A massive congratulations to James and Debbie and Dave and Jan Stewart from Stewart Dairylands! A huge achievement, well done! 💙🧡

Congratulations to Hiwinui dairy farmers James & Debbie and Dave & Jan Stewart of Stewart Dairylands who have taken out the Regional Supreme Award at the Horizons Ballance Farm Environment Awards in Palmerston North tonight.

Stewart Dairylands was established in 1999, however five generations of Stewarts have farmed and expanded the legacy business that was started in 1886. Guided by a strong sense of family history, the Stewarts see the land as a precious commodity and therefore focus on creating sustainable systems to leave the land in better shape for the next generation.

Exploring opportunities for diversification is part of the business strategy for the entrepreneurial family, with value streams from dairy beef, as well as supplying milk for both boutique cheese and ice cream. In partnership, they also offer farm tours.

In awarding the Regional Supreme Award, the judges made the observation that on many properties landowners are meeting high standards; but on this property the Stewarts strive to exceed and lead industry standards.

Welcome to our Facial Eczema Spore Count Bulletin for 2024 - this pinned post will be updated each week, so please revisit to see what the spore count is in your area.

For the week ended 26 April 2024, the highest spore count in the Feilding area was 0 and the highest spore count in the Awapuni area was 30,000.

The Facial Eczema Risk rating is LOW for Feilding areas and LOW for Awapuni areas.

For advice on facial eczema prevention see here: https://totallyvets.co.nz/facial-eczema-all-you-need-to-know/

Spore counts can vary greatly between properties and even between paddocks. We encourage farmers to bring in grass samples to get a more accurate idea of the facial eczema risk on their own property. Contact us if you would like more information on bringing in your own samples for testing.

Have you started to think about Facial Eczema yet? 🤠🐑🐄🦌🦙

We are now stocking 20 kg Summit Zinc Salt Blocks. They are designed for use 1 to 2 months in advance of the typical facial eczema (FE) spore danger period (from now) until the danger period is over, providing additional, low-cost zinc in the diet prior to administering zinc treatments (i.e. The Time Capsule, Face Guard). Each block also contains selenium, cobalt, iodine, and salt.

Our FE Spore Count Bulletin will be on the Totally Vets website from 12 January. This reports on spore counts from various regions around the Manawatu, Tararua, and our wider clinic coverage areas. Remember once spore counts from an area close to you, or your own pasture spore counts trend towards 20,000 it is time to start zinc FE preventative treatments, or at least make a plan to prevent FE – part of this could be a conversation with your veterinarian.

If you don’t already receive our FE Bulletin you can subscribe to weekly reports by emailing [email protected] or talk to us in the clinic.

Given the high prices that have been realized for lambs over the last few seasons and the high scanning rates currently being achieved it is worth paying particular attention to pre-lamb treatments for ewes.

Getting some of these simple practices correct can make a huge difference on lamb survival and ewe condition and ultimately the financial performance of the ewe flock.

Over the last three years we’ve been encouraging the use of anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) for common conditions faced by all farmers such as assisted calvings, downer cows, as part of mastitis treatments and when treating sick cows and calves.
