Today is National Check the Chip Day! 🐾

On this important day, we remind all companion animal guardians about the importance of microchipping your furred and feathered friends and keeping their information up to date.

The New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR) has 1.3 million animals registered and has had more than 77,000 registered in 2024 so far! 🌟 By microchipping and registering your pet with NZCAR, you significantly increase the chances of reuniting if they are ever lost.

Here are other great ways to celebrate National Check the Chip Day:

🐾 Make an appointment to get your pet microchipped.

🐾 If your pet is already microchipped, go in for a ‘check’ (scan), and verification of the microchip registration details. Once confirmed, log into your account at animalregister.co.nz to ensure your contact details are all up-to-date!

🐾 Visit your local vet to learn more about microchipping and its benefits.

Share a cute photo of your companion with a message about the importance of microchipping and keeping information current. Don’t forget to use !

We’ve got some big news – after a three-year hiatus, Cupcake Day is BACK! 🧁🤩

SPCA’s sweetest fundraiser is making a return on Wednesday 18 September, so dust off your apron and get those piping bags out! 🙌 It’s time to show off your cupcake creativity, and with your help we'll raise vital funds and awareness for animals in need.

Raise funds by hosting a morning tea with your friends, treating your canine companions to some ‘pupcakes,’ or selling your own delicious cupcakes at work, school or in the local community! Best of all, you will be making a real impact, as every dollar raised helps SPCA rehabilitate animals to give them a second chance at life ❤️

🐕 Bouncy Babies Up for Adoption! 🐕
Meet our bouncy Babies, Tigger, Kanga and Roo. These three spirited pups were dumped outside a pet store before being brought into the shelter. They were scared of us to start, but now they are all happy as can be and on the look out for their forever homes! 🏡💕
These two girls and one bouncy boy will probably be small to medium sized dogs. They have high energy levels, and will need sufficient daily exercise. They are intelligent and people-orientated, however they will still need good puppy schooling if they are to be the best dogs they can be. Ponyo here was an absolute trooper, and is the star of our ❤️

This poor girl came into our Hastings Centre after being found with terrible leg and neck wounds. Though our team weren't certain what had happened, we suspected that she was attacked by a dog or possum 😢

After receiving vet treatment, she was then taken into our Napier Centre, where she made a full (and very brave) recovery, and spent some time in foster care.

Ponyo was adopted by a kind lady who first met her at the vet clinic - she knew Ponyo was the one for her, and waited until she was healthy and ready for her forever home! 🥳

Polly has come a long way since her time as a tiny pup in our care! 🥰 This we wanted to share the lovely update we received from her family.

"Polly turned one yesterday! We went out to the dog park for a couple of hours and met up with some of her doggy friends. She's made lots of friends on our adventures, and she loves going into the water at the park."

"Thank you for giving us the best thing in our lives. We are so in love, and feel so lucky to have her unconditional love." ❤️

Although it is the middle of winter at the moment, it won’t be too long before we see the first lot of pregnant cats come through our doors with the arrival of kitten season.
Desexing saves a lot of little lives, and it’s one of the most important things we do here at SPCA in preventing cruelty ❤️ We also know desexing and microchipping is one of the key things we can all do to make a real difference for animal welfare in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Desexing not only reduces the number of vulnerable and unwanted litters in the community, it also has many health and behaviour benefits for your animal. These include lowering the risk of certain cancers, increasing an animal’s life span, and reducing unwanted behaviours such as marking, cat fights, aggression and roaming.
We offer Snip 'n' Chip and other discounted desexing vouchers across the country at different times of the year.
