Puppies... lovable and cute - but hard work! ๐พ
Here are our top tips for surviving and thriving through the puppy stage:
๐ถ Supervise your puppy constantly during awake periods.
๐ถ Puppies need lots of sleep! 18-20 hours a day!
๐ถ Set your routines and boundaries immediately.
๐ถ Teach one thing at a time, eg sit, stay, drop, come.
๐ถ Lots of positivity! Reward good behaviour and interactions.
๐ถ Don't punish your puppy, ignore and reward the correct behaviour instead.
๐ถ Be super patient and keep sessions short at first.
๐ถ Potty training must be consistent - give your puppy every chance to succeed by taking them outside regularly, using lots of praise and a high value reward.
๐ถ Get on top of potentially bad behaviours now eg biting, pulling on lead, jumping up.
Don't be discouraged, and stay consistent!

Meisha ๐๐พ
Just the sweetest girl! She stayed with us to be desexed. Meisha was perfectly behaved and everyone fell in love with her ๐
Fluff + cuddles = the best equation ever ๐
Here are some things to know if you want a Golden Retriever! ๐
โช They are a large, sturdy and athletic breed. ๐ช
โช They were developed in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s. ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ
โช They are patient, kind and loving. Generally quiet. Very intelligent. ๐ฅฐ
โช A great family dog, they have moderate exercise needs and need regular grooming. โ๏ธ They are good with kids and love people!
โช They are prone to hip and elbow problems, sensitive stomachs and skin, and hereditary eye disorders. ๐
โช It is important to research your breeder, and buy dogs who have been genetically tested, and have had elbow and hip scoring. ๐ถ
Letting your pup follow their nose is a key element to their wellness and happiness! Dogs can experience great frustration when they aren't allowed to sniff. ๐
A โsniffariโ is an outing where your dog sniffs whatever they want to and leads you to wherever they want to go. Itโs different from taking your dog for a walk, as the point of the sniffari is to allow your dog to explore the world by way of their nose! ๐ถ
These outings provide great mental stimulation and information, and can actually tire your dog out just as much as a big walk would ๐พ (albeit sometimes briefly!)

A lot of you will know about our nurse Fionaโs wee girl Rose. ๐น
In April 2020 Fee and her family had to say goodbye to their boxer Tess (7 years young) who had a brain tumour. In October 2020 Fees sister sent her a photo of a staffy x (knowing that staffys are a favourite of hers) that was needing a home at the Canterbury SPCA. There was no going back. Rose was coming to stay ๐
You would think that a staffy x would be a very hardy dog but by November 2021 she was at Animal Orthopaedics having orthopaedic surgery on her right hind leg. Fee had so much support (monetary and emotional) at this stage and she was blown away about how many caring people there were. She will always be appreciative and hopes she can reciprocate when it is needed. ๐
Roses leg only really bothers her now when she overdoes it. There was the possibility that her left leg would also need the same surgery but so far so good.
Now a days she loves going out for walks with Fee and their other dog Flame (a border collie x). You will always find the terrible two together. ๐
She loves water, eating and will follow the sun around until she is puffing so much she needs to move. The end of the day is a favourite time of day as this is โcuddle timeโ. It is the time where Fee has to sit on the sofa so Rose can cuddle and have a blanket put over her. Flame is always close by as well. ๐ฅฐ

๐พ If your cat is going to the toilet anywhere BUT the litter tray, here is what your cat may be trying to tell you:
โช๏ธ They are having health issues, such as arthritis or a urine infection.
โช๏ธ They are stressed.
โช๏ธ They don't like the litter being used in the tray, or the location of the tray.
โช๏ธ They are fearful.
โช๏ธ They are feeling territorial.
โช๏ธ There aren't enough litter trays in the house for the amount of cats.
โช๏ธ They are not used to using a litter tray.
โช๏ธ The litter tray is too small for them.
๐พThe first step is to work out whether there is a health issue, by booking a check up with your cats vet.
๐พOnce health issues have been ruled out, we can modify the environment, litter trays and provide calming support to your cat in the form of supplements, pheromones, diet modifications and medication if needed.
๐ฑOur experienced team are here for a chat anytime about any concerns you have with your feline friends!

