❌☠️ 🐥EASTER DANGERS FOR YOUR PETS ❌☠️🐥

With Easter fast approaching, we want to remind you that, although yummy Easter treats are lovely for us humans, they can potentially be very harmful to our beloved pets.
☠️🐱🐶🐈🐕💕

❌Easter eggs and chocolate 🥚🍫 - contain theobromine which is toxic to cats and dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more poisonous it is – giving any type of chocolate must be avoided.

❌Hot cross buns 🍪 - contain dried fruit such as currants, sultanas and raisins – and all of these are toxic to cats and dogs and can cause kidney failure.

❌Spring bulbs and plants 🌷🌼💐🌺 - such as tulips, daffodils, and amaryllis are poisonous to cats and dogs, and some can be fatal if eaten or cause nasty gastrointestinal upsets.

❌Lilies 🌸🪴☠️- are extremely toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure if any part of the plant, including the pollen, is ingested.

❌Easter decorations 🌿🌾- such as straw or plastic grass from Easter baskets, can be appealing for our pets to eat. These can, however, cause obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract, which can be life-threatening.

✅If you are concerned that your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have, please contact your vet immediately for advice.

Does your cat's belly hang low? He or she might not actually be fat!

The primordial pouch is a loose flap of skin that runs along the length of the cat’s belly but is most pronounced towards the rear. It can often be seen swaying from side to side when the cat walks or trots.

Pet owners often attribute the primordial pouch to weight gain, but it is common on cats of all shapes and sizes, even slim ones.

What is the function of the primordial pouch?

We don’t know for sure, but the most obvious theories are that it serves four purposes.

1) The primordial pouch acts as a protection to the internal organs during a fight or attack. If you have ever seen cats in a fight, you may have noticed that they often kick each other with their hind legs and their sharp claws which could potentially damage these vital organs.

2) Allows cats to stretch out when running at high speed or jumping.

3) For greater stomach expansion if a cat gorges on a large meal.

4) To provide a fat reserve in the event of leaner times, though the jury is out on that one because the primordial pouch is mostly loose skin and fur!

Here's some great information borrowed from the Animal Emergency Service in Australia.

📣 Grapes, sultanas, and raisins are dangerous for dogs! 📣

Unfortunately, our fluffy canine friends can't enjoy grapes, sultanas, or raisins like us humans. These fruits can cause fatal kidney damage to dogs. There is no known toxic dose, which means every pooch who ingests any needs to be treated to prevent potential damage to their kidneys. Treatment depends on the size of your pooch and how long ago they ingested the fruit, but the faster you get your pet to the vet the better. Don’t wait!

When you arrive at your vet:
🐾 Your pet will usually be made to vomit to reduce toxin exposure
🐾 Then they are given charcoal which attempts to bind any remaining toxin to neutralise it and remove it out of the gastrointestinal tract faster. As you can see here charcoal administration can be a messy process, but most patients don't seem to mind.
🐾 Some patients also require tests to check their kidney values and up to 72 hours on an IV drip

Sneaky places grapes, sultanas, and raisins can hide include, fruit cake, hot cross buns, muesli bars, fruit and nut trail mixes, kids puree, fruit drinks/smoothies - the list is endless. Always check ingredients before feeding your pets treats, or stick to quality pet treats only!
