We had an enjoyable day at the July ribbon parades hosted by Southland Kennel Assn

Firstly Maddy (Ch Talbothights I’ll Rememba U) was awarded her ribbon acknowledging winning Champion of Champions for the 2023 year. She is now retired from showing and will soon be going to her new pet home. She gave us enjoyment in the ring with good results including Best of Bred at the 2023 National show along with 2 lovely litters of puppies

Secondly Khan (Talbothights Time To Reign) was awarded his ribbon for Best Baby Puppy on Parade 2023
Now in Junior he today took out
Best on Parade and Best Junior on Parade under Judges Mike Bradley and Barbara Roger’s

Newbies to the show ring Roxy (Talbothights Twist and Shout) took a Puppy on Parade only by margins from her brother Otis (Talbothights
Mr Twister. Both puppies are very green and did not show well but both judges saw potential. More training needed

KONA (CH Drakon the Master of the Game) enjoyed his run around the ring to take Best Veteran and
Kimberley (Ch Talbothights Times Up) won Champion on Parade

Young grandson Jesse took Khan in Child Handler. Got to encourage our young ones

TALBOTHIGHTS KENNELS have no puppies currently but plan to bred later this year

Puppies will have been raised in my home with 24 hour care. They will have been produced from healthy DNA tested blood lines through EMBARK USA I am a DogsNZ current member No. 098842 and all parents will meet DogsNz Code of Conduct requirements.

Puppies will have had their vet check and first and vaccinations along with their microchip prior to rehoming at 8 plus weeks of age

Please research the breed prior to making inquiries to ensure they will fit your household. Very family friendly dogs who make very loyal companions but do have a watchdog tendency Are a shedding breed but actually require very little maintenance, just a quick comb out every week or so A teflon type coat keeps dirt off without constant washing and without the doggy smell
Puppies need to be in homes to develope their social skills. They will give back love and affection to any new family

Inquiries welcome by phoning 027 4623808 or email
mailto:[email protected]

Another year of showing done and dusted with Kona (Ch Drakon The Master Of the Game) once again doing us proud with many good wins

He has taken out
SHOW DOG OF THE YEAR (New Zealand Wide) On the
Dogzonline Points Ccompetition for the 6th time

With retirement looming this will probably be the last time he achieves this award. He has taken us on such a journey over the nine years he has been in the ring. We have loved every minute of it. There have been other major achievements from other dogs in our show pack but he always over shadowed them all

Now with new blood on the horizon the next year is very exciting

Eyes open now so this will be the last time they will cooperate. They will be on the move

Santa has come early to Talbothights Kennel with the first of two bitches whelping us a lovely litter of 5 puppies Congratulations to Nina and Ollie
Ch Talbothights Remember Who U R and Talbothights Oliver Twist

I’m quietly hoping the next litter is slightly late as I would prefer not to whelp on Christmas Day but unfortunately we have no control over our dog’s reproductive cycles

We will spend our summer holidays at home this year and enjoy watching these beautiful babies develope and grow before choosing our next young ones for our show team.

I will include you all on their journey

Inquiries welcome

My dog is not my child. My dog is not my furbaby.

I am not his mother, I am his trainer. The word trainer is not a bad word, it means leader, supporter,disciplinary.. and friend.

My dog is my friend. He is my partner and my companion. To treat him like a child, to infantilize him and make it seem as though he needs my constant coddling or protection, would be unfair to him.

He is an adult carnivore that I have brought into my human world. Because of that it is my responsibility as his owner:

1) To communicate with him in a way he can understand.

2) To provide leadership, discipline and mutual respect.

3) To understand his instincts and needs, and provide appropriate outlets for them.

4) To train him and provide him the skills to function effectively in our human world, including acceptable manners and behaviours including the veterinarian.

Our dogs deserve to be given responsibility and allowed to be adult creatures, not perpetual babies.

Please, don't try to make them tiny humans, they aren't and they don't want to be. Dogs are wonderful because they are dogs. Let them be dogs.

Teach them to be good ones.

We were lucky to be able to combine a weekends dog showing with the Christchurch Xmas Japanese Spitz gathering
A huge attendance of at least 36 spitz ran free at the lovely private residence of Christina Buchanan at Yarldhurst. Lovely to catch up on some of our puppies and rehome dogs and others we did not know

Dear Dog Owners,

This week I have seen post after post after post on the veterinary social media pages about the struggle with larger breed dogs that are undisciplined and fearful and trying to bite at staff and veterinarians. Half of the posts stated that they, the vet, were going to stop seeing any large breed dogs, some of them said that they were going to fire all clients who had dogs that were not well controlled, others said that they were starting to refuse service to dogs that growled or tried to bite or got freaked out when they tried to examine them. Clients, this is a huge problem and it is your problem and let's be real, it is your fault.

