today & all the catalogues hand produced & laboriously photocopied!
And how times have changed. We had a stunning grey Kaimanawa c**t from the first muster - full sized pony. We called him Desert Ash & paraded him at the first auction. But there was zero interest in anyone wanting to breed to him, so he was gelded & went to a PC home.
The list of horses & ponies we've bred since 1987 (the founding of the stud) is long & some very well performed amongst them. Glad we did it...but glad we stopped too. Nice we still have a couple of mares here with all our old bloodlines though. Plus old Iced Ripples...he was a 2yo at the first auction & covered his first mares that spring.

Squiggle's looking pretty flash...and he knows it 😁🤩
New arrival this morning. Lovely c**t by our TB stallion Sir Ego out of Fancy. Fancy's by Meersbrooke Iced Ripples out of BMW Liberty. The dam line goes back to some good old NZ sporthorse bloodlines...Super Stud, Pintado Desperado & Nitro.

Not looking bad for nearly 28yo...he kept it going for quite a while.
Meersbrooke Farm was established in 1982 - originally in the Waikato, before shifting to Taihape in 1993 & then Palmerston North in 2013. We’ve been breeding sport horses & re-educating off the track Thoroughbreds all that time. Our original homebred sporthorses were by reg. Clydesdale stallion Guildford Duke out of TB mares.
Duke’s legacy has continued through his son Meersbrooke Ambassador (Clyde/TB x) & then grandsons - Meersbrooke Iced Ripples (M. Ambassador x Bay Ripples) & Iced Ripples full brothers, Larkspur Ripples & Meersbrooke Sparkling Ripples, who both became foundation stallions - for Larkspur & Camberley Studs.
We’ve bred performance ponies since 1995 - originally by Meersbrooke Sparhawk - dec. (stationbred) & now, by Whakarpiro Sand n Surf (cremello pinto stationbred).
We also breed Thoroughbreds, primarly to race - we train ourselves. We’ve had four TB stallions - our current one being Sir Ego. We also take on racehorses from other trainers at times - either to continue racing, &/or re-educate as sport horses.
Our horse & ponies are very known, & have competed successfully to top level across many disciplines. They’ve also made lots of recreational riders & pony club riders very happy. We no longer breed the sporthorses & performance ponies commercially, but we have the odd one that still becomes available for sale. Most of our horses & ponies for sale these days, are full Thoroughbred.
To assist our training operation we’re constantly expanding our facilities. Hence the cross country course, show jumps & the Cowboy Challenge paddock. The later was built for the horses we had in this years Dunstan Ex Factor Competition at Equidays. It’s for TB’s who’ve retired, & had less than 12mths of sporthorse training prior to the competition. 2018, was the 3rd year we’ve had horses competing there. Meersbrooke Miss Mindi won the Cowboy Challenge class there this year.
