The Red Jasper saddle group is a proud supporter of the Hero programme which retrains race horses for second careers as riding horses. Before horses are accepted into the program they have to pass soundness and temperament tests and by graduation they're standing quietly at a mounting block, with smooth walk-trot-canter transitions to take to their new homes and new lifes. We've met Harold and can confirm he's an awesome big boy, just perfect for someone out there ... is it you?

With an active toddler and a long waiting list of Hero horses, I’m looking for a working student over winter. 🙈

Riding position only, all care is provided. This is to help with already started Hero horses, taking photos of me schooling and putting in extra ridden miles under professional guidance and supervision.🏇

Fantastic opportunity for a confident rider looking to branch out into young horse education.❤️

Must be able to commit to at least 1 hour 3-4 x a week.

Balance Equestrian has a long tradition of supporting Hero Horse programme we're proud to continue in the ultimate equestrian win-win. The Red Jasper riding group meets weekly (think social pony club without the age limit) in the convenience of our riding paddock and our coaching fees go directly into a HERO HORSE jar to support Monique Koch. We're all excited this week to welcome Millie, our first HERO resident, and will be watching as she takes her first steps.

Want an inside peak into a Hero horse’s education? Follow HRNZ HERO Educator Monique and Hero horse Millie over the next 8 weeks on her journey from “Track to Hack”!🐎

Once per week, principals of training session while watching Monique work. $5 per session towards Millie’s care and grazing.♥️

Send us a pm registering your interest - no date set yet. Millie will be given a week to settle in before starting the programme 🥰

Very limited spaces this time around but will be opened to a wider group in the future.

We have an Environment Southland concession to ride, with appropriate safety procedures and access conditions, on part of the Waihopai River Flood plain. One of those conditions is that horses be appropriately trained to calmly cope with all the variety of users that a public space may expose them to. After working in-house with Balance Equestrian on those skills today we headed out early and took our own hazards .. a crying baby, an excitable dog, a less excitable dog ... And passed with flying colours. (Whinny teamed her Australian-style stock saddle with a custom Pure Pony Paracord halter for maximum comfort and control, while Amanda wears a positively affirmative hi-vis unicorn)

Loving the sight of Agsouth Farmlet Lifestyle Block Services hay mower in the morning mist. Because good horse hay is hard to find we've chosen to make our own. Good food begins from the ground-up. We're lucky to have taken over a property that's been well managed by Balance Equestrian and we're keen to follow that model, looking after a mixture of forage grasses perfect for our horse boarders. Thanks to the teams at FertNZ and Hills Laboratory we've got detailed soil and plant analysis that says, yep, this is grass worth baling.

What a spectacular weekend! It was wonderful to see the huge gains in both green horses and their riders during last weekend's clinic with the Hero trainers Monique (Balance Equestrian) & Hannah and get a sneak peak into Max's progress.
