UPDATE:

There is a confirmed case of Strangles in Southland. The confirmed case is on a single property, the case is contained and quarantine measures are in place.

The risk of a large outbreak at this stage still appears to be low, however we urge owners and trainers to remain vigilant.

The New Zealand Equine Health Association have a comprehensive overview of the disease for those who are unfamiliar with Strangles: www.nzeha.org.nz/strangles

If you have any concerns please contact our Invercargill Clinic on 03 217 6688.
_________________________

We've received some concerned calls from clients over the past few days regarding the case of Strangles in Canterbury. We understand that a single case of Strangles was reported in North Canterbury in a horse transported from the North Island. The case was isolated and no other horses are reported to have become ill. The risk of a large outbreak appears to be low at this stage.

Strangles is primarily an upper respiratory disease of horses that can cause the following clinical signs:
👉 Increased temperature above 38.5°C.
👉 Thick yellow or green nasal discharge.
👉 Dull demeanour and reduced appetite.
👉 Swelling and abscesses around the lymph nodes of the head and neck.
👉 Difficulty eating and swallowing along with increased respiratory noise due to this swelling.

We recommend that all horses that mingle with others at competitions, treks or other events – and particularly those that travel frequently or travel out of the Southland area – are vaccinated for Strangles, in line with the NZEHA Vaccination Guidelines. The vaccination programme consists of three doses of the vaccine administered at 2-week intervals. Horses then require a 6-monthly or annual booster. The vaccine can prevent illness in some horses or reduce the severity of illness in others. The Strangles vaccination can be administered in combination with your horse's Tetanus vaccination.

Biosecurity, both when introducing a new horse onto a property or when out and about at competitions, is also very important in reducing the risk of all contagious diseases, including Strangles.

Please contact our Invercargill clinic on 03 217 6688 if you would like to discuss the vaccination status of your horses and one of our vets will be happy to talk with you regarding your individual circumstances.
