Can you believe our Commando x Chevie pups are close to 9 months old?? Time flies by when you are having fun :). Mackey, Henderson & Nizmo are in the most amazing homes, while Qvik got stuck with us! Needless to say, we are grateful to all who have/are part of the boy's journey. Enjoy the pics 😁

FIVE: To say that Five is amazing is an understatement. You have to see him to believe he is so, so much more! Not only is he a bloody hard worker and a great leader, his temperament is outstanding. His is our 'go to' when there are any puppies that need entertaining or supervising. We called upon his services this weekend with a little Border Collie called Sage. Sage came and stayed the weekend while her parents took a break. She has been on crate rest for months due to an injury that has taken a long time to heal. Five knew just how to deal with her desperate need to play -he flopped on his side to minimise the bouncing, and Sage is now tucked up for a nap! Five now has another young friend 😍 He is the perfect stud dog -he believes in equal parenting!

QUESTION: What can you do? You finally manage to grow a small patch of grass in your badly abused backyard (thanks to both Mother Nature & the beasts) and your sweetest, most helpful lad somehow got thrown over the barrier on said healthy grass. What can you do? Nothing. Except admire his beautiful smile, take a picture and (mock) scold him!

Flashback Friday: To when the handsome (and sweet) Five was still living in Alaska and working as a professional athlete. Five now spends his Winters running with some of his old team mates and his offspring and Summers just chilling with his love Chevie. Five may be big but is the sweetest lad who is the most wonderful puppy wrangler 😍 He is AHE clear and is looking forward to his next litter.

A very Happy Birthday to this Cheeky Chicken! Chevie has given so much to the Kennel in many ways; Our foundation B*tch who has had 9 wonderful pups. and loves a good conversation! She is also very clever and cunning and will sniff out her kids toys miles away and destroy them (usually before they get to have any fun). Chevie is also a Sassy leader who is more than happy to call the shots if you aren't paying attention! Happy Birthday Beautiful! 😍

LOOK at them! These babies are now 2 years old. Some have already started taking on the world, some are biding their time for next season. WE wish the beautiful Ezka, Seb, Eli, Drea and baby boy Blitz (who is technically 2 tomorrow) the best day. You are very important to us and represent many years of hard work, many dollars and much trust shown to us by Aliy Zirkle. We are proud of each of you and are blessed that some of you went to amazing people who are now family. Happy Birthday Unicorns! 🥰😘

We are delighted to announce the arrival of 12 week old Alaskan Husky Mackey into our fold. Lovingly bred by Sheryll and Ilona from Icemist Kennel in New Zealand, Mackey made the very long journey from Napier to Auckland and then down to Tasmania on Thursday. We can't thank Michelle from Elite Pet Services New Zealand for organising all of Mackey's flights, his vet check and with his care during his overnight stay in Auckland.

Mackey's family tree is one to admire and comes from phenomenal bloodlines. For anyone who has followed the famous 1000 mile races in Alaska, being the Iditarod or the Yukon Quest the following names will be familiar to you. For those people who have never heard of these races, we can tell you that these races are tough, traversing 1000 miles of rugged snow and ice covered mountainous terrain, just the musher and their dog team. The dogs thrive in these conditions and are the ultimate athletes. The race has multiple check points, mandatory rests and provide exceptional vet care for the dogs and these races are only successful due to the help of the many volunteers who mark trails, cook meals for the mushers, help transport all of the drop bags to check points etc.

So that brings us to Mackey's bloodlines which we are incredibly excited about.

Lance Mackey - *4 times Iditarod champion - his foundation dog 'Zorro' is legendary with much written about him and happens to be our Mackey's great grandad.

Aliy Zirkle of SP Kennel fame - her Venus is Mackey's great grandmother, she competed in 4 Iditarods and many 300 mile races. 'Venus' and 'Zorro' were parents to 'Quito', Mackey's grandma. 'Quito' was an exceptional lead dog, ran the Yukon Quest and Iditarod back to back for 5 years in a row and was a Golden Harness winner twice (The Golden harness award is “presented in honour of the loyalty, endurance and perseverance of the Champion Lead Dog throughout the race”). Aliy Zirkle is quoted as saying "Quito was the most talented sled dog that they have ever had the privilege to know"

SP Kennels 'Nacho', is Mackey's grandad, winning the Yukon Quest twice and 3 times runner up in the Iditarod and a multiple winner of the 300 mile Copper Basin races.

SP Kennel's 'Olivia' is Mackey's other grandma - she competed in the Iditarod 7 times, the Yukon Quest 4 times, and the Copper Basin 6 times - and is nicknamed 'Wonder Woman.'

Another outstanding dog from SP Kennel is 'Chevie'. Chevie is Mackey's mum and has competed in the Iditarod and many other mid distance races before moving in 2021 from Alaska to Icemist Kennel in New Zealand to live.

Mackey's dad is Commando - also of SP Kennel fame, and his skills as a sled dog are unsurpassed and he is an outstanding lead dog. He ran the Iditarod 7 times and the Yukon Quest 5 times along with many mid distance races.

Mackey is going to be a wonderful asset to us here at Sled Dog Adventures Tasmania and whilst he won't be running any long distance races like the generations before him, he will enjoy meeting and greeting our many tour guests and being able to run each winter with us for many years to come. We certainly hope that we can do him proud and we are very humbled by the trust placed in us by his breeders Sheryll and Ilona.

Happy belated Birthday FIVE! In the midst of all the puppy chaos we forgot a very important day. Our Big, Beautiful Five turned 9! This guy is one of our core team members, with the strength of an Ox and the patience of a Saint. He is the sweetest dog, with a love for puppies and belly rubs. Most who meet him cannot believe the things he has accomplished. Five has 6 x 1000-mile races under his belt, as well as multiple mid distance races and is a Yukon Quest Champion.

Farewell little Mackey! First born Mackey has had a huge day flying and has reached his forever home! He will be well and truly loved, and is in the perfect place where this clever lad can reach his full potential. Do us proud our Tasmanian Devil! We miss you 😍

And then there were 2! Sweet little Nizmo left us last Saturday and flew (with his Mum) to Dunedin and then drove to his new home in Alexandra. Nizmo was the softest of the litter, and far more gentle than the rest of his heathen brothers. He is now living his best life with his half sister Ezka who fell instantly in love with him, and his other siblings Zip and Buzz. He is already being super helpful in the garden and has even helped Dad out at work. We miss you Buddy, but are so glad you are in your new home. X

A BIG Happy Birthday to this Legend! Felix -lover of dog crates, butt scratches and the snuffle sensation turned 12 this week. He is still eager to run and will not give up his quest to find the letterbox, but now the lad will be doing things at a more leisurely pace. This boy has 9 x 1000-mile races under his belt including a YQ Championship and has had a blast at the sprint races in NZ. Happy Birthday Snuffles, You rock! 🥳

Our house is quiet(er) today. Two pups have now left home. Henderson James flew South with his Dad last Saturday to start his new life. We are grateful to his new Parents and siblings for enabling him to live his best life. We miss the big fella, but know he is safe, having fun and incredibly loved!
