Spring Mastitis amongst Vet4Farm Mastatest users:

The peak of clinical mastitis has nearly passed and now is a great time to review what that picture looked like for Southland farms.
Of interest were the no bacteria detected cases – grey and the E.coli – yellow – both potential cases (providing the cow is well) that do not receive antibiotics, only NSAIDS to help with swelling and inflammation. Within our clinic that was a whopping 20% of potential cows left untreated!
We are about to head into herd test season and these same users will be able to culture their own HiSCC cows with the Mastatest system or you can bring those milk samples into the clinic for testing – call our clinic to book.
If you would like your own Mastatest lapbox in shed please call the clinic to discuss the suitability for your farm.

Well worth watching if you're farming in the South.

Due to the dry conditions we had here in Southland earlier this year and indications we could be heading the same way this summer, we have asked Georgina Griffiths from MetService New Zealand to update us with a long-range forecast for the next few months.

Vet4Farm is looking for a part-time dairy cow veterinary nutritionist to join the team. You MUST have a current NZ Veterinary Council registration to apply for this role.
Preference is for someone who already has expertise in this field, however we are open to talking to vets who are keen to train on the job also.

Ok, level 4 lockdown again from 11.59pm tonight for at least 3 days. What does that mean for us?... not a lot. As an essential business we will be conducting most of our business as usual with some key changes:
1. We won't be accepting customers to our premises, we will be delivering daily so please phone or text your orders to us.
2. We will still be completing most on farm jobs but will not be able to have personal contact with our customers, so please advise us the location of your animal(s) and what service you require completed with them. We will contact you if we have any concerns and let you know when finished.
Keep safe and give us a call if you have any questions!

This is what a typical spring workload looks like for us. Most of the time 1-2 farm calls per day. These range from prolapses and calvings to down cows and scouring calves. Sometimes farmers choose to call at almost the same time. When this happens we triage the calls, so you can expect to need to answer a few questions:

1. What is the nature of your call (prolapse/calving...)?
2. If it is a calving then is the calf alive or dead?
3. If it is dead then is it rotten?
4. Where is the animal? (shed/paddock)

Knowing the answers to these questions allows us to prioritise the urgency of each patient.

We know that bottle broach duration can be an issue at dairy farm audits. AgriHealth now have New Zealand’s only two cattle pain relief products which have an approved 90 day in-use shelf life.

Hi all 🐄

Just a friendly reminder how important it is to add magnesium to your herds drinking water at this time of year.

Magnesium chloride and Magnesium sulphate are both readily soluble in water which make them a good and easy option for maintaining adequate blood magnesium levels in your herd.

Cattle have no readily available pool of magnesium in their body, so a decrease in magnesium content of the diet, or increased need of magnesium for milk production can cause blood magnesium levels to fall quickly.
This often results in a case of Grass Staggers (hypomagnesemia), this condition can jeopardise an affected cows milk production for the rest of the season, or in worst case cause death.
Sub-clinical magnesium issues may also affect milk production.

Contact the friendly team at Vet4Farm for more information on preventing and treating magnesium deficiency in your cattle.

Have a great Easter!

Did you know we offer Mastatest Milk Sample testing in clinic?

So simple! 🐮🥛

- First clean the infected teat using a teat wipe, or a 70% alcohol solution.
- Next, express 20-30ml of milk into a clean container. Be careful not to touch the end of the teat while expressing as this may introduce bacteria into the sample which can affect the results.
- Label the container with the cow number, date collected and which quarter that it was collected from.
- Lastly, drop this fresh sample off to one of the friendly team at Vet4Farm.
We will then run the sample through our testing machine and have results back to you within 24 hours. These results will tell you which bacteria is present in the milk sample and which drug is best suited to treat the infection.

We have individual sample containers or packs of 20 available to purchase in store.

Our in-clinic service can only be used for fresh/refrigerated milk samples that have not been frozen, as the defrosting process can affect results. We are happy to take frozen samples too, however they will have to be sent out of clinic for diagnosis.
