Anxious Dogs, and How to Help
1. Exercise is so important when it comes to dog that demonstrates anxious behaviours. When a dog is not physically fulfilled, all of that energy has to go somewhere.
Whining, separation distress, pacing, destruction of property and self mutilation are all examples of anxiety.
By giving your dog an outlet for their physical requirements, they don't have the energy for the undesirable behaviours. Without reinforcement, the behaviours occur less.
2. Structure. Dogs like routine, they like to know what to expect. Dogs that have consistent meal times, training regimes and exercise schedules are commonly less anxious than dogs that have no set routine.
3. Boundaries and Limitations.
Is your dog always nudging you for affection, or getting under your feet when you are cooking in the kitchen? Implementing boundaries, such as respecting personal space and creating no go zones within the household can also help to improve your dogs behaviour.
Limiting your dogs freedom isn't cruel, it could actually help your dog. Crating is a great example, it keeps them safe when you can't supervise them, and gives them their own space to sleep at night.
Feeding tip!
1. Ditch the bowl! Scatter your dogs food on your lawn and let them sniff it out. Or use your dogs food throughout the day for training.
There have been a lot of questions about the slatmill this week, thank you everybody for your interest!
Here are the top questions I have been getting.
🐾 How long are the sessions?
All slatmill sessions are a maximum of 30 minutes.
🐾 How much?
Official pricelist to come soon.
🐾 Will my dog receive training?
Yes, they will! Dogs each have different motivators, and finding out what works best for your dog is part of the process.
🐾 How do I know if my dog will like it?
We don't know until we try. Dogs that are already confident in new situations pick it up more quickly, but that's not to say unconfident dogs won't enjoy it.
🐾 How long will it take my dog to run on the slatmill?
Some dogs run on it first go. Some dogs take two, three, four or more sessions to get the hang of it. It is important not to rush and to let the dog take its time.
🌟 The main point for anybody interested in slatmilling their dog is to not have high expectations. If your dog doesn't do too well on it the first time, don't worry, it's totally normal. They will be better the next time.
🌟 Slatmill sessions are a maximum of once weekly for high intensity dogs that run faster than 15kph.
🌟 If your dog is doing well, the session may only be 15 minutes because we have to safely built up your dogs endurance. The time is increased by 5 minutes a session.
Got any other questions? Let me know 👌
Also, my own personal dogs make it look easy! And so they should 😂 They are all previously treadmill trained and it makes a huge difference.

The saying is, you have to walk before you can run 🏃
Not true for huskies 🤣
If the dogs are feeling too excited and too pent up, a good old run is what they need before they can focus on the walk.
Sometimes, you have to let them get it all out and let them have fun.
I could have put these guys in a down stay for 15 minutes to calm them down, or, we could go for a little 15 minute blitz on the scooter. Both are important at the right times.
The result - a much more calmer walk 👍
Maccy Boi 🐾
Some dogs are harder than the others.
It is my job to work out what works best for each individual dog.
Mac is just an unconfident dude. Any sign of noise or trouble and he goes into flight mode.
He is also massive, and is not even a year old yet, and so when he goes, he is like a freight train.
Teaching him to walk loose leash without any additional tools has been my main goal these last few weeks.
And look at him go. We did this right next to a building suite (you can hear the noise).
Go Mac, super proud of your progress 🥰