A day to remind us our kitty's need preventative health care and check ups too! ๐พ
Cats are masters of disguise and often hide they are unwell until they are really sick ๐ฟ
A visit for your cat will look like:
๐พ A physical exam, where we do things like listen to their heart and lungs, check their teeth, check for any lumps and bumps, check their joints and check their hydration.
๐พ Updating of vaccines and application of flea and worm treatments if needed.
๐พ Depending on your kitty's age, physical status and findings on exam, your vet may recommend screening bloodwork, a dental procedure, x-rays or other diagnostics.
Our goal is to be the voice for your animals - their health and happiness are what we care about ๐พ๐

Blocked bladders are a medical emergency!
If your cat is showing signs of a blockage, they may:
๐พ Strain in the litter tray, but produce no urine. They may appear constipated.
๐พ Lick their rear end.
๐พ Small amount of urine may be produced which may be bloody.
๐พ Appear lethargic and unwell. Can progress to being unresponsive if left.
Call us immediately if you see any of these signs in your cat. Don't hesitate.
Male cats are especially at risk!
They require immediate unblocking and medical treatment by the veterinarian.
Life-threatening consequences can occur in as little as 12-24 hours of being unable to urinate. Death from untreated obstruction may occur in as little as 36-48 hours.

Head nurse Sarah had this to say about her beloved horse Jack, a stationbred (a tough, hardy breed perfect for the farm).
"Jack has been with me for 4 years. He's 17 years old. He was previously used by the Master of the Hounds to look after the pack of hounds on the hunt field. Now his days consist of hacking the farm, hanging with his shetland bestie Pavie and being super nosey! Jack is a master of telling the time, he always knows what time he should be fed! He has been known to whinny out if I am late to feed him.
Some of his dislikes are when Pavie tries to steal his tea and being cold. He is a bit of a princess!! Jack's fave food is apples and carrots. He lives in a herd of three, and he is the boss! Jack is a happy boy and loves life." ๐ด
Beautiful Bob ๐
Bob happily modelled for the pup-arazzi at the clinic ๐พ
Some of our wonderful clients may remember the effervescent Bridie, our now retired vet nurse. ๐
Her lovely Izzy came in for her monthly beransa injection. At 15 years old Izzy is doing amazing despite her health challenges. ๐พ
As you can see Izzy is much loved and adored. ๐

**Warning blood and removing foreign body** Poppy had a very sore foot and upon inspection we found this huge splinter in there! Poor girl! She will feel much better without that in her paw pad. Excellent work by Dr Donna and the team and a good outcome for Poppy ๐พ๐
The colder months bring with them some dangers for our pets ๐ ๐ฅถ Frozen roads and footpaths can be a slipping hazard (especially for our older pets). And be aware of lakes/rivers that have frozen over! โ Antifreeze is dangerous to our pets if ingested. It can be fatal. Clean up any spills immediately and keep out of reach of your pets. Check regularly that your car isn't leaking. Get your pet to the closest vet ASAP if you suspect ingestion. ๐ฟ Cats like to take up residence inside car wheel arches and engines seeking warmth. Bang on your bonnet or slam a door to hopefully scare off any hiding kitties! ๐พ Check your doggies paws regularly for cracks and splits. โ๏ธ Cold weather can exacerbate existing health conditions such as arthritis. Your pet may require more TLC during the colder months. ๐ฐ Our outside pets need to be kept in a water and wind proof hutch if they are outside, with plenty of warm bedding and food!
โญIts World Veterinary Day!โญ A shout out to the Veterinary professionals of our world, who are so hard working, dedicated and passionate. One of our clients has sent this video of her cat Casper who likes to chat with the birds during the late afternoon/ evening. He never chases birds or tries to catch and eat themโฆ he just appears to want to be their friends. And thatโs not working out well for him ๐คฃ Has anyone else got cat who does this ???
We loved receiving this message from Coco's mum. "Thought I'd send a wee video of Coco playing with Dakota. She is doing so well, thanks again to you all". Nothing like seeing a Boxer bounce back !!
Murray and Barb took their dog Meg to meet up with her litter mates in Hanmer Springs recently. Six of the nine, who are now 15 months old, could make it and had a fun day out. Meg is such a wonderful girl with a great intelligence and temperament. Here's five of them enjoying the water at Dogstream Reserve.
Remember the baby pug Millie, well she's now ten months old. She has a new friend called Pepper, a rescue kitty, three months old. They are the best of buddies ###x
Murray and Barbara Pringle are full of great ideas when it comes to having a staff get together. "Lets all take our dogs to the beach, then have a coffee before we head home to the Pringles for Pizza". Nothing like a bit of excitement especially for Marloes's dog Frankie who found a stick, not just any stick. Watch this , here she comes !!!!
