🐾Reasons for use of chill protocol – A Pet Can’t be Healthy if it isn’t Happy!🐾

The Chill protocol is a recognised veterinary-industry wide tool necessary in providing a fear free experience for all patients that exhibit body language and signs of Fear, Stress and Anxiety (FAS) starting from leaving the home all the way through their hospital visit.
Recognising your pet is fearful or stressed is a serious problem and should be treated as such. Fear and stress disrupts the bodies normal state of functioning and causes physiological effects that slow healing and promote more fear in the future.

The effect of fear and anxiety of the pet in clinic can often cause:
• the pet to become distressed when handled or examined
• leads to incomplete examinations and skipped tests,
• a need for higher doses of sedatives and anaesthetics which puts the pet at increased risk,
• team members at risk of injury
• an upset owner

At Marshall and Pringle we do our very best to avoid signs of FAS in your pet and provide them with a comfortable experience. These include:
• gentle control methods
• a considerate approach to your pet when handling them
• pheromone sprays,
• calm environment
• entrance through the side or back doors to avoid other pet conflict
• appointment scheduling to avoid busy periods and pet interactions
• a cat specific waiting area with towels for their carriers
• encourage items of comfort from home to travel with your pet
• lots of treats!

Despite these measures sometimes our pets need medical intervention to reduce their fear and anxiety. The Chill Protocol is an anti-anxiety drug management system that allows us to perform our role effectively and safely and most importantly avoid causing any unnecessary stress to your pet whilst we attend to their individual care and health needs to a high standard.
Please contact the clinic should you have any concerns about your pet’s behaviour or anxiety getting them to the clinic or whilst they are visiting us. Our trained staff will do their best to set up an individual plan to help and support you.

When walking your dog this summer, check the temperature is safe for their paws!

You can do this by placing the back of your hand on the surface for 7 seconds - if its too hot for your hand, its too hot for their paws! 🐾

Perhaps one of the lesser known parasites is Cheyletiella, given the name "Walking Dandruff" as it appears as though your pets dander is moving through their coat.

🐾c.yasguri affects dogs, whilst c.blakei affects cats.
🐾The entire life cycle of cheyletiella occurs on the host (your pet).
🐾Dogs show signs of infection in the form of pruritus, scaliness and eczema type lesions. Cats are less likely to show clinical signs.
🐾Cheyletiella transmits readily to people.

🌟The good news is that if you have been treating your pet with topical flea, mite and tick prevention then your pet is also protected against Cheyletiella!

Year round flea, mite and tick prevention is essential healthcare 🌟
