This page highlights several families of Jersey cows who have proven to be most efficient in an AMS/Robotic milking system (free traffic, pasture system and now wintering in a barn).

I was asked the other day, how long a lactation some of my cows can do? Most of them would do 305 days or a little more.

But I just happened to see this girl did 10,262 litres in 688 days as a heifer.
Profitable, but not really ideal.

Southern Star Farms started milking with Lely milking robots in 2013. Run by Jo Crack, she is opening the farm gate to the public on the 25th of June. Registration is required.

And here’s Malva again this year. She just happened to come up on my memories from last year.

I posted a very similar pic of her - she did 756kg ms last season and so far this season she’s done 742kg ms - her calving date has come forward 3 weeks so she won’t make last years’ production.

In calf to Got Maid and due on 5 Aug.

The girls were pretty happy to be off the wet paddocks again today. Yesterday they didn’t have to be told twice to get in the barn … in fact when it was teeming down they ran from the robot shed, out into the rain and straight into the barn.

She seems pretty relaxed about being the only girl in the 400 cow barn!

Cathia, last milking of the season, after 325 DIM - photo taken just before I dried her off.

She’s a pretty special heifer out of Trim Cath.

She did just over 600kgMS for the season - expected more but she was struck down by a mystery illness back in July and plummetted from 30 litres a day to 15.
She did pick up after that but didn’t get back over 23litres a day.

In calf to Chocochip, due Feb 10.

Another girl starting to emerge…

More layers. Some semblance of a face appearing.
Dark colour is burnt sienna and ultramarine blue mixed.
Yellow is gold ochre. (A random tube I had).

All just free hand.... and standing back to view from a distance. Plus coffee stops!

Very nice jersey painting… could be a bit biased as the models just happen to be Robo Jersey inhabitants.

This gal is Robo Bell Floss - by Bellman out of Flossy, who is a David cow from a good old cow who came from Gerald and Annette Gunther.

What a mission! First attempt at a jersey cow.
Created with palette knife and oil paint on 600x600mm plywood. A few smoothing brushstrokes at the end to take some texture out.

Calving is over for the season so now it’s time to turn some attention to the sheep - as it turns out they don’t need shepherding and are perfectly able to look after themselves.
This Enfield ewe has a very nice set of twins by the Kaahu White ram.
Here’s a close up of the hair on one of the lambs.

The last heifer calved today.
Have always thought I should make a short video of the first milking of a heifer - of course, not every heifer is as well behaved as this 3 generation homebred girl.
Wasn’t much milk on her, but her heifer calf was chocka!

Calving is nearly over, just one girl to go.
Due on 28 Aug to a Belgium Blue sire, so really hope she get’s on with it.

Not the most ceremonious arrival for this little guy, hauled out backwards this afternoon!

But Dude the dairy cat is pretty welcoming to the little Sturgis x Clara bull calf - pity he’s not a heifer.

Funny angle I guess, as the calf is a good size, having said that Dude has not missed too many meals and is a big cat these days.

Adding sawdust…

Great to see the muck spreader back on the job - does a great job of evenly adding sawdust into the compost barn.

Poor fellow is not sure how he managed to get in amongst these guys.

First milking

The last heifer calved today. Have always thought I should make a short video of the first milking of a heifer - of course, not every heifer is as well behaved as this 3 generation homebred girl. Wasn’t much milk on her, but her heifer calf was chocka!

And this is one of the reasons the girls like the barn so much - it is composting nicely and is pretty comfy for resting on.

The girls were all inside tonight, in-milk cows on one side and heifers (and a few dried off girls) on the other. There’s no doubt they love the barn.

The barn was just too tempting - the girls went through a temporary fence and decided it was time to check it out. Needless to say they think it is wonderful.

Here’s a short clip of the yearling Jersey bulls - video taken about 3 weeks before they headed off.

The girls are just about bomb proof now - a far cry from the terror the bobcat used to cause (and that was when it wasn’t moving).

Annabelle captured this a couple of days ago - it’s like a competition to see who’s got the longest tongue. Folly Sue (the first cow in the video), looks like she’s the winner. I’ve seen her practising this in the past. The second cow BT Blonde obviously needs to practise a bit more if she’s going to be real competition for Folly Sue!

Annabelle thought she’d get a nice selfie video with one of her favourites - Robo Mav Arely - needless to say she got more than she bargained for!

So while Robo FVJ Cache (the bull) has itchy chops, Dude knows no fear and is happy to wander about anywhere!

The new Schurr cow brush finally arrived. This old girl, whose due to be dried off any day now was first to try it out. She hogged it for a good 20min before any of the other girls were allowed near. She’s 12 years old and while not a Jersey, she’s pretty special. She will have milked 8000 litres by the time she is dried off, a bit down on other years but age is catching up with her. Doesn’t matter though - every cow here knows that she is the Boss!
