Fiona attended the Working Dog Symposium in Queenstown last week. A great opportunity for collegial discussion and keeping up to date with the latest available surgeries.

Our team have extensive experience with working dog medicine and surgery, and will work with clients to achieve the best outcome and a return to work for their dogs. We carry out referral surgeries for other clinics in Gisborne and Wairoa, meaning clients can avoid having to travel out of town. Thank you to everyone who took the time to catch up with us at the five EVS Shed Meetings held this week. Special thanks to Colin McKay from Elanco Animal Health for updating us on effective fly control, including product selection and methods of application, in order to achieve realistic protection periods.

John Meban and Hoffman Haasbroek then gave an overview of the current challenges around drench resistance and the recommendations for the selective use of novel drenches. This interactive discussion allowed for a better understanding of the key criteria for creating a targeted plan for managing parasites.

We are seeing greater challenges in fly strike prevention and managing internal parasites in sheep. Pet Dental month at Eastland Vets

Dental care is very important for your cat and dog. Because they don't brush their teeth every day, dogs and cats can quickly build up tartar, leading to gum disease, broken teeth, smelly breath and tooth root abscesses. Having a regular dental scale and polish can reduce the need for extractions.

We have recently seen an increase in cases of rat bait toxicity here at Eastland Vets. Rat bait affects the body's ability to clot blood, and clinical signs may not be seen until 2-3 days after ingestion. If you see your pet eat rat bait (or you suspect they may have done so) call the vet immediately - they may be able to induce vomiting to reduce the amount absorbed.

When there are signs of poisoning a blood test can confirm or rule out rat bait. Poisoned animals will require treatment with Vitamin K, and severe cases may require a blood transfusion. Rat bait poisoning can be fatal - please ensure your rat bait is secure and out of reach of pets.

Introducing our EVS Gisborne production animal retail team !

Garry Jones has extensive experience in both the agricultural and animal health industries, and is focused on providing a high level of professional animal healthcare advice. Garry is passionate about family, V8's and rugby, and is looking forward to forming trusted relationships with our EVS clients.

Abby McIntyre has grown up on a sheep and beef farm and then has worked in a farming retail sales role. She is currently completing a Business Diploma and next month will commence an On-Farm Parasitology course through the NZVA. As well as retail sales, Abby will be managing production animal vet bookings and lab work.

Garry and Abby both have a good understanding of farming customers needs and will be a huge asset to the EVS team.
