Dogs might munch on grass for various reasons! Some enjoy the taste, while others may seek roughage or simply pass the time out of boredom.
Whatever the reason, it’s not necessarily a bad habit!

We wanted to share a radiograph ("xray") from a brave wee cat we have had in hospital recently.

A blocked bladder, or urethral obstruction is a serious and life-threatening condition that requires immediate veterinary attention.

Male cats are especially prone to urinary blockages due to their narrow urethras. If left untreated, it can lead to kidney damage, bladder rupture, and even death.

You can see the large balloon structure which is the enlarged bladder (as he cannot urinate) and if you look closely, you can see the density along the urethra, which is the obstruction.

📌 Symptoms to watch for include:

• Straining to urinate
• Frequent trips to the litter box
• Blood in urine
• Painful urination (sometimes vocalising)
• Licking the ge***al areas
• Lethargy or hiding behaviour

🚑 What to do:
• Contact your vet immediately for urgent assessment and interventions

Early intervention is key to a healthy recovery! 🐾❤️

This week, we have had a couple of emergency situations in which we have been grateful to find our patients had microchips, and this allowed us to contact owners promptly from their details on the NZCAR database.
Microchipping your pet can significantly increase the chances of reuniting with them if they ever get lost!
This is your reminder to book your pet in for microchipping - cats, dogs and rabbits!!
Is your pet already microchipped? Ensure your details are all up to date on the National Companion Animal Database: www.animalregister.co.nz

🐾 Microchipping is a permanent ID: Unlike collars and tags that can get lost or removed, microchips provide a permanent form of identification.

🐾 Quick and Painless: The microchipping process is quick, safe, and causes minimal discomfort to your pet. Our staff are never short of treats and distractions to help reassure your pet if needed.

🐾 Universal scanners: Vets and animal shelters have scanners to read the chip, ensuring your pet’s information is accessible nationwide.

📅 Schedule a microchipping appointment with us today and give your furry friend an extra layer of security. A microchip is their ticket home.

TGIF!! 🎉🎉
Here is a fun fact to finish off the week and the month 😁

We have all heard the sweet sweet sounds of a cat purring, we all associate it with our cat being happy right? Well, there are a few other reasons why your cat might purr. 🤔

Has your cat ever come in for a vet visit and poured their way through the consultation, and you have thought oh wow they must love it here!
But that could mean that your cat might s bit stressed out. 🙀

Cats will sometimes purr when they are stressed, hurt, unwell or giving birth.
The frequency of a cat's purr ranges between 25 - 150 hertz and is considered a self-soothing mechanism, so if your cat is purring away on that consult room table it could be because they are a little anxious about being there and calming them selfs down by purring, how cool is that! 😍😍

Myth busters Tuesday 🗣

“Your Dog’s Mouth is Clean and Even Antiseptic”

You may have heard this phrase being said a few time in your life, but I am here to tell you this is a myth 🙀
The reality is, that your dogs mouth has over 200 different types of bacteria in it.

Have you ever wondered why we send your pets home with an e collar after a surgery?
Not only is this to prevent any sutures being chewed out but also because the excessive licking some dogs do can introduce a host of bacteria and potentialy cause an infection, this can lead to more vet visits, more medications and more money spent 😬

Now Im not saying don't give your pooch all the kisses they deserve but maybe try stay away from the mouth 👄

FUN FACT FRIDAY!
Did you know that dogs hearing is 40x better than humans? The area of cells in the brain that detect smells is around 40 times larger in dogs than it is in humans.
This means your dog can pick up on way more smells than we ever could. This is why dogs often used to sniff out people, drugs and even money!! 🙀

Welcome to Myth Buster Tuesdays!

Myth: I don't see any fleas on my pet, so they don't have any.

This is a myth! 😱 Believe it or not, 95% of the fleas in your house at any given time do not live on your pet. The vast majority of fleas in an environment aren’t adult fleas, which is what you are likely to see when you’re looking for them on your pet.

However, these problematic little creatures spend most of their time in the house as “babies”—eggs, larvae, and pupae. These stages of the life cycle are ones you will never see. Just one adult female flea can lay up to 2,000 eggs in her short lifetime, so finding a single flea can be a problem.

To make matters worse, many adult fleas are removed when your pet is cleaning, making it even less likely that you will see them. So even if you aren’t seeing fleas, they may very well be there. Check in the fur for flea dirt, which looks like tiny dark specks, as well as for excessive scratching and sores created from your pet scratching after fleas bite.

The only way to ensure that your pet does not have fleas is to keep them on a prescription flea prevention year-round.

‼️PARVO WARNING‼️

Parvovirus is starting to run rampant through the Waikato 😷

It's that time of year again and we are seeing an increase in dogs infected with parvovirus cases.
Parvovirus causes severe disease, especially in puppies and can be fatal.
It is highly contagious and can remain in the environment for years.
The only way to prevent parvovirus is by vaccinating your puppy against it and keep your adult dogs vaccines up to date.

If you see any of the symptoms listed in the picture below, contact your veterinary clinic ASAP.
