Spring has sprung! πŸ’

This stunning new season is also bringing some not so stunning allergens 🦠

Just like humans in spring and all year around, our animals can suffer from allergies too - one of the most common being contact allergies.
This can cause your pet to become itchy and develop skin rashes in areas that come in contact with the allergen(s) - most commonly seen on the paws, thighs, tummy and the base of the tail area.

Pets can develop contact allergies to a number of different things in the environment such as; grasses, pollens, weeds, fleas, ants etc.

A friendly reminder to update your pets flea treatment and keep an eye out for any signs of allergies.
Give your vet a call and book in for a skin consult if you notice any of the above symptoms.

Happy spring! 🌻

πŸ€πŸ Rats, Bait and Leptospirosis… πŸπŸ€

Now that the weather has cooled, rats and mice are trying to find shelter closer to homes/sheds.

We have seen a number of dogs lately that have eaten rat bait or have eaten rats that have likely ingested some.

If it’s not possible to use pet safe options and you need to lay bait, please double check how and where it is being laid and stored.

The effects of rat bait aren’t immediate but we can induce vomiting to minimise absorption if eaten relatively recently.

If you are unsure if your pet has eaten rat bait, look out for the following symptoms and call your vet clinic:

🌑 Lethargy
🌑 Green or blue faeces
🌑 Pale or bleeding gums
🌑 Coughing/Difficulty breathing
🌑 Blood in urine and faeces
🌑 Inappetence
🌑 Vomiting

These signs may not start to show until 2-5 days after ingesting the poison.
Note: Keep rat bait packaging, to take into your vet clinic if a visit is required.

πŸ’‰ This is also a timely reminder to ensure you consider vaccinating your dogs against leptospirosis as rats are a carrier of the disease πŸ’‰
Leptospirosis is transmissible to humans as well!
It can be contracted by coming in contact with rat urine, infected cattle urine and by frequenting waterways, as rats can and do swim.

If you’re unsure or have any questions please give your vet clinic a call ☎️

Doggie Epidemic βš οΈπŸ•

🐾 There has been a Kennel Cough outbreak in Northland - as you may have already heard.

🐾 Kennel Cough is best described as the doggie equivalent to the common cold or flu.
It is extremely contagious and can be caused by a number of different viral and/or bacterial strains.

🐾 Dogs can contract Kennel Cough by coming into direct or indirect contact with an infectious dog. This means they don’t need to be in close proximity as it can spread in the air when an infected dog coughs.

🐾 Even though the infection is called Kennel Cough, it is not only at kennels or doggie daycares that dogs can become infected, although these are much higher risk areas.

🐾 Symptoms of Kennel Cough include; a honking cough, retching or hacking, vomiting, lethargy, inappetence. If your dog has any of these symptoms please seek veterinary advise. Medication can be prescribed to help ease symptoms.

🐾 Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog. A vaccinated dog can however still contract Kennel Cough but symptoms will be less severe.

🐾 If you have any questions please give your vet clinic a call.

This beautiful girl, Misty was brought in to us a few months ago needing emergency treatment after ingesting something toxic.
After a few days of intensive care, Misty thankfully bounced back, with plenty of time to prepare for her big day as ring bearer for her beautiful mum and dad on their wedding day πŸ’
We couldn't be more happy for this beautiful wee family and absolutely LOVE getting the updates 😍
