It definitely pays to brush your cats. This hairy haul is from just 15 minutes of brushing a short haired ginger (yes, short) who was matted on one side, and who simply loved being groomed - he was in ecstasy. His undercoat was quite thick and came out in clumps with a fine wire paddle brush. Now, a quick daily once-over will keep him tidy, coolerand more comfortable. Save your sofas: brush a cat today! ^katie

We love happy endings: after an epic 255 days (9 months) at Seaview Cattery , long haired tabby cat Emma went today to her lovely new home with our staff member Em (both pictured, plus bonus Noodles)

Emma came to us in June as a kitten for only a few weeks, but the owner had an unexpectedly lengthy stay overseas for medical treatment, with no certain date of return. The owner decided last week that it was kinder to put Emma up for adoption, and was thrilled that Em had become so attached to her (it is a hazard of the job)

Emma can now climb real trees, having learnt on our indoor grapevines, and can catch mice freely, without having to wait for the single most stupid mouse in New Zealand to wander into the cattery (yes, that actually happened) ^k

We are so sorry to hear that Luna has gone over the rainbow bridge after being diagnosed with lymphoma, one of the most common cat cancers, at the age of about six.

Luna has stayed many times with us, and was here over Christmas, which is when this photo was taken. She stayed again in January and we thought she was perhaps a bit quieter than usual. On the last night of her stay she didn't eat, was lethargic, and had blood in her stools. We recommended a vet visit to her owners. Later that week the owners kindly let us know that, after veterinary investigation and advice, they had made the hard, but ultimately compassionate, decision to say goodbye to Luna rather than let her suffer any more.

We will miss seeing the lovely Luna so often, and we send aroha to her owners ^Katie

This morning a small, scared cat forced its way through its carry cage mesh in just seconds. A couple and their young son had just arrived to collect her, and I put her in the carrier and zipped it up. Moments later she was out! Fortunately, it happened at the reception desk, not outside on the way to the car. Check your carry cages please, and if your cat is at all scared or feisty, consider getting a plastic or metal one instead of the fabric holdall ones, to save my heart! Also, covering the cage with a blanket helps calm cats down in transit ^Katie

Sometimes a paper bag is all you need for a good time, according to Emma who has been at Seaview Cattery for 230 days and has another few months to go. She's a lovely cat, who always greets us at the door; she adores Temptations and having her dinner on the step ladder ^Katie

Be kind to us today as we navigate one of the busiest days for cats being picked up - our own little Tonkinese cat, Svea, was run over and killed on the road outside this morning. We will miss her little face terribly, and may be a bit out of sorts today. ^Katie

We are so sorry to hear about the death of Doug Wilson, Seaview Cattery's previous owner, on 21 December 2024. Not two months before that, we saw Doug looking relaxed and happy on his return from a long-awaited trip back to Scotland with Laurel, while we looked after their sweet little cat Bugs: precious cargo indeed.

Doug and Laurel were very kind to us when we took on the cattery in January 2023, showing us the ropes with patience and thoroughness. They were so relieved that the cattery would continue operating, and we kept in regular contact with them over the past two years, meeting up for dinner to share stories of cats and owners old and new.

We wish aroha to Laurel, and to the family
