Santa is coming to CareVets again this year for pet photos!! His schedule is very busy this summer and he is with us exclusively for ONE DAY ONLY!

Join us on Saturday the 7th of December between 11am and 3pm for your annual Santa Paws photos 📸🐾

As an added bonus, the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Brigade will be joining us that day with their big yellow fire truck and a fundraising sausage sizzle during Santa's visit 🚒👩‍🚒👨‍🚒

Did you know oral disease has become a top health problem for dogs? 🐶🦷

Here are our top tips for preventing dental problems and keeping your canine’s smile in tip-top form:
✅ A nutritious diet
✅ Chew treats can help remove plaque and provide stimulation for the gums.
❌ Watch out for wood – throwing sticks to dogs or letting your dog pick up a piece of wood can result in splinters and gum damage.
❌ Don’t let your pet chew on hard materials like stones or even some types of bones. They can wear down and even break teeth, damage gums, and lead to infection.

Ugh - That Breath!

Have you ever regretted smooches with your cat or dog? Recoiled at the fish breath? 😵🐟 Many people think it's normal. Well, it's not!

Bad breath in our pets, often called halitosis, is most commonly caused by periodontal disease. This can and should be treated as it will continue to get worse, can lead to other health issues, and most importantly, can be causing your pet pain that you may not be aware of (dental pain can be some of the most uncomfortable, as I'm sure you'll agree).

Let's Talk About Dental Discomfort

Have you experienced dental pain? It's often touted as one of the worst. Just by looking at you, most people wouldn't know anything was wrong. You might still eat fairly normally and carry on with some painkillers until your dentist appointment.

But what about your pet? 🐶🐱 How can you tell if they're experiencing dental pain? They can't just tell us! 🦷😔

Periodontal disease is widespread among pets and can cause serious discomfort, often without us even noticing.

Your pet is there for you when you're in pain, so let's make sure they're not hiding any of their own. Let us help check out those chompers - here's to no more dental pain! 🐾💕

🦷 MOLAR MONDAY 🦷

Shown, is an example of what we might find happening in your cat's mouth during a dental exam or COHAT(complete oral health assessment and treatment).

The first image shows an abnormality affecting the molar tooth, where gingiva (or gum tissue) has grown over the tooth lesion to act as a sticky plaster, protecting the tooth. 🩹

The diagnostic image in the second picture, shows the tooth is severely damaged and the back root has been resorbed.

The exact cause of tooth resorption is unknown, but reasonably common in cats, and requires dental extraction. ❓

This demonstrates the importance of yearly exams and full oral exams under general anesthesia, when suggested by your veterinary health professional. 😸

Hidden Surprises! 🙀

Did you know it's easy to miss dental issues just by looking at a pet's mouth with the naked eye?

This kitty appeared to have a healthy set of teeth at first glance. However, radiographs revealed significant dental damage! 🦷

Thanks to this advanced imaging, we know exactly what needs to be fixed - no more dental pain for this cat! 💕

🦷 WEDNESDAY WISDOM 🦷

Did you know that GOLD standard dental care starts at home? 🏠

Daily tooth brushing with an animal appropriate paste, often poultry or malt flavoured, can keep your pets teeth in tip-top condition. ☑️

This process is best started from a young age so your pet becomes used to the routine.

Using a damp face cloth to rub your pets gums can be a good way to introduce cleaning, before progressing to a finger-brush or full length pet specific tooth brush.

⚠️Beware of human pastes containing Xylitol, which are dangerous for pets!⚠️

Here are the latest gorgeous graduates from our PUPPY PRESCHOOL during a behaviour evening with Patricia from Dog Minds. 👨‍🎓

Our classes are kept to a smaller group size, so may suit pups that aren't as confident or for owners that need a little extra support.

NEXT CLASS STARTS JULY 2nd - suitable for pups up to 16 weeks with at least one vaccination already administered. 💉
