Two Brown Dogs at Home makes a monthly donation to Pet Refuge NZ. I have personally made an extra donation today to support this appeal. Please consider doing the same. Even if you give a couple of dollars today, it will be doubled.

Aotearoa New Zealand has appalling family violence statistics and the beautiful pets who are part of many of our families become victims along with the women & children (and at times people of other genders.)

DONATE TODAY for double the impact!

Every dollar donated on Thursday 12 June will be doubled by Pets In The City to help pets like *Snoopy.

Snoopy was at risk of her body shutting down and losing all hearing and vision.

She was in one of the worst conditions our team had ever seen. She was malnourished and underweight. Her legs and tail were raw from flea bites. Infections in her ears and eyes were seeping pus, causing vision and hearing challenges. We rushed her to the emergency vets.

Sadly, pets like Snoopy who come from violence often haven’t had access to veterinary care, either due to financial abuse or being used as a tool of control.

During her exam, the vet discovered Snoopy needed urgent dental surgery to remove decaying teeth. But this wasn’t an option right away; her body simply wouldn’t have been able to handle the sedation.

Given the many obstacles Snoopy had to overcome, our team put together an intensive care plan. She received four meals a day, ear flushes, ointments and oral antibiotics, and three different types of eye drops.

Snoopy was assigned dedicated team members responsible for managing all her medications. There was no room for error. Within a week, we started to see improvement, and her eyes brightened again.

With hope and time, our team can address her other medical concerns as she continues to regain strength.

Sadly, this is becoming an increasingly common reality at the Pet Refuge shelter. We are seeing a marked increase in the severity of violence and its effects on pets’ welfare. But this also comes with increased costs.

Now more than ever, your help matters. Providing all pets with access to veterinary treatment - at no cost to the families - is essential to our program so pets can go on to live new, safe, healthy lives.

Pets in the City are celebrating their birthday, but it’s more important to them that pets like Snoopy get the gifts. TODAY ONLY, Pets in the City will match every donation, up to $10,000.

Just $25 gives pets like Snoopy the chance to receive critical veterinary treatment and recover in safe hands.

If you are looking for an organisation to support that works with pets in need, Pet Refuge NZ is the one!!
They are currently having a donation drive. This is a quote direct from their website - which is in the link.

"What matters for us and the pets we help is security. But currently, regular donations only cover 60% of our program costs, making it ever more challenging to sustain our care and provide safety and reach more pets and families trying to escape violence.
By signing up for a regular plan you give us the security to say 'yes' to every pet that needs our help.
Knowing you have our back, every month, means we can have theirs. No matter the time or day."

Pet Refuge works alongside Woman's Refuge, Shine, the Police and other organisations to get women (and men), children and pets to safety when impacted by domestic violence.
Unfortunately, New Zealand has terrible domestic violence statistics. Violence towards pets and threats of violence towards pets is part of the picture. Research strongly indicates women do not leave violence because of the risks to their pets.

Here are Two Brown Dogs at Home, we make a monthly donation. Please join us in supporting this critical work to enable women, children & their pets to begin new safe lives together.

Because for that pet, your caring means the world. It’s not just about giving them a safe bed, or nutritious food. It’s about giving pets and their families the chance to escape violence once and for all. To have safety, happiness and the confidence to live their best lives free from fear. And e...

Phew!!! I haven't even advertised this year and am now fully booked out - even a little over booked - from Christmas Eve until the 29th-ish. There is no more space in my schedule those days.

There are a couple of spaces only over New Years, or if I'm already coming to your street. So get in quick if you need those dates. That's from the 30th Dec through to the 3rd Jan.

My recommendation is that if you are heading away in January from the 3rd that you make your booking with me NOW. I will start advertising for January in a week or two. So get in first.

The holiday season can be a time of distress and violence for some women and children. Supporting Pet Refuge over this time may open up options for women wanting to escape an abusive situation.

Today is White Ribbon Day, a global day for the elimination of violence against women. Our core purpose is to remove a major barrier for families, regardless gender, to escape violence by temporarily caring for their pets, but 96% of those we’ve helped have been women.

