Some people think that breeding sheep that are resistant to worms means lower production. That simply isn't true. To become a WormFEC Gold breeder, the flock must average above the national average for production (NZMW) as well as above average worm resistance. Many Resistant rams are also right at the top for production.

Since 2019, many of our sheep breeders have been committed to measuring methane emissions in their flocks. Around 15,000 sheep were measured on farm for methane emissions.

The intention is now to expand this initial work to enable a growing number of rams with a low methane breeding value to be available to commercial farmers.

We welcome an investment by the Government in a ground-breaking low methane sheep genetics project to give more farmers access to animals to help reduce the production of methane from their farm.

The $4.2m low methane sheep programme, supported by a range of organisations including B+LNZ and the Ministry for Primary Industries through the Climate Emergency Response Fund, will use genetic selection to accelerate the uptake of low methane sheep among commercial farmers and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the NZ flock.

Globally, NZ has led the way in pioneering genetics to reduce methane resulting in massive efficiency gains of the NZ sheep flock over the last 30 years. This project will help genetics support the industry for the next 30 years.
