We are having a great first season at our new farm. The cows are still producing 1.9MS/cow and we are well up on production even with a herd that is 42% heifers.
We have also had a good first scanning result today with 58% of the cows in calf in 3 weeks (industry target is 54%).
We are looking forward to the end of AB on January the 10th.

Big day today. 279 cows have been sold and are off to their new home over the river. Thanks girls for helping us pay for our new farm!

Its fair to say that we are feeling rather relieved after scanning the herd this morning. We have achieved a 12% MT rate and a 72% 6 week in-calf rate in a difficult season. This was achieved with no bulls, no camera and no protrack!
We are also amazed at the result from our heifers with only 3 out of 233 heifers MT (1%). This is a result of the great grazier we have in Waikaia with the group averaging 410kg already.
We have subsequently sold 250 of our cows and will bring in all of these good heifers to our new farm 1 June 2019.

And just like that we are all dried off for the season. The cows have marched up the hill to the run-off for winter. Thanks girls for a great season and giving us over 331,000 ms, 473kg/cow.

Its been a very busy week here. The heifers were teatsealed on Monday and tagged and painted into their calving dates on Tuesday. We had our last herd test on Wednesday and tomorrow we are drying off some skinnier cows and our carry overs that we have sold.

Things are looking great here at the moment. The cows are still milking well and we are well up in production. Mating has gone well with an increase of 1% in the 6-week rate to 72% and a 4% decrease in empty rate to 12%. Looking forward to drying off.

With the end of calving in sight, a couple new to sharemilking are enjoying their first season in the Waitaki Valley.
