🎆Fireworks are to most people a time of celebration, but to horses and their owners’ firework displays can be a stressful and worrying time. Here are some steps you can use to minimize or reduce the effect the fireworks will have on them.
1. Know the date, time and location of the firework display.
2. Don’t change your horse’s routine; this can heighten stress for them too. They feel safe and secure in a familiar environment
3. If you plan on stabling them, begin this process a week before the display so it is familiar to them.
4. If you plan on keeping your horse in the paddock, ensure all fencing is secure and there are no objects lying around that they could injure themselves on.
5. Remain calm. As an owner a shift in your mood/stress levels will have a direct impact on your horse.
6. Use distractions to keep them occupied; plenty of hay, some of their favourite treats, play a radio.
7. If you know your horse may be on edge or they have had a previous negative experience, talk to your local veterinarian beforehand to form a plan. There are oral sedatives available for horses or you may have to consider moving them for the night.
8. Be aware of your own safety, interacting with a spooked horse can be dangerous to both horse and handler.
Implementing these steps can help make the Guy Faulkes celebrations as stress-free as possible for both you and your horse.

🎆 Firework night is rapidly approaching and although it is exciting for us, the loud bangs and bright lights can be really frightening for your pets. 😿

Thankfully we have some top tips to help prepare, which will hopefully make the evening as stress free as possible. 🧨

· If possible, stay at home to reassure your pet
· Keep animals indoors (lock the cat flap)
· Walk dogs early before any fireworks start
· Close windows, doors and curtains to soundproof your home and shut out bright flashes
· Turn on the radio or TV to help drown out the loud noises
· A few days to a week before, create a safe & comforting hiding place for pets with their favorite treats and bedding. Get them used to going into it as a relaxing space on nights where there are no fireworks so they already feel safe there when the bangs start.
· Try a compression wrap for dogs e.g. a thunder shirt.
· Utilise a calming pheromone diffuser e.g. Feliway or Adaptil.
· Try ‘Calmex’ calming tablets for dogs.
· Make sure your pets are microchipped with up to date contact details. This means it is easier to reunite you with your pet if they are startled and escape.

🎇 If you would like further information on any of the above, please get in contact with your local clinic to discuss. Some of the suggestions need to be put in place in advance for best effect so if you know your pet is badly affected, lets make a plan to give them as stress free a night as possible.😸

💧WATER PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR PETS💧

Did you know two Vetlife clinics have Hydrotherapy pools for your pets?!

Hydrotherapy reduces pressure on delicate joints so pets can slowly rebuild their strength and stamina at a pace to suit them. Our highly trained team of vet nurses take time to introduce pets to the pool so they feel safe and secure. Our state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pools have a built-in walking belt with adjustable speed and the water level can be adjusted to suit any sized pet. Perfect for either cats or dogs recovering from an injury or learning to live with age-related issues such as arthritis. We currently have pools at Vetlife Timaru and Vetlife Wanaka.

⭐ Meet Radah, Vetlife Wanaka Star Student of the week!⭐

Radah story below:
We recently had the pleasure of meeting Radah and her owner Eric who was down from the North Island to visit his daughter. Radah unfortunately had a bad accident where she fell from the first storey of a building site and landed on a metal object fracturing her spine. She had emergency surgery at VSA to stabilize the injury but she lost the use of her hind legs. She has since learnt how to spinal walk which is where the legs move by way of the reflexes and she can get around small distances this way. Her wheelchair supports her during the day so she can get around more easily and go for walks at the beach-her favourite place.

Radah had acupuncture treatments with our Vet Beth Campbell to try to stimulate the nerve function to her legs and improve wellbeing.

We also opted to try Radah in our under water treadmill, as hydrotherapy can help spinal dogs regain some function to their limbs. Since she was only in Wanaka for a short time we managed 2 sessions. We had the water at a level that supported her but so she could have her feet on the belt. I manually walked her back legs for her and we kept the reps short at 30 seconds. She tired quite easily but enjoyed her time in the warm water.

Keep up the amazing work Vetlife Wanaka!

🐾 Did you know that enrolling your puppy in pre-school can set the foundation for a well-adjusted adult dog?

Puppy pre-school offers critical socialisation, helping your furry friend interact positively with other dogs and people.

Structured training sessions cultivate essential obedience skills, making them easier to manage at home and in public.

Moreover, early development fosters confidence, reducing the likelihood of behavioral issues later on.