On days like today we’re so grateful to be here to help everyone who needs us.

Our Founder, Julie, often attends speaking engagements to help raise awareness of our cause and at one of these events she had the opportunity to talk candidly with a family violence survivor, *Bridgette.

Bridgette was an elderly woman who was finally taking the step to leave an abusive relationship she’d endured for most of her life. She told Julie of her love for her cat and how much she was looking forward to starting their new chapter together. If Pet Refuge had existed decades earlier, Bridgette would have left sooner.

We are the only charity in New Zealand that provides pets with temporary shelter and care so families can escape violence.

Today, in support of all the women, men, and children who need a way out please spread the word by sharing this post and encourage your friends and family to donate. Every dollar counts.

This is a survey on the very important topic both for our NZ cats and out NZ wildlife.
It is open to all - cat owner or not - so have a look and take the time to complete it if you can.

🚨 Call for survey participants: Outdoor Access for Owned Cats 🚨

Companion Animals NZ (CANZ) has teamed up with UC Davis (USA) to explore public views on outdoor access for cats. We’re surveying both cat owners and non-cat owners in New Zealand to gain insights into how people house their cats and their thoughts on free-roaming cats’ environmental impact.

This research is key as pressure grows to keep cats indoors, and we want to understand how this affects cat welfare and wildlife conservation.

📢 Open to anyone 18+

Starting next month here at Two Brown Dogs at Home we will be donating to the Safe Beds for Pets programme.

I would love for some of our clients to consider a monthly or one-off donation to what I feel is one of the most essential charity organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The family violence statistics for NZ are horrible. Clearly working to change that is critical, and in the meantime, helping in any way possible to support people of all genders to leave abusive situations.

Will you join is is supporting Pet Refuge if you are in a financial position to do so??

A place for pets to wait while their families leave abusive relationships. The Pet Refuge is turning three and celebrating the many animals and people they've helped to safety

*URGENT URGENT post from the team at Their Voice NZ
The reason the original post is dated 2022 is because the owners originally wanted to rehome then.

Hazel & Peanut will be euthed tomorrow (Thursday) if homes can not be found for them.

●BOTH DOGS HAVE BEEN SAVED●
**29/05/2024 - BOTH DOGS WILL BE EUTHANIZED TOMORROW MORNING (30/05/24) THEY CAN BE SEPRATED, ALSO WILL TRAVEL THE SOUTH ISLAND TO DROP OFF**

**EXPERIENCED HOMES ONLY**

**We are posting this on behalf of Haze and Peanuts owners**

Haze is very affectionate and cuddly, like humans more then other dogs.. tends to get defensive around food. Knows how to sit, shake paws, stay. Loves playing fetch, chasing sticks and going swimming. Good if walked alone but tends to pull on her lead. Not good with other animals. Haze gets grass reactions and swells up if stung by bees. She is okay to have an antihistamine when this happens.

Peanut is very affectionate, loves human interaction and other animals.. will play well one on one but has snapped at dogs in the past so needs to be watched. He knows how to shake paws, sit, wait. Peanut loves to play and adventure. Peanut pulls on a lead and try's to greet everyone.

We would like both dogs to be rehomed together if possible. They would not be suited for a home with younger children or other animals. They would need a fully fenced yard. Both dogs are de-sexed, microchipped and up to date with their vaccinations.

Please send the page a message if you think you'd be a suitable home for Haze and Peanut.

This sweet tabby face is Tonks. Tonks and her family are some of my frequent flyers. Tonks is technically quite severely disabled with hip dysplasia. Not that she knows that, and not that you’d notice at first glance as she zooms around the house and garden. Of the three cats in her family, she is the most playful and active and can scale trees somewhat like SpiderCat!
An At Home service is perfect for Tonks, though, because it means she is in a familiar environment and knows exactly where she can successfully run, jump, and climb. Her mum Maggie and brother Alfie are very content lounging in their favourite sunny spots and having a visiting “Food Lady” turn up to keep the food bowls filled. For the times that their own human mum isn’t around, I have passed their stringent feline standards as a suitable alternative food slave!
