The four cats on the fence have their Christmas hats on (and the kitten has socks too), ready to greet the flood of guests in two weeks' time. The beds are made, the new catio is open for business, and the grapevines have spread their canopy inside to provide shade. Our team of seven hoomans are ready and waiting! ^k

Our own cat Svea just spent a week in Seaview Cattery while we were on hols. I let her out today when I got home and took her up to the house ... only to find her trying to break into the cattery again at dinner time! She's clearly our best PR rep. ^k

We are sad to farewell Baxter, a lovely, gentle tabby with huge golden eyes that he would fix on you, following you around to ask for treats. Baxter was one of our very first guests when we took over Seaview Cattery, and he will be treasured in our memories as a true gentleman cat who regularly visited us to stay. Our thoughts are with Baxter's owners as they mourn him. ^k

***Best news ever - Oscar is home!!***
Oscar's owner asks everyone to look out for him in Petone - he hitched a ride from his home in Lowry Bay on a tradie's ute which stopped in Manchester Street - it's not known whether he got off before then. Oscar is chocolate Burmese and is wearing a collar but no name tag. He is microchipped. Please look out for him - he will be frightened and hiding

Who knew our customers were such a trendy bunch? We have a spike in Seaview Cattery guest numbers due to people making a sneaky pre-Christmas trip to Auckland to see Pearl Jam and Coldplay. Yes we do have FOMO, but we will console ourselves with many kitty smooches ^k

We field several calls a day from people still looking for a cattery booking at Christmas, and I feel awful having to say we're full: this is the advice I try to give them:

1. It is worth going on lots of waiting lists (you can do ours on line) and it's important to specify your dates - cancellations do happen and your dates might just match exactly with one

2. Places come up later than you would expect - there's usually a bit of 'clearing' in the days and weeks right up to Xmas - people cancel with us because they've been accepted from a waiting list with a closer cattery: there's a domino effect in play which might work to your advantage (though don't rely on it, obvs)

3. If you're planning to drive to your holiday destination, check ahead for catteries on your route - rural areas are more likely to still have vacancies

4. Your local vet may have a list of pet-feeding contacts, including qualified animal carers - some only set up over the holiday period

5. Follow us on Facebook - if I have a cancellation that doesn't match anything on the waiting list, I'll put it out on Facebook

6. Other options you know already: a house sitter, or friend/neighbour popping in to feed

7. Mark your diary now to book your cat's 2025 Xmas stay before March - this is no exaggeration: we were fully booked at Easter for this Christmas

For the next fortnight traffic will be one way past Seaview Cattery - first North to South for a week, then the other way. If you're approaching from Petone/ the Hutt, it's fine - just pull in. Leaving, you can only turn left - then turn right down Port Road to get back to the big roundabout

If you're approaching us from Eastbourne and the bays, you'll need to first go down Port Road and go around the block, coming back to us from the north

All I can say is thank the lord they're not doing this at Christmas!

Today's adventure was taking a wee duckling to in Ohariu Valley. I found the duckling running around my kitchen. The cat was looking pretty smug, but the duckling was fine. WBRT has lots of wild birds and there were plenty of ducklings of all sizes for this one to grow up alongside. ^k

***Update*** Milly and Porj have been found lovely homes by the fabulous , who say: "Milly was adopted by a retired couple living on a massive rural lifestyle block where she will become their little princess! Porge has been adopted by a lovely single woman living in a quiet and bushy suburb in Wellington where he will be her number one man. Both cats seemed super relaxed and happy in their presence so I have no doubts they will be forever loved and very happy." And the original owner is getting herself sorted out to tale Molly back home soon, so it's good news all round.

******

It was a sad and unusual day yesterday: I had to take these three beauties, Molly, Milly and Porj to the Cats Protection League for re-homing as their owner has reluctantly surrendered them and has gone overseas. We had them at Seaview Cattery for two months and so they were very much at home in the cattery. There were tears. But I was really happy once I saw the lovely cat shelter: cosy, bright, clean and comfortable, with caring staff, and I know they will be relaxed there and be found wonderful homes.

Milly is shy, gentle and loving, and doesn't venture far. She would suit a quiet owner with no kids or other cats. Molly, a Persian Burmilla, is outrageously fluffy with the cutest bow-tie moustache: she's engaging and funny and loves attention. Porj is a confident, resilient big boy who loves the outdoors and is the boss cat. They haven't lived with dogs, so best re-homed without them. ^k

Mum, I am ready for my pick up. Where are you? I've had my breakfast, been brushed, and as soon as they got my carry cage out, I was in it like a shot, waiting for you to come and get me. It's been 20 days now, and while it's been great fun, and I've had the run of the place, I WANT TO COME HOME. Signed, Bilbo Baggins

Our own cat, Svea (Sveh-ya), is always fascinated by the cattery, as she spent three months there before moving up to the house.

Svea was bought as a kitten for a good friend of mine who had just been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. She succumbed to the disease two years later, leaving Svea with her husband who loved Svea dearly but kept having allergic reactions. He tried everything, from taking medication himself, to giving Svea anti-allergenic food, to no avail.

During a particularly bad bout of allergies he checked Svea into Seaview Cattery to give himself a break and deep clean the house to find out whether it really was the cat causing his symptoms. Unfortunately it was.

Luckily, Svea was rehomed with us. It is lovely to have the cat that meant so much to my friend (Svea even visited her in the hospice).

During her first few days of freedom, at feeding time Svea would head down to the cattery and try to get in for supper! Now she just visits to get the catmint that grows outside.

We are sad to note the passing of two lovely regulars Pablito and Atticus who have gone over the rainbow bridge, both at the grand old age of nearly 16. We will miss seeeing them both. Our sympathies to the owners and the remaining cat Mable who is coming to stay with us soon ^k

Whenever our new heated winter quarters are full and we have overflow guests, they get either an electric heating pad or a hot water bottle. Here's tonight's haul, looking strangely like a delivery of ducklings ^k
