Showing what a difference Harvest Grains feeds makes to the horses at the stud.

Shared with the owners permission.

I really have to point out that this mare is a difficult mare to manage and is known for being incredibly clingy so when she needed to be weaned from her foal, it had to be done cold turkey. Because we had carefully managed this mare for her foaling and knew her very well, her owner decided that we would be the best place to send her.

She arrived and was stressed for the first day until we found the right group and friend for her. We were able to get her covered now she was weaned with the rug the owner sent with her and put her on our go to combination for helping to settle the gut and put on weight - smart chaff, breed n spell and coco mash.

Before and after in just over 3 weeks.

We could not accomplish this without the feed and the knowledge behind the feed and manufacturing process at Harvest Grains.

This could be why NZ is such a brilliant nursery ground for horses ๐Ÿฅฐ

Most foals are able to be outside in those first 4 weeks of life compared to being in a stable or barn in some other countries.

A ground-breaking study has found that the future success of a racehorse can be predicted by bacteria in the foal's gut when it is just one month old.

The recent veterinary study, which was co-authored by a number of eminent vets including Rossdales Clinical Director and stud vet Oliver Pynn, analysed faecal samples, measuring the bacteria in the digestive systems of more than 50 thoroughbred foals from 5 stud farms across the country within the first four weeks of their life to assess the range and abundance of bacterial species in their gut.

The study found that the greater diversity of bacterial species a foal had in its gut at just four weeks old directly correlated to its future health, and its success on the racecourse.

Thanks Cambridge Raceway for another great night and congratulations to the winner of Race 3 - Red Rackham!

We were privileged to share in the wonderful story behind Red Rackham told by his owner and breeder in the winner lounge.

It's been a pleasure meeting so many new people from the sponsoring of these races to raise money for the NZ Horse Ambulance Trust, but we are fast approaching our foaling season and will be underway with that shortly which will leave us little time for much else.

If you can donate even $1 it all helps โค๏ธ

Rodney Animal Rescue do an amazing job and is one of the charities we support, whether through donations or our time.

Just got in doors finally ๐Ÿ˜ด

Results of mums blood tests were good ๐Ÿฅณ

Bubs bloods came back showing signs of infection so will be on antibiotics, we rechecked his IgG levels, they are low so he will be having some plasma ... โœจ๏ธ liquid gold โœจ๏ธ ..(about $1,000 for plasma alone)

This is their story:

This stunning pair came from a cry for help
Lovely horse family rescued the mare when she was emaciated and did an absolutely amazing job, they definitely thought so as she was putting on weight splendidly, but didn't realise until right the way in, that she was actually in foal ๐Ÿ‘€

No one knew her dates so it really was a wait and see
Mum foaled effortlessly but baby found it hard to latch and get the colostrum needed at the crucial time

The family were pretty worried, they got a local horse midwife who helped get the foal latching, and the family got the vets out, to try do the best they could for both mum and foal, and foal was given a bag of plasma due to his IgG levels being low
( - ideally baby needed a few more bags but finances were restricted which we all know how this financial climate is hitting us, but they did thee absolute best they could... 1 bag of plasma is better than no bag - and a bag of plasma isn't cheap)

With the after care of the foal there was intense instructions, surrounding possible immune and sickness issues aswell as having to try medicate him ... the foal had other ideas and made it rather hard for the family to help him (he is very spirited hehe)

Their land was also not set up well enough and only days old the foal didn't care about his mum and he would explore the outside world .. where his mum couldn'treach him.. he even had to have human safety shields standing around the fencing perimeter so he didn't hurt himself

I was on the phone to human mummy yesterday whilst she stood in the paddock ensuring everyone was safe... poor human mummy had sleepless nights, and just knew for the best outcome for this little dude was to surrender him to the rescue

Thank you to this lovely family for saving this stunning mare, and in turn saving 2 lives without knowing โค๏ธ

Once again thank you to the amazing team at Veterinary Associates Equine staying late again for us to ensure this foal get his plasma โœจ๏ธ๐Ÿ’š

If you would like to donate as little as $1 we would be grateful

Following on from our post yesterday celebrating 11 years of SG Stud, we also would like to mention another crucial part to the stud:

Our success does not also just come from our fantastic vets and our management practices, but it also comes from the nutritional side as well.

After many years of searching for the right kind of feed to meet the requirements of stallions, mares, foals and growing youngstock, we came across Harvest Grains.

Not only is the company local, but they also manufacture in New Zealand using as many locally grown ingredients as possible.

The knowledge and dedication that Harvest Grains have regarding not just the nutritional needs for horses, but also the knowledge from where and how ingredients come from and how they can affect the horse, how manufacturing can change the utilisation of the feedโ€ฆ. their knowledge is off the scale!

We are very fortunate to be able to have these feeds and knowledge available, as this is another very key part of our success!

For more information, please visit their website: www.harvestgrains.co.nz

Wow, 11 years ago today SG Stud started happening...

