Little Roxy here has landed on her feet! she has the coolest big bro and the nicest family who have helped her settle into her goofy self very fast. Roxy is already super well loved despite only being on trial for 4 days!

Roxy wasn't in our care very long but we had the right home lined up after she was signed over to us. She's a happy go lucky dog with plenty of pep in her step. She'll keep her older brother Bandit young with all of her play and mischief!

*** On Trial ***

"Diesel", 6 month old, male, heeler x

This guy came into our care last week after he was found covered in diesel from nose to paws. He had 3 medicated baths at the vets and was a star patient and loved every ounce of attention. Since being in our care no one has come forward to claim him.

Diesel has been a pup that has adapted incredibly well to shelter life. He takes everything in his stride and is super eager to please. He loves meeting new people and is a happy noodle with every dog he's come across so far. Diesel is super forward, friendly and confident and takes it all in without a care in the world 😍

He's a bright, responsive and eager pup who's keen on food and slowly learning what toys are but is mostly driven by praise - he just loves his people!

He's met Elsa and has been hanging out with Coal today. He has beautiful behaviour with other dogs and is more on the submissive side of things. He does display alot of pestering appeasement behaviors (which Coal has been overly patient to today). But is respectful when told enough is enough. He will need someone to remind him of boundaries as he's still young and forgets once he's been told off.

He hasn't met our cat yet, but he hasn't shown any signs of prey drive so far and I don't forsee any issues with him being placed with a dog-savvy, confident cat. (So long as initial interactions are managed appropriately)

Diesel hasn't shown signs of any timidness so far. He's quiet when in the exercise yards and in his crate, in fact I don't think I've heard him bark yet! He is great at differentiating what is a toy and what is not a toy and is respectful of furniture. Diesel does appear to be toilet trained as well. Diesel can sit, he will follow a food lure, will recall and walks well on leash!

Diesel's ideal home would be with a family who are busy bodies like himself and are active. Diesel is super sweet and friendly, he would make a great hiking or running companion (once he's fully grown). It would do him some good getting into an obediance class and learning some general skills and continuing his socialization.
Diesel can be rehomed to a house with a dog savvy cat. Diesel could also be rehomed to a house with another dog, however the other dog would need to provide fair and appropriate corrections to ensure the ideal home and fit on both ends. Equally we think Diesel would be a perfect single dog companion.

The usual fine print/requirements apply.

And another big thanks to SPCA Wellington/Wairarapa for taking on this little guy.

He is a cracking little dog who loves people and was really good with our dogs and the cat he met recently.

Good luck Chase, we're sure you'll find a new home very quickly 😀

Big thanks to our good friends at the SPCA Wellington/Wairarapa for taking on our beautiful Star. She was surrendered to us a whopping 141 days ago after her owner realised they just didn't have the time to give her what she needed.

Speaking of whopping - when she first came in, she tipped the scales at 67kg! She was huge. A female Rottweiler would/should generally be around 45kg.

As we had no interest in her initially, we asked if anyone was able to foster her while we waited for the perfect home. We were contacted by a wonderful couple who have adopted from us before and they have been fostering her since Nov last year.

We honestly cannot thank them enough for all they have done for her. Not only have they provided her with the attention & enrichment she was lacking in her previous home, but they commited to her feeding and exercise regime and when weighed today - she was 47.7kg! She has also had consitent training and boundaries and now walks beautifully on a lead - rather than pulling like a freight train!

They loved her to bits, but weren't in a position to take her on full time.

We hope that her new home presents itself via the SPCA very soon. She is an absolutely beautiful, soft natured girl who adores people - children especially, and will make an awesome family pet.

