Meet Eddie! ❤️
Eddie is available for adoption as sadly his owners couldn't look after him anymore. He is approximately 14years old. Eddie would thrive in a single cat household. He is a neutered male, domestic short hair, microchipped, recently vaccinated and up to date on flea and worm treatments. At the vets.
We’ve talked about the before, but what about the during? What can WE do to help minimise your cat's stress while visiting us at Pet Vet Lower Hutt?
We take pride in providing our feline friends with cat friendly handling and we aim to reduce stress as much as possible.
We highly encourage all cat owners utilise our dedicated cat corner whilst waiting in reception. This area has a feliway diffuser, carrier stands and feliway sprayed blankets to drape over your carrier. Cats do not like to be placed on the floor! When possible, please avoid leaving your cats on the floor, instead place their carrier on one of the carrier holders or chairs provided.
We have created this space with the aim of reducing stress in the clinic and to aid in the separation between cats and dogs.
All of our staff here at Pet Vet are knowledgeable in cat friendly handling and strive to provide your cats with a positive experience while being in the clinic.
In the hospital, we have four wards dedicated solely to our feline patients, these are equipped with large cages, feliway diffusers and hidey-holes for a ‘safe space’ to sleep.
Pro Tip:
If your cat is staying with us in clinic, please feel free to bring a piece of home with them, whether that be their favourite blanket, toy, food bowl or clothing item…. anything is welcome (preferably named)!
Does your pet want to be a hero?
We are on the lookout for more blood donors to add to our list of life savers!
Dog criteria:
• 2 - 8 years old
• Over 25 kilograms
• Not on any long term medications
• Fit and healthy
• Friendly and calm in clinic
• Has not had a litter of puppies before
• Up to date on vaccinations
Cat criteria:
• 2 - 8 years old
• Over 5 kilograms
• Not on any long term medications
• Fit and healthy
• Friendly and calm in clinic
• Has not had a litter of kittens before
• Up to date on vaccinations
Occasionally we see patients that would greatly benefit from a blood transfusion, this can be due to an array of things. Blood can not be stored for long periods of time, so when we find ourselves in these situations it is great to have a list of heroes to call on.
If your dog or cat meets the criteria above, please speak to our lovely reception staff to start the process!

Carrier tips.
Bringing your cat to the vet? Here are some helpful carrier tips to try for next time!
1. Place a familiar blanket in the bottom of the carrier to help your cat feel more comfortable.
2. Drape a blanket or towel over the carrier to help them feel less vulnerable.
3. Make sure the carrier is secure in the car, ideally in the footwell behind the front seats. This also aids in less movement.
4. Avoid carrying the carrier from the handle, instead support it from underneath. This will help minimise movement and keep it level.
Pro tip (and we do sell this in clinic):
If your cat is a frequent flier, or known to be stressed in the car, we recommend you try ‘Feliway travel spray’. Spray this on their blanket 15 minutes before travel and let the magic speak for itself!

Choosing the right carrier.
There are many types of cat carriers around and today we are here to help you choose the right one for your cat!
Fabric, plastic, backpacks, harness, which one to choose? Carriers need to be sturdy, escape proof and safe.
Plastic sturdy front loaders such as the one displayed below are highly recommended. These have slats on the side to provide great air circulation, they also have the ability to separate by a removable lid, this makes it easier for the vet to examine your cat while they stay in their carrier.
These types of carriers are ideal as they provide a safe space, they are not overly exposed which can leave our cats feeling vulnerable and they do not create excessive movement when carried and supported from underneath.
Head down to your local pet store and pick one of these up!
Our Tue tip with you tomorrow 😻
Getting cats used to their carrier.
Who’s cat bolts under the bed when you pull out the dreaded carrier? Visiting your vets can be a stressful time for our feline friends, there are many ways we as owners can make this experience easier on them!
Cats love to feel in control and have a sense of familiarity. By using a carrier as a part of ‘furniture’, we can help our cats feel more familiar and safe whilst creating positive experiences with something that is normally seen as a negative.
We recommend that you use the carrier as a safe space or bed for your cat to cuddle up in. Leave a familiar blanket in the bottom of the carrier and remove the door or lid, this will create a more welcoming environment for your cat to explore.
We all love the feeling of familiarity and being comfortable in our environment, so do our cats!
As promised we are about to launch our series of information to keep your feline family happy. Watch tomorrow for the first of our Tuesday tips 🤩

Today is Pet fire safety Day! We've put together some things to think about in order to keep your pet safe from danger. 🚒
Sometimes when a pet is in pain, you may see subtle changes in their behaviour. Any changes in behaviour can be a sign of pain or other health issues and we recommend taking your furry family to see one of our veterinary team.
For our older pets, it is important that they are kept warm and comfortable during the cooler months. If you notice them struggling to move, it could be age-related diseases such as arthritis. If you are wanting more information on ways to keep your pet warm or have a senior pet that you would like to discuss, contact us today.
There is plenty of evidence to support that cuddling your cat is beneficial for your health. Make sure you hug your feline today. If your cat isn't into hugs - perhaps a high 5 or a pat! #HugYourCatDay 😻