Dogs are NOT children or humans and we need to stop treating them like they are. They are animals! They do not learn by being coddled and babied and allowed to get away with whatever they feel like doing. It does not work that way in the animal kingdom. If you are a little sh*t of a dog your mom or some older dog is going to bite your head off to teach you! Once that puppy leaves its mom, you now become the teacher and trainer of what is and what is not acceptable behavior and if you don't, you and you alone are ruining your dog!

Dogs need discipline! They are like your kids! They need you to teach them, to train them, to discipline them so they learn what is and what is not acceptable. I can not tell you the number of times I have been in an exam room and a dog is growling at me and the owner does nothing. In fact, often times they pull back from the dog and they always get that sheepish look and often will say, “he doesn’t bite.” The hell he doesn’t bite! He is a dog, he bites and he is going to bite me because you have not shown him who is boss and he has no fear of humans and he has no idea that being a jerk is not allowed.

Please, if you love your dog, do your job and discipline them, train them, show them the proper way to behave and make sure they know that being a jerk gets them in trouble. If you do not, you will not be able to find a vet to help them when they are in need and that will be your fault and not the vets fault. No where in our oath does it say that we have to subject ourselves to being bitten by someones dog because they treated it like a human and felt sorry for it and never disciplined it and so it now has no respect for humans and bites. If you don’t start being a responsible pet owner, your dog is not going to be seen and you do not want that to happen.

Do not let your dog be the top dog in your house! It is not fair to them and it is not fair to us in the veterinary profession when we have to fear for our safety in order to try and help them when they are sick.

Teach them to be nice, take them to uncomfortable places, make sure they know that humans are the big dog in the relationship, that does not mean you beat them that means you show them that you are the boss by not allowing them to be jerks and get away with behaviors that they shouldn’t. Your dogs life and health depend on you being a good dog owner and raising them to be good dogs.

Sincerely,
Dr Debbie and Every Vet

LET'S TALK SPITZ BREEDS

The Japanese Spitz

The Japanese Spitz are little comedians who want to make you happy and laugh. They are very loyal and smart and make wonderful companions. Game for adventures, they will tag along on a hike, a car ride, or a trip to the beach or lake. They love their humans and just enjoy being with them.

The Japanese Spitz, as a companion breed, enjoy the company of their families and truly are little comedians. They love to please their family and are thus eager to learn; they always have a smile on their face. Distinctive features include their pure white coat that has a mane-like feature about their neck. Also, like other spitz breeds, their tails curl over their back in a beautiful hair plume. A pointed muzzle likens them to a fox with a black nose, black eye rims, and ears of pointed triangles, which stand erect and move like radar towers, hearing everything going on around them and making this breed very alert.

Left the “Boy” at home this weekend and took our new young pack of show dogs through to Dunedin to four Open Shows. They were only small shows but there were some really lovely dogs exhibited. To say we were proud of not only our results but they way these young inexperienced dogs conducted themselves and improved as the weekend progressed
Our new baby puppy stole the hearts
of not only his admirers but judges alike
Baby - Talbothights Time To Reign (Khan)
Puppy - Talbothights Times Up. (Kimberly)
Junior - Talbothights Just Do It (Haley)
New Zealand Bred - CH Talbothights I’ll Rememba U (Maddy)

Rather than list all the placings I will highlight Khans 2x BABY IN SHOW at his very first show and Maddy who was shown for only a few months prior to covid then had time off to have two litters of puppies came back in to take a Reserve in Show and BEST IN SHOW in her second show weekend back
To say we are very pleased with our weekend is an under statement
Our thanks go to the judges

Southern Ladies - Robert Manning
Waikouaiti - Rebecca Stewart
South Otago - Helen Theron
Otago Kennel - Vivienne McCambridge

and the committees for all their hard work in running these shows for our up and coming young stock. And to Ashleigh who did the majority of running round the ring and Lance who handled Kimy

Lance and I had a lovely Easter Show weekend away with Ashleigh Milford and the two boys Jesse and Sam and also with Steph Tan who is here to spend a few days from Singapore.
Shows at both Mandeville Sports Center and CKA grounds at McLeans Island run by North Canterbury Kennel resulted in some lovely placings for Ch Drakon the Naster of the Game (Kona)
A NZ of Group in the first show under Gopi Krishnan - Malaysia
followed by Best of Group in the Non Sport Utility show under Rouben Dixon
The FCI show on Monday resulted in a Group 5 Best of Group win under Nichole Harrison and it was lovely to see a Japanese Spitz in the “In Show” line up
Kona received and “Excellent” score and a very nice critique
Ch Talbothights I’ll Remember and Talbothight Just Do it shared the challenges while the babies just had a good time misbehaving

TALBOTHIGHTS welcomes its newest CHAMPION

CH TALBITHIGHTS TO B OR NOT TOO B

Son of “Kona”. Ch Drakon the Master of the Game “BB” was showing great promise in the ring having beaten his father on several occasions but something made him decide that showing was not for him so we will now retire him from the ring but will continue to use him at stud. He has already left some lovely progeny with Konas movement coming through
