Yesterday was World Wildlife Day a day where we can celebrate all the amazing native birds and other wildlife unique to good old New Zealand.
So, what do you do if you come across sick or injured wildlife?
We spoke to our local Gisborne Branch of Department of Conservation to find out exactly what our clients should do:
โข Take photos of the wildlife so they can be identified by DOC staff. This is especially helpful when identifying bird species and to determine if they are native or not. DOC want to know about seals, whales and dolphins too.
โข Take photos of any evidence of harm around the animal, this can help DOC build a picture on what may have happened.
โข DOC can be contacted on 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468). This is not a local Gisborne number so be sure to mention Gisborne as the area and the exact location of the animal.
โข DOC can then establish the priority of the call and if required contact a vet for treatment.
