Keep up the great work everyone 💙🧡
FIRST HEALTH CHECKS FOR PUPPIES - Why are they so important? 👩🏻⚕️
When you bring your new puppy home, one of the first things you should do is book them in for their first vet check. The vet will perform a thorough physical exam from nose to tail and address any concerns you may have about your new addition.
If this is your first puppy, this is also a great opportunity to pick your vet's brain about nutrition, training, flea and worm treatment, microchipping and registration!
Your puppy will also receive their first lot of vaccinations at this health check, and your vet will advise you of a suitable vaccination schedule.
Bringing your puppy in for a health check at an early age also gets them used to coming into the clinic and being handled by different people, which is great for their socialisation!
As you can see here, Dr. Holly was working at the speed of light to vaccinate and check out this Golden Retriever puppy and his seven other siblings! 🐶🧡
BEHIND THE SCENES - FARM DOG VACCINATION RUN, ĀPITI 🐕
When you live 45 minutes from the vet clinic, work full time on the farm and have a handful of energetic working dogs to juggle, getting their annual vaccinations and health checks completed on time can be a bit of a mission!
That's why throughout the year we send a vet and a nurse (in this case, mixed vet Georgie and nurse Debbie!) out on-farm to make sure these local dogs are all up to date with their vaccinations and working fit 💪
Here are some of the things Georgie checks out during a health check:
🐾 Teeth, for signs of dental disease
🐾 Eyes, for any lesions or damage
🐾 Skin and coat, for any lumps and bumps
🐾 Limbs, for signs of joint disease
🐾 Heart and lungs, for any irregularities
If you're interested in joining our farm dog vaccination run, give the clinic a call on 06 323 6161 and ask for Rachel or Debbie!
Spring has come early for some of the team at the clinic! The staff are enjoying helping bottle feed these three lambs, who are all future school pet day stars 🥇
Is your pet a little hesitant to take the flying leaps that they used to? They could be suffering from mild arthritis!
We often assume arthritis will present as an obvious limp - but it can be as subtle as sleeping more than usual, stepping into the car instead of jumping, or not making it to the toilet in time.
Your vet will be able to confirm whether these changes are related to arthritis. For milder cases, the use of a nutraceutical or ‘joint supplement’ may be needed.
So, what’s in a joint supplement? Most are based on a combination of green-lipped mussel extract, fatty acids, chondroitin and glucosamine - they work by providing building blocks for healthy joint fluid and cartilage, as well as providing an anti-inflammatory effect.
There can be a bewildering array of these products on the market, so pop into the clinic and have a chat to our team to see what works best for your pet (and your wallet!)
