There needs to be a mind shift change in How we think about desexing our dogs.
New research from Dr Michelle Kutzler a veterinary professor, shows the great harm we are doing to their health and wellbeing. In her recent webinar in a presentation to her peers, sponsored by Virbac. Michelle discusses the findings, with references. A brief summary includes, but not limited to, Significantly increased odds of Cancers, some of those being, Lymphoma, Mastocytoma, Haemangiosarcoma, Bone. Hip Dysplasia and Cranial Cruciate Rupture( one study of Golden Retrievers found no cases of CCL in intact dogs and a 5 and 8 % occurrence in Neutered males and females.
Hypothyroidism. Obesity (leading to many other conditions)
Autoimmune Disorders. Aggression, Fear and Anxiety. Urinary Incontinence.
Unknown to many people it is illegal in many European counties to desex their dogs, due to the health risks associated to it. they do NOT have a large unwanted animal problem, they have very responsible owners.
Michelle is trying to get this new information out into the veterinary community and pet owners, so we can stop routinely desexing. Now there is evidence of the Harm, the Maiming needs to stop ( the use of the word Maiming was used in a in interview with Dr LiseHansen, on Rawpetmedics, discussing this topic)
We need to accept our dogs for what they are, and not think we need to remove something from them, to make them clean and behave in a way convenient for us. For one moment imagine what would happen to your children if they were removed of their go**ds?
For me, yes I have some desexed dogs and some not .. but will never neuter another dog without medical need. Now that I know better, I will do better.. Next rant will be on the inappropriate food fed to our Dogs and Cats!
