Could your pet have kidney disease?
Chronic kidney failure is common in older dogs and cats. Some symptoms are very subtle, while others are more obvious.
Symptoms may include:
Increased thirst and/or urination
Nausea and vomiting
Weight loss
Decreased appetite
Tiredness and lethargy
Blood in urine
Overall weakness
Pale gums
Signs of dental disease like smelly breath, pale gums, and mouth ulcers
Untidy fur and/or itchy skin
If your pet shows any of these symptoms, a visit to the vet is the best plan, so that diagnosis and appropriate treatment can be started.

Reunited! 🥰 Izzy (13 years) went missing a year ago from the North Chatton area - the owners assumed she had sadly passed away. Recently she appeared at a property in Mandeville, where the homeowners brought her into the Gore clinic to be scanned for a microchip. Fortunately she was chipped and registered on NZCAR so we were able to track down the owners, who were very surprised, but thankful to have her home.
This happy situation highlights the importance of microchipping your cat, as well as ensuring the are registered on the national database (as shown, they can travel a fair distance!).😸🐈

At Home Dental Care
We all want our pets healthy and happy with great big smiles. The good news is there are things we can do at home to look after our furry friends smiles:
Regularly cleaning your pet's teeth with a pet-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste will help to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. To get them used to it, start by smearing a dot of toothpaste on your finger and using it to clean their teeth. Once they are used to this you start using a toothbrush.
Dental chews and toys can help keep teeth clean. Some dental treats have additives to help reduce the buildup of plaque and tartar.
Water additives that have been formulated to freshen up your pets’ teeth and help prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, can be put into your pets’ drinking water.
There are special dental diets that have been formulated to help reduce tartar buildup. These often have larger kibble that helps to mechanically clean the teeth as your pet chews.
