"Please Just Ignore Them"

This is a phrase commonly used by dog owners, trying desperately to get their dogs to behave! It's widely accepted by others too, but what does it actually mean? When asking people to ignore your dog the other person often hears 'Ignore their behaviour' not 'Ignore the dog itself'.

I often ask clients to ignore their own dogs at certain times during consultations, and I routinely do this when I arrive. This results in comments like 'They're really different around you" or "They aren't jumping on you like they normally do" or even "Wow they aren't usually this calm around visitors". You have to ask why this is the case, and what do I do differently.

Much of any dog's behaviour (particularly at the key time of greeting new people) is about gaining attention. They want your attention because firstly, it can be their way of gaining acceptance (in the case of nervous dogs), or it can be their way to gain status (when they often use learned behaviour such as jumping up). If they can get what they want when they ask for it, their status in their own mind is confirmed. Ignoring them shows them that this behaviour no longer works, and they need to rethink their strategies. So what does 'Please ignore my dog' actually mean?

It means don't touch them, don't speak to them or verbally react, and above all else don't make eye contact (you can look at the dog but don't meet their eyes). You will put a dog at ease if you practice this, with every dog you meet, every time you meet them (including your own).

Then once they are doing something appropriate (settled, calm, playing on their own etc) recall them back to you (never go to them) for all the praise, love and attention in the world.

I don't usually work during weekends but I made an exception today. I was invited to be the guest 'expert' at a local Air B&B group of hosts that may consider, our already are, opening their properties to our pets. We had some great charts, great coffee, and a lovely afternoon at Scoundrel . Thanks Angela Cossey for the invitation!

Controversial topic ahead ....

Dogs as children, or referring to dogs as children or 'fur-kids'.

I'm relaxing on a Saturday waiting for the clock to tell me to get moving, and scrolling good ol' FB. Another dog trainers page appears on my feed so I start reading the comments only to be disturbed by the multiple references to dogs being children by followers of the page. One person referred to her child being previously abandoned 4 times. I had to re-read this to see she was meaning her dog. While abandonment is sad and definitely not acceptable, I also worry for the dog as it is now in a home where it now has a job - the child. Sadly, my experience is that these dogs develop behaviors that they didn't previously have, and owners fail to allow them to be a dog - the most cathartic state they can have. So do your dog a favor and allow them to be a dog. After all, isn't that what you actually wanted in the first place.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK
This post is prompted by a phone call several days ago following a fight between two dogs. One a middle-aged adult, the other a puppy. I was requested to go and 'sort it out', which I refused to do. Had the owners not been there to break up the fight, the older dog would have been killed by their puppy. Yet the owner didn't initially believe that the puppy was aggressive, as it was loving towards its family, but was becoming increasingly pushy towards the adult. My questions ate why keep a dog that you will never trust again? Why buy a dog (in this case pure bred and papered) that is going to be heavier than you, with aggressive tendencies, and most importantly, why subject your loved family pet to living with a dog that could kill it at any stage? The result of this whole situation is a dog with horrific physical, not to mention psychological injuries, a puppy being sent back to the breeder which will possibly be rehomed again, a massive vet bill, and a distraught owner. No one wins. Do your homework, and get help before ending up in this situation.

PARVO VIRUS

This nasty condition is doing the rounds in Christchurch again. Please make sure your dogs are up to date with their vaccinations. I know vaccinations seem expensive, but trust me when I say that the vet bill from Parvo treatment is worse, if your dog even survives. Parvo virus can live for several years in soil, so it is literally everywhere, and dogs that have recovered from Parvo shed the virus for about 3 months afterwards. So this is one of the nastiest things your dog can catch.

PLEASE VACCINATE YOUR DOGS

Ok this is a post that has come purely from frustration that has been building up recently. I'm a member of a few local community pages, not because I live there, but because there are frequently posts about dog training on them. However, as we approach the holiday season, there is an increasing number of posts looking for boarding kennels, house sitters or people to look after their dogs while others go away. IMO this is totally irresponsible. I understand that plans change, or opportunities arise at the last minute, however when you have a dog, or any other pet in your home, it is your responsibility to put them first. If you don't have a kennel booked by Easter in Canterbury, then you will likely miss out. If you are dreaming about space or sitters in December then you owe it to your dog to change your plans to include them. Come on people, a dog isn't a convenience to have around when it suits. They're part of your family and you should be making plans for them too way earlier. Or stay home and be a responsible owner. Rant over.

