Dog Coach with Jill Dog Coach Jill provides positive dog training services privately or classes, with Bay Islands Canine I have had many roles in the dog training world.

DOG COACH JILL

My love and enthusiasm for dog training has led me to start my own business. BACKGROUND
My personal journey started as a member of a Dog training club around 2005. Many years later, having been a competitor, a trainer and a committee person, I find myself wanting to share my knowledge wider as a private trainer. These have included being a volunteer dog club instructor, a trainer f

or the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program at all levels, a Dogs NZ CGC Assessor, a volunteer in the therapy dog program that reads to children, and finally, as an Assessor for the St John Therapy Pet Dogs program. All of these roles were a result of developing my skills through courses, seminars and direct experience as a trainer of people and their dogs. I have a comprehensive background in positive, science-based dog training methods which underpins my coaching. Once I learned about the magic that is positive reinforcement (clicker) training, I wanted to spread the word to show people how to better understand and communicate with their animals and build happy relationships with their dogs. My happy place is ' doing stuff with my dog/s' In my training activities to date, I am very honored to have been part of many dog/people teams in their training journeys and successes. Now I am semi retired I had time to follow my passion, Dog Training and Coaching people in a positive way with their dogs. As proof that you can ‘teach an old dog new tricks’ - November 2022 I graduated from the Professional Dog training course, Karen Pryor Academy. So now am a KPA Certified Training Partner. Jill Northcoat, (KPA-CTP)

I am happy to discuss your needs and to progress though to working with you and your dog!

Happy Christmas to everyone. May you all enjoy the simple pleasures as much as Yogi enjoys his new toy.

I have been very busy under my Bay of Islands Canine Association hat lately. With a small team, we planned and held a dog show weekend, showing Dogs with a Championship Breed Show, Two Open Breed shows, two Rally champ shows, two Obedience Ribbon trials, and a Go Rally O.

This was achieved by a small group of members and friends; we had Secretaries, Judges, and Stewards from all over the North Island.
We gathered and held a fabulous raffle, to which many local businesses contributed prizes. Several Teams entered into the Rally O and Obedience sections were members of the Bay of Islands Canine. It was so great to see people develop their skills and passion for training. For many up here, it was their first time attending a Dogs NZ formal show.
So, I got a chance to enter the Rally O. For Jack, it was his first time competing. (Life has conspired against us getting to this point) We did OK for the first time.

I am proud to have been associated with the St John Therapy Pet program, for over five years now.
Lovely that this was recognised recently in an award ceremony in Kerikeri. So many awesome folks with many more years than I present and recognised in the many different types of St John roles. Billy and Pippa both have assisted in the reading with children program in a local schools. I have been an St John Therapy Pet Assessor for around three/four years now, supporting new Teams into this work.
Exciting that St John intends to develop this program more in the area. My role of training Teams for the Dogs NZ program of Canine Good Citizen ( under Bay of islands Canine Association) aligns very nicely for supporting new Teams into this space.

Breaking the Myth: Dogs and Dominance

There's a common misconception about our furry friends: that their social structure revolves around a leader or "alpha." This belief, rooted in outdated research on captive wolves, has long been debunked by modern science. When it comes to domesticated dogs, the reality is quite different.

Studies have shown that dogs do not operate within a strict hierarchy led by a dominant alpha. Instead, their social interactions are more fluid and cooperative. Dogs form bonds based on mutual trust and respect, not heirachy, dominance and submission.

Why does this matter?

Misunderstanding dog behavior can lead to training methods that are counterproductive and even harmful. Using dominance-based techniques can increase fear and anxiety in dogs, damaging the bond between you and your pet.

Furthermore, reliance on dominance-based hierachical methods can exacerbate separation anxiety. Dogs experiencing anxiety are often seeking security and reassurance. By misunderstanding their needs and responding with dominance-based tactics, we can inadvertently heighten their stress and anxiety, making the problem worse.

It's time to embrace a more accurate understanding of our canine companions. Training should focus on positive reinforcement, building trust, and enhancing communication. Let's leave the outdated alpha myth behind and foster a more compassionate relationship with our dogs. 🐾
