‘Twisted Gut’ (GDV) in Dogs 🐕

With GDV, prompt treatment is CRUCIAL for your dog’s survival- Do you know what to look for?
Gastric dilation volvulus (GDV), also know as ‘twisted gut’, is one of the most important reasons that proven, hard working dogs are lost from your team.
For a long time now, it is more common in deep chested, large breed dogs. 🐕
Some predisposing factors leading to the condition can include:
• Being underweight
• Eating food very quickly (swallowing air)
• Being fed one large volume meal a day
• Being stressed from a high workload, low quality of nutrition, poor housing, and tense dog team dynamics.
With some local cases the above is not the leading cause of a GDV, it has been often the most experienced and valued dogs, in peak condition that develops this serious problem.
Some working dogs may have gastric motility problems that you are unaware of. There is also evidence of what appears to be a polygenic predisposition to GDV carried through some family lines.Signs to be aware of:
Initial signs are often associated with bloating and abdominal pain.
These can include, but limited to:
• An anxious look or looking around at the abdomen
• Standing and stretching, unsettled in kennel at night
• Drooling
• Dry retching, or just some foamy saliva

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT A GDV
A dog with a GDV is a major medical emergency, but fortunately if detected and treated early, survival rates can be good. Don’t delay your decision! As time passes, some areas of the stomach wall may start to die (gastric necrosis) due to the reduced blood supply to the tissues. The prognosis and survival rate for these cases drops significantly.
🚨 📞 Contact your Vet and transport your dog there ASAP

☀️Hot Weather Pet Safety Every Pet Owner Must Know ☀️

Hot weather can be uncomfortable and even dangerous for pets. Here are some hot weather pet safety tips every pet owner should know:

I. Prevention

1. Provide plenty of fresh water - Ensure your pet always has access to cool, fresh water to stay hydrated.
2. Keep your pet indoors - During the hottest part of the day (usually between 11am and 3pm), keep your pet indoors where it's cooler.
3. Use cooling pads or mats - Cooling pads or mats can help keep your pet cool.
4. Provide shade - If your pet must be outside, provide shade using a canopy, umbrella, or tree.

II. Heat-Related Illnesses

1. Recognize heatstroke symptoms: Symptoms include panting, drooling, restlessness, lethargy, and collapse.
2. Know the signs of heat exhaustion: Symptoms include heavy panting, rapid heartbeat, and vomiting.
3. Act quickly: If you suspect heatstroke or heat exhaustion, move your pet to a cooler location and provide cool water. Seek veterinary attention immediately.

III. Additional Tips

1. Avoid exercising your pet during the heat:Try to limit exercise to early morning or evening when it's cooler.
2. Watch for hot surfaces: Be aware of hot surfaces like sidewalks, asphalt, and sand, which can burn your pet's paws.
3. Don't leave your pet in a parked car: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, even if the windows are open.
4. Be aware of humidity: High humidity can make the air feel even hotter, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
5. Monitor your pet's health: Keep an eye on your pet's overall health, especially if they have pre-existing medical conditions.

By following these hot weather pet safety tips, you can help keep your furry friend safe and comfortable during the warmest months.

Is your pet itchy?

As the warmer months approach, it's the perfect time to focus on allergies in pets. If your dog is scratching excessively, it may be more than just a minor issue. While occasional itching is normal, persistent scratching can indicate an underlying medical condition, such as an infection, parasites, or skin allergies. Consult with your vet to determine the cause.

Recognizing Skin Allergies in Dogs:

Look out for these common signs:

- Excessive scratching, licking, biting, or chewing
- Frequent rolling, rubbing, or scooting
- Recurring ear problems (head shaking, discharge, or scratching)
- Hair loss
- Body odor
- Skin changes (rash, redness, greasy skin, or scabs)

If your dog's itching persists or displays any of these symptoms, don't hesitate to contact the clinic for professional advice and treatment. Early intervention can make all the difference in your pet's comfort and well-being.
