The New Zealand Angus Association Inc

The New Zealand Angus Association is an Incorporated Society which aims to promote the use of the Angus breed within New Zealand and maintain the ongoing integrity of the breed. The Association is governed by a council of seven (7) members with the assistance of the General Manager. Each board director represents a geographical area (Ward) and is elected on a

n annual basis with the President holding office for a two year period. The council meet on a regular basis to discuss the Association's direction and set policy. The Association maintain and update the New Zealand Pedigree Register using the BREEDPLAN performance recording system. It provides breeders with valuable performance reports enabling them to further enhance their stud farming objectives. It also undertakes national promotion, provides assistance with individual advertising & promotion (see promotions section) and offers a wide range of farm-based services. The Association provides input into industry-wide issues and co-ordinates breed marketing opportunities. Along with an Annual magazine and bi-monthly newsletters, an annual herd book and Genetic Evaluation report of registered bulls and cows are published and distributed to all breed members as part of the 'membership package'. The herd book entries are the recorded progeny of approximately 25,000 stud Angus cows farmed nationwide. As an Angus breeder you can expect:

> Cattle well suited to New Zealand's farming systems.
> Cattle with great adaptability to the varying conditions of altitude, topography, climate, nutrition and management.
> Cattle with the resilience to cope with feed shortages and to recover quickly from drought and harsh winter conditions.
> Easy calving, high growth rate sires capable of producing progeny meeting market requirements - In a large organised cross breeding trial in New Zealand, females mated to Angus sires showed fewer problems at calving than those mated to a selection of seven other breed sires.
> Calves which grow rapidly and efficiently on pasture or in a feedlot, reaching heavy weights when about eighteen months of age.
> Dams which are known for their fertility, hardiness and proven ability to get in calf quickly and consistently.
> Dams which calve without assistance and produce fast finishing progeny.
> Dams who are good foragers, with a long life span and constant production.
> Angus beef that consistently achieves more desirable results in carcass quality determinants such as marbling, fat depth, meat colour and pH assuring a tastier and more tender product. (For further details on Angus beef please refer to the section on AngusPureª.)

Spotted this couple of Dandaleith Angus 2 year old heifers with their calves posing today, these girls are what we are expect from our heifers and cows, they have come through calving and mating well and the calves are what we expect. We use our home bred yearling bulls over our yearling heifers, then the heifers have to rear a quality calf and get back in calf early to remain in the herd. The Zoetis World Angus Youth Competition 2025 would like to introduce James Armitage, who is competing for NEW ZEALAND 🇳🇿

James has grown up on farms around Southland, New Zealand. He found himself a shepherding opportunity on North Range and is very involved in dog trailing which has helped him gain skills in stockmanship and reading livestock. James has been successful in the sport of rodeo, having received a few placings and this has been a great achievement.

A Year of Angus Highlights 2024: It’s inspiring to see the momentum and dedication within AngusNZ and the Generation Angus teams! The preparation for the 2025 World Forum in Australia is an exciting opportunity for the talented young members, and special thanks go to Marie Fitzpatrick, Kath McCullum, and Max Tweedie for their leadership and contributions to this program. It’s clear the team is driven to bring their best and take on the challenge of the title once again.

The October meeting with ward chairs was a productive and collaborative session. Bringing voices from across the wards into one room is a powerful way to share feedback, generate new ideas, and tackle challenges together. It’s fantastic to see the camaraderie and focus on collective growth—credit to all the members contributing at the ward level for helping drive these successes.

AngusNZ’s global engagement with other Angus organisations and efforts to make data more agile for future evaluations show a strong commitment to focusing on the future. Building closer relationships with BLG and exploring collaborations to support commercial beef farmers are great steps in ensuring Angus continues to lead the way in the beef industry.

There’s a lot of exciting work happening, and it’s wonderful to see AngusNZ driving innovation, collaboration, and progress across the board. Wishing you every success with your breeding programmes and advancing Angus Genetics across the country.

Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas season,

Mike Smith

Marshall Stokes has been showing cattle since he was knee high to an Angus cow – and that’s no exaggeration! Heading into the ring with an Angus calf bigger than himself is one of Marshall’s earliest showing or farming memories.

Marshall has grown up on a 780ha sheep, beef, deer and dairy support property on the Banks of the Waimakariri River, near Oxford in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Alongside this is the family stud, Ranch Angus, established by Marshall’s Dad, Andrew in 2003. The Stokes family are a familiar sight not only at shows but supporting events across the board in the local and wider community, with Andrew also at the helm of the Christchurch A&P cattle section.