FIREWORKS ON SALE FROM TODAY
Please keep all animals locked inside tonight and for the next few days from dark. Animals can bolt in fright and scale walls and fences that would normally keep them in. Turn up your stereo or TV, keep your curtains closed, and if you must take your dog out to toilet take them on the lead. DO NOT WALK YOUR DOG AT NIGHT until firework season is over. While they're inside allow them to hide and leave them alone until they come out of their own free will, allow them to sleep in your room, and keep your routine normal. Do not become stressed yourself as this will only add to their worries. If your dogs reaction is severe, talk to your vet immediately about short term medication.

UPDATE ....
So a week ago I asked for some help rehoming a lovely little puppy who was in need of a new home due to no fault of her own. Well!! One week later she is settling beautifully in her new home. Her owners say that she is so beautifully behaved, an easy pup, and they are so completely in love with her. 😍 I couldn't have asked for a more ideal family to step up for this wee dog, with a perfect outcome for all involved.

A day with a difference today when I got to spend the morning at Ara Te Pūkenga Animal Science with the Level 4 Animal Management students talking to them about dog training, and bringing a little bit of reality introducing Polly to a classroom of people. All the students were really engaged with me and Polly, and my little girl's behavior was impeccable!! She got rewarded with lots of attention and lunch in Merivale afterwards. I've never taken her into town like this, let alone in a classroom or on a lift! She took it all in her stride. 🐾🐾

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Did you know that Petiquette Animal Behaviour operates in a sector of business that is completely unregulated in NZ? That means that any person or entity can set themselves up as a 'dog trainer' or 'behaviourist' without any qualification, and without recourse to any professional body for clients that become involved with them. Claims that employees are 'certified' is meaningless without stating what those qualifications are, and where they were gained. There is an element of 'buyer beware' in this, but in my humble opinion too many people shop for help with their dog based on the price that they will be charged, not the knowledge of the person you choose to become involved. The wrong training at the wrong time can be disastrous to your dog, and very damaging to a young pup, and I spend many hours with clients undoing exactly this situation.

So question the person you choose to become involved with your dog and your family. Ask the same questions you would ask someone coming to home tutor a child in your care. Are they qualified? Where were those qualifications gained? How long have they been in the game? Are there references you can obtain about them? What recourse do you have if you are unhappy?

For the record I hold a Master of Science degree from Canterbury University, a National Certificate in Animal Training from Christchurch Polytech, a National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing from Otago Polytech, and a Dog Listener qualification through a private company in the UK. I've been working with dogs for over 20 years now and have previously been employed by a welfare organisation and veterinary clinics. I am an open book and happy to discuss my qualifications, experience, and methodology with anyone who asks.

'GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN'

Do you find yourself repeating this multiple times daily and get frustrated because your dog(s) never seem to remember the rules the following day?

Next time you find Fido right behind you while you peel the carrots for dinner remember this - 'herd' your dog out of the kitchen space by opening your arms, walk with your legs slightly apart as this makes you look bigger, and walk straight at them to make them move away from you. Keep the pressure on until they are where you want them, then take the pressure off by walking away. Stay silent and avoid eye contact. You will have to repeat this multiple times.

If you say anything during this process your dog has received attention from you and is effectively rewarded for being in the kitchen. This is why telling them to get out doesn't work.

In addition, never give food scraps from the bench to your dog, or they will wait for the food right beside you in the kitchen. Yes, this sounds obvious, but soooo many owners are guilty of this!!

03/07/2023

I've been saying this for a long time - pretty ownership of any species is a privilege not a right. Rehoming them creates trauma that takes time and skill to overcome. Think about THEM before bringing them into your home.

Where are we going wrong??? πŸ’”
Every single animal rescue and shelter in New Zealand at the moment is at capacity.
Every single pound are putting down good dogs that they would rather be rehoming.
Every single animal worker is burnt out, suffering compassion fatigue & wondering why they put themselves through this trauma every single day.
Yet people are still breeding. People are still throwing dogs away like garbage. People are still using rescues as a dumping ground so they can escape responsibility.
Our attitude needs to change NZ!
It is not your β€œright” to own a pet. Owning a pet is a privilege and a responsibility. A responsibility for the lifetime of that animal. Not β€œuntil”. Until you move. Until you start a family. Until you don’t have the time anymore. Until it’s no longer convenient.
I’m tired. We are all tired.
Gandhi said β€œThe greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”
Do better New Zealand !!!
