It’s a busy time of year for us on the farm but here’s a very quick update for you all!
We had the wonderful Robyn out yesterday to do some sheath cleans and some lovely contact care work. The horses love her!
Baby Bree is growing like a w**d, and looking more and more clydie every day!
Yearling Storm and her 2yr old partner in crime Pink, are living their best lives. Grass up to their knees and looking like butterballs, only caring about fun and food!
Beau is back with his wife Ember and very happy about it. He is lovely with his foal and very respectful and careful around both the girls 🥰
Fat boy Guy is living the life. Mostly concentrating on maintaining his dad bod, with the occasional dose of farm duties when needed 😉
The paddocks still feel rather empty since waving off a few very key members of the equine family, but we have wonderful updates of them being adored in their new homes 🥰

It was my birthday… Husband wanted to take me out for lunch, but I just wanted him to help hold young horses while I did some hoof trimming 😅
He got bonus points for his spontaneous photography 😉

To say I am thrilled would be an understatement!

This morning Ember had a stunning filly foal by our wonderful stallion Somerton Beau. Healthy, strong and thriving. And the best first time mum there ever was 🧡

I have had a few enquiries about whether Beau is standing to outside mares this season. The short answer is no 😂 but it is something I’ll consider for the future. He is a rising 5yr old and I’m so pleased with how he is maturing. He currently has a new girlfriend, one of two mares for this season. I’ve separated Ember as, for her first foaling, I’d like her to have her space. Here’s a couple of photos of him being a gentleman, even sharing his breakfast 😉

What a journey! 10 years, 6 foals and a whole lot of love. I owe so much to this mare. My paddocks feel empty without her. But what an amazing twist of fate for her to end up with her biggest fan, who has followed her journey for many years. We miss you Nui 💛

You can’t beat temperament.

It’s hard to believe that Ember was a scared and defensive little foal who turned up here 4years ago, hiding behind her mother. Unable to be touched without being cornered or feeling the need to pin her ears.

I’m so proud of the horse she is today. She is the kindest, gentlest, most trusting girl. Easy to be around in every way.

Today when I fed her I noticed a decent gash just above her muzzle. She stood like a statue while I sloshed cold salt water all over it, wiped and picked at it, then sprayed it with anti-septic ‘stingy’ spray. She didn’t even think about moving away from me. Instead, when I was done she breathed deep and put her head in my arms, melting into me. We stood like that for a while, just being. And then she stayed at the gate while she watched me walk home.

🧡

We were devastated to hear of the loss of this very special stallion this morning (the sire of our own Somerton Beau), and our hearts go out to Grant and the whole Somerton Park team. What a massive loss 💔

6 trims, 1 re-shoe. Farrier day. And an update for you all! ….

There are a few changes in the air at Carnagh. I have had some pretty major speed bumps in the health department this year, and it means I have to put my sensible hat on and try and lighten the load.
Lilly will be heading off on her new adventure down to a wonderful family (that includes her little sister!) down in Taranaki next week.
And it looks like Nui, our Queen and matriarch, will be heading north to spend her days being adored by her biggest fan and long term friend of our page up in Auckland. 🥲 The hardest decision but the right one.

Ember is almost ready to pop (always nerve wracking with a maiden mare 😬). All going well, this foal will be a wonderful all round hunter type. Mum and dad have the most amazing temperaments and are exactly what I want to be matching when it comes to breeding. Foal will be coloured as Ember is homozygous for the pinto colour gene, and will be available at weaning so get in touch if you’re interested in a big colourful hunter type!

I have not yet been able to part with our blue eyed Storm baby. She is the last foal by my dear Nui and the first by our boy Beau and is a very special girl. So for now, I am stashing her away 😉 I can’t get rid of them all right?!

Spring has sprung early this year which has been a blessing after a few turbulent years of extreme weather on the east coast. The grass is growing and things are green, blossoming and DRY! 🌿🌸☀️