Incredible how far we have come.

Over the last 11 years our first cycle conception rates have been phenomenal.

From just doing fresh/chilled AI for sport horses and walk in, walk out services for TB racing mares, we have never dropped below a 90% first cycle conception rate.

Once we introduced frozen semen AI on site, we have maintained close to an 82% first cycle conception rate.

We put this down to our careful and individual management of mares on site. Making sure that they are happy both physically and mentally. This is also thanks to our wonderful specialist reproductive vet Dr Swanand from Impulsion Veterinary Fertility who flies over from Canada to do the breeding season here.

We also wish to acknowledge the absolutely incredible veterinary team at Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre who also do some of our reproductive work when Swanand isn't here and who are our vets for all other Stud related work including all our emergency foalings. Working alongside them is such a privilege as their professionalism and dedication is second to non.

We are taking bookings for getting mares in foal this season. We ended up with a wait list last season, so if you are thinking about putting your mare in foal, book in sooner rather than later!

For more information, please email [email protected] or you can easily and quickly book in your mare by going to our online booking form found on our website www.sgstud.co.nz

04/03/2024

While this seems like a hefty charge, the vets do indeed spend a lot of time with emergency call outs as well as end up in some fairly remote places.

With the lack of new vets coming through, the vets we currently have are completely overtaxed on their time. Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre do an excellent job of trying to rest their vets whenever possible to avoid burn out.

There will soon be a day when vets are only able to travel a certain radius from the clinic for an after hours call - like what happens in America and even some places in Australia.

Now we are in the quieter part of our year, SG Stud is able to offer an out clinic rehab/care service once the initial emergency has been taken care of. We are a minimal distance (just over 9km) from the clinic and can offer on site care while still remaining close.

SG Stud is a great option for care if you live a fair distance away and your horse/pony still requires fairly regular attention from a vet.

We have spaces open now, so please enquire.

Important Announcement to After Hours Fees:
We wanted to take a moment to inform you of some adjustments to our out of hours fees, which will come into effect starting 1st March 2024.
We understand that any changes in fees can be met with concern, and we want to assure you that our primary goal has always been, and will always be, to provide the highest standard of care for your equine companions. This adjustment is aimed at enhancing the level of service we can offer.
In recent times, equine practices globally have encountered significant challenges in meeting out-of-hours demands. Internationally some practices have been forced to withdraw this service altogether, which is a route we will never take. However, to ensure that we can continue to meet your needs effectively and sustainably, we are making some changes to our pricing structure

The After Hours Call Out Fee for all calls that are attended off-site will now be charged at $300.00 including GST, with any additional charges on top of this. The veterinary consult fee is an additional separate charge as is mileage. All calls that are attended in-clinic will remain at the same price of $186.00 including GST for the After Hours Call Out Fee.

This new fee structure more accurately reflects the true cost of providing this service. We encourage clients to bring their horses into the clinic for emergencies or urgent care whenever possible. The cases will not necessarily be hospitalised; the aim is manage the majority of these cases on an out-patient basis. This shift in clinic management of our-of-hours calls allows us to maximise our efficiency by minimising travel time. It also ensuring our veterinarians are readily available for true emergencies with the smallest possible response time. We cover a wide geographical area and when the on-call vet is working remotely from the clinic it leaves us exposed and compromises our ability to meet the standards for which we are striving.
Moreover, bringing horses into the clinic enables us to provide a superior level of care by having all the necessary equipment and materials on hand, hopefully saving money on repeat visits. We are also able to receive additional assistance if required. This ultimately translates into better outcomes for your horse and peace of mind for you; knowing that they are receiving the best possible care.
We will also be implementing fees for phone consultations where advice is provided and medication is dispensed. While we understand the convenience of remote consultations, this fee accounts for the veterinarianโ€™s time and expertise in evaluating your horse and itโ€™s needs. Please also respect your veterinarianโ€™s personal time. It is a convenience to clients that our veterinarians share their mobile phone numbers but our veterinarians receive countless messages at weekends and in evenings when they are not at work. Urgent messages out-of-hours should be directed to the veterinarian on-call and non-urgent messages should wait until normal office hours.
We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we navigate these changes

It's absolutely pouring with rain (not moaning as we really need it!) but made me think about this quote I read ages ago and popped up in my newsfeed today which I thought was quite relevant as I drag myself outside to check and feed the horses on the stud....

"Next time you say "damn, must be nice" you might want to understand a lifestyle that made it possible!

8-5 didn't make it.
Parking on the couch to watch TV didnt make it.
Sleeping in on Saturdays didnt make it.
Calling in when sick didnt make it.
Being content with where we're at didnt make it.

It came from some 15-20 hour days.
It came from beating the sun up.
It came from working on weekends.
It came from sacrificing family time.
It came from wanting a little better tomorrow.

These are a few things to consider before you throw out "damn, must be nice" at someone! We are all products of our competence. And extra efforts are what make the biggest differences at the end of the day!"
