Last night was the start of our term 3 level 1 class with dogs. All pups and handlers did really well and we can't wait to see the progress they make over the duration of the course!

Many thanks to Metro Paws Doggy Daycare & Grooming Frankton for letting us use your amazing facilities this term so we can shelter from this wet and windy weather!

MUST READ BEFORE ENROLLING.

There are a few things that we require you to provide to be able to participate in our classes. It is important to note that whilst all of these items can be acquired at low cost, there will be further costs beyond the initial enrolment fee.

- A dog bed is required. While we strongly recommend using a raised dog bed, you can use something as simple as a towel, a mat, or a regular dog bed on the floor. Please note that if it is on the floor it may get wet.

- Food rewards are also essential. These do not have to be expensive packaged treats. A good low cost option is Chunky or Possyum dog roll cut into small pieces. Regular kibble is usually not a good option as it is often not tasty enough to compete with the distractions we experience at class.

- A training pouch to store your food rewards. This needs to be easily accessible and hands free. Cheap bags with a waist belt are a good low cost option that can be found at Kmart or Op shops.

- Long lines up to 10m in length to use for certain activities. Horse lunge lines are cheaper than dog specific long lines and can be purchased from equestrian shops. Another low cost option is to make one with a length of rope attached securely to a clip.

- No choke/check chains or slip leads are permitted. Regular flat collars or harnesses, and standard leads are acceptable. Retractable/flexi leads are also not advised for classes due to numerous safety reasons.

The below is also required by either club policy or by council bylaw.

- If you have a female dog and she comes on heat, policy is that you leave your dog at home. You are welcome to attend without your dog so that you don't miss out on information.

- Under the Dog Control Act 1996, it is legally required for all dogs over 4 months to be registered and microchipped, with up to date registration tags clearly displayed.

If you have any further questions around these items and policies, please reach out to us via message or email.

Kind regards,
Hamilton Dog Obedience Club

1. Stick to their normal routine. Make sure dogs have been walked and cats have their usual play time.

2. Bring them inside. Close cat/dog doors and if taking your dog out to toilet, do so early, and on lead. DO NOT take them out to watch...

3. Set up a hidey-hole/den and sound proof it if possible.

4. Close the curtains and turn on some background noise. It will reduce the suddenness and drown it out.

5. Some animals like thundershirts, so if yours is used to one, pop it on early. Don't try it for the first time tonight though! Calming caps or ear covers may also help.

6. Give them something delicious to eat or keep them occupied with food puzzles (e.g. a kong with meat in it)

7. Stay with them, and yes you can reassure them! If they want to be stroked, do so. If not, just stay nearby. Stay calm.

8. Feed high value food (if they can eat...) while it's happening. e.g. a peice of schmacko or a temptation for each bang.

9. Use Adaptil or Feliway (Calming pheremones) - The diffuser or sprays.

If your dog or cat really struggles, there ARE things we can do to help. Medications can help this year, and we can look at behaviour modification (desensitising) techniques for next season.
Noise sensitivity is something I can help you all with, so please- reach out and we can prepare for New Years or next fireworks season!

p.s. If you have horses- See our other post which covers management for them too!
