Let's Talk Dandruff in Dogs.
There are three forms of seborrhoea: oily (oleosa), dry (sicca) and inherited. A combination of the first two types can also occur.
A change in the amount and quality of oily skin secretions (sebum) causes this condition. Excessive skin peeling and the flakes on your dog’s coat are caused by an imbalance between new and dying skin cells.
Underlying conditions such as allergies, endocrine (hormones) disorders, and dietary (big contributor) deficiencies are often the cause of seborrhoea. The endocrine system and the immune system do however work very closely together. These conditions cause an imbalance of the skin's ecosystem leading to secondary seborrhoea.
Primary (inherited) seborrhoea also exists. It affects young dogs of certain breeds including West Highland White Terriers, Dachshunds, and others. In Shar Pei's, primary seborrhea is common in the body folds.
Signs
Oily skin can be waxy or greasy. Often, dogs have a bad odour due to this excessive sebum production.
With dry seborrhoea, a lack of sebum irritates the skin, and dandruff is more frequent. Skin hyperpigmentation (a condition where the skin darkens and thickens, appearing as black spots or patches, often in areas like the armpits, groin, or legs) and hair loss are also common.
Damage of the natural protective skin barrier can also contribute to bacterial or yeast skin infections. Something we see a lot here in Northland. Your dog's skin may also be itchy, leading to excessive scratching or licking. And so, the cycle goes on and on.
If you notice any of these signs, a trip to the veterinarian is warranted as this is not just a hygiene issue! A canine nutritionist could also help. But you can't go past a dual approach.... the skin is also an extension of the inside... digestive system. So while you are working on the diet and waiting for test results for hormone or immune imbalance, you can work on regular, gentle brushing, bathing and grooming.
Environmental factors can also contribute to exacerbated scratching or licking... clean bedding, clean harnesses, short grass, watch for flare ups.
