It was International Cat Day yesterday so our cat owning staff members have been celebrating their favourite felines. 😻🫶

Here at Petfirst Veterinary we love our kitty-cat patients so much that we are a ISFM (International Society of Feline Medicine) Silver Accredited Feline Friendly Practice.

This means that your cat will be cared for in a cat friendly and low stress environment.

Not only do we have a cat friendly waiting area and consult room, away from any dogs, but we also have our separate cat hospital area set up to make your cat (and you) as comfortable as possible.
Our vets and nurses are trained in cat friendly and low stress handling and keep their knowledge up to date with cat specific continuing education.

Here's to all our feline patients! ❤️🐱🐾

It is Veterinary Receptionist Week so we're celebrating our amazing receptionists George and Tory.

These incredible ladies are always going the extra mile to help our clients and ensuring our patients are kept comfortable in the waiting room.... and while doing that, they also have the mammoth task of keeping the vets and nurses happy by keeping the days ticking along smoothly! Their smiling faces and endless kindness and patience is second to none.

George and Tory, thank you for all that you do we certainly would be lost without you! 🥰🥰

Yesterday was World Wildlife Day a day where we can celebrate all the amazing native birds and other wildlife unique to good old New Zealand.
So, what do you do if you come across sick or injured wildlife?
We spoke to our local Gisborne Branch of Department of Conservation to find out exactly what our clients should do:
• Take photos of the wildlife so they can be identified by DOC staff. This is especially helpful when identifying bird species and to determine if they are native or not. DOC want to know about seals, whales and dolphins too.
• Take photos of any evidence of harm around the animal, this can help DOC build a picture on what may have happened.
• DOC can be contacted on 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468). This is not a local Gisborne number so be sure to mention Gisborne as the area and the exact location of the animal.
• DOC can then establish the priority of the call and if required contact a vet for treatment.

Have You Met Our New Vet?

Caroline is an experienced veterinarian and comes to us from Hastings. She is enjoying dealing with the relaxed attitude of Gizzy's friendly folk and describes the region as "an undiscovered paradise" ....we're so glad she agrees with us!

You can find her at the clinic from Tuesday to Friday and on her days off we know she'll be hanging with her fur babies, Bailey the dog and Nigel the cat.

We are so thrilled to have Caroline join our team! 🤩

PARVO ALERT! Our parvo cases are rapidly increasing. Please keep your dogs safe.

We have created this list of frequently asked questions (F.A.Q.). If after reading this you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us!

1. What is parvo?
Parvo is a very nasty virus that attacks a dog's intestines. It mostly affects puppies and young dogs.

2. What are the signs of Parvo?
As Parvo attacks the intestines it causes dogs to stop eating, start vomiting and they often get bloody diarrhoea.

3. How does a dog get Parvo?
Dogs get Parvo from contact with contaminated poo particles. Dogs can sniff up these particles directly from an infected dog or pick them up from sniffing the ground where a sick dog has been. These particles can survive for many months and they can be brought into your house under your shoes.

4. Is there a way to prevent my dog from getting Parvo?
YES! Fortunately we have a very effective vaccine available, as long as your dog receives its full course of vaccinations it will protect your dog and prevent it from getting Parvo.

5. What is the best way to treat my sick dog?
Most dogs are so unwell they need to be admitted at the vet clinic. They are put on a drip and treated with drugs to stop the vomiting and treat infections. This treatment is intensive and costly but offers the best chance of survival for your dog.

6. Can I treat a dog with Parvo at home?
If your dog is still drinking you can try and treat Parvo at home. Your veterinarian can provide you with medication to help, but your dog will depend on you to pull it through. Water and electrolytes are critical as sick dogs lose so much of these with the vomiting and diarrhoea. Often dogs will be too sick to try treatment at home.

7. How do I stop Parvo from spreading?
Firstly: keep your sick dog away from other dogs and keep unvaccinated dogs away from areas where the sick dog has been. If possible, disinfect all areas the sick dog has been. This can be done with household bleach, using one cup of bleach per 30 cups of water. And remember that Parvo can linger for up to a year, so don't immediately get a new unvaccinated puppy, as it is likely to get sick as well.

Season's Greetings to all our lovely patients, furred, feathered, scaled or otherwise and a huge thank you to their amazing human whanau who have allowed us to care for their precious pets.

Today we bid farewell to our wonderful UK locums Dom and Anna who have helped hold the fort while our Maarten and Esther have been away. We wish Anna and Dom all the best for their travels around NZ and hope they soon realise that Gisborne is the best place to be!

Our clinic will be closed from Saturday 23rd December 2023 to Sunday 7th January 2024. We reopen for business Monday 8th January.

Safe and happy holidays everyone! 🎅🎄⭐️⛄️❤️
