Unfortunately the Dunga Derby will be postponed to a later date…
The organisers have had a clash of dates…
The board loaner is going to the South Island…
And covid levels are pain…
Will keep everyone updated when we have a new date.

Under orange we will be capping Dunga Derby entries at 50 people.
This means we can retain an inclusive vibe for vaxed and unvaxed alike.
50 is about the number of folk we usually see at the event anyway.
But get their early on the morning to secure your spot.
$20 entry fee.

Sunday flash back to some of our prize giving…
We try to keep our footprint on this planet pretty minimal so our trophies and spot prizes are all second hand or recycled.
We still love recognising some great people and stylish or hilarious surfing from throughout the day.
A few beers never hurt either.

The Dune Dogs Dunga Derby came about as a celebration of traditional surfing…
We had a low key crew that shunned the competitive surfing scene…
We valued style over statement…
Trim over turns…
And were hankering for an event that was really just a chill day at the beach swapping boards with your mates, sharing picnics and sipping on a few brews.
We were all riding modern logs and dragging Dungas out from under the house to get a feel for where traditional logging had come from.
That’s where the Dune Dogz Dunga Derby was born from…
We asked if we could borrow a bunch of his boards, take them to the beach and spend the day getting to know the different shapes that brought us modern logging.
& FAR EAST Coffee Co came on board to sponsor the drinks.
supplied the BBQ.
The crew brought sofas and marquis to the beach for comfort.
And in the months prior spent time at the op shops in search of vintage Hawaiian shirts which would be given away as spot prizes.
That’s how the event evolved. It is in every way a beach hang rather than a competition.
You don’t have to be able to surf well, nobody can riding a Dunga for the first time.
We keep the entry fee minimal to cover wax and the occasional ding repair where needed. It’s not a money maker for anyone.
It’s just a fun day at the beach and we look forward to seeing you there.

Stolen Surfboard: 9’6 feet surfboard shaped by Daryn Mcbride. Distinctive brown paisley fabric inlay and pinstripes.
Glassed on fin and no leg rope plug.

Was on top of a silver Mitsubishi Triton Rego HEN468 when it was stolen from 754 Childers road, Elgin, Gisborne on 4th October.

Love this board and Daryn isn’t shaping any more so would be awesome to get it back. The truck would be handy too.

Some of the first vintage log events in Gisborne were run by the famous underground surf cult the Moananui…
Similar to Dune Dogs the Moananui celebrate style, eccentricity, smooth surfing and humorous antics.
We thank those that pave the way for us as surfers to have open minds to unusual surf crafts and ways of riding a wave.

In keeping with the origins of Dune Dogz it will be a low key affair…
Riding some vintage logs…
Drinking some beers…
& sharing some kai.
After all Dune Dogz are a group of surf nerds.
A crew of drop outs when it comes to trophies and results.
A crew of comedic antics.
Of trimming sections.
Of minimalism.
Of celebrating the limitations of the old and embracing a simpler way of surfing and a simpler way of life.