*On Trial *

"Exo", Heading dog x, male, 2 years old, medium sized

Our friend Exo here was surrendered to us recently as he wasn't coping entirely with his new living arrangement. Exo has been a much loved pet for the entire 2 years of his life. It's clear that his owners have cared and loved Exo as well as put a lot of effort into appropriate socialisation and exercise to keep this guy happy. Exo has come from a home with children and where he happily got a run in most days and then enjoyed lazing the backyard. Exo is an absolute smooch! he's super cuddly and a real leaner!! any opportunity for attention he'll politely take it. Exo is very quiet and chilled out. No one has heard Exo bark yet (even his previous owners!) and he shows no signs of having separation anxiety.

Exo has been around other dogs and is very respectful. We introduced him to Elsa and another small male dog and he went in for a quick sniff then completely disengaged. We've been told and have witnessed that he's great out in public on leash as he will walk by another dog without engagement unless invited to.

Exo is keen on fetch and is toy and treat motivated. He does know sit, lie down, drop it and shake. Exo does do a bit of p*e marking as he is still entire, however he is booked to be desexed very soon which will hopefully fix this. He does show signs of interest in small animals and have been told that he will chase cats. This behaviour in combination with his breed we will not be looking to place Exo in a home with a cat.

Exo would make the ideal companion for someone who is looking for a great family dog but is also quite active during the week. Exo has been a great running buddy for his previous family and would like to continue his running streak. Exo is a dog who can cope being home during the day while people work but would like some fuss made over him in the evening. Exo could be placed in a home with another female dog but we think he'd be just fine on his own.

The usual fine print/requirements apply.

Lots of our adoptions have been wrapped up lately (pun intended!), one in particular has stood out.

Our mate Tony, who wasn't suited for normal pet life due to being a bit of a boof-head with a lot of drive, has headed off to work for the Corrections NZ this week. They were blown away by his temperament and play drive. Fingers crossed he'll be a great addition to their team!

This would not have been at all possible without the help of Luke from The Hound Way who has taught Tony some life skills and how to harness his drive for his new found working life over the past few months.

Tony is still to be renamed with something a little bit more... sturdy... for his new life. Go well Tony!

As we lead into the holiday season we're lucky to receive a few updated pictures and stories of dogs that have been adopted from us recently or from many years ago.

We love hearing how they're going and seeing how happy they are in their forever homes. It reminds us what an awesome community we have surrounding us here at Animal Services.

Here's a few we'd love to share 🐕

Huey, adopted December 2023 as a young puppy, now a solid, happy teenager!

Theo, adopted June 2024 and enjoying his fun and busy life alongside Nizzie

Jack, adopted July 2024 and is a happy, affectionate and goofy boy

Bella, adopted 2015 a gentle and loving old soul

*ADOPTED :-) *

"Tony" (previously Benji), Labrador x, 1.8 years old, Male, recently desexed

Tony, originally named Benji, came into our care after being found wandering. Although his previous owner was notified, they were unable to take him back due to housing constraints and admitted he was a bit of a handful.

When Benji became Hutt City Council property we knew the right person to take him on. In the kennels he was quite the handful (mostly out of frustration), but nothing shy of happy CONSTANTLY! we reached out to Luke at The Hound Way who was on the look out for a dog just like Benji; high drive, happy and sound in temperament.

Benji went off on trial and soon became Tony. Tony still can be a full -on crazy guy, but Luke has taught him some valuable life skills which will need to be harnessed and practiced in his new home. We are so grateful to Luke and all the exceptional work he's put into Although Tony has made significant progress, it’s unfortunate that things didn’t quite work out. Luke has created a special adoption video to showcase Tony, highlighting both his quirks and his potential.

Key Points from Luke's Video:

❌ Cat-Free Home: Tony cannot live with cats.
✅ Suitable with Other Dogs: Tony can live with a balanced adult dog who will set boundaries but also enjoy playtime. He can also thrive as an only dog.
✅ Extremely Resilient: Tony is sound and unbothered by most things, with a hard-headed but fun-loving personality.
✅ Great with Kids: Tony adores children but doesn’t quite understand his size yet. Homes with children aged 8+ would be ideal.
❕Tony is a dog who will need a job, think obedience, fly-agility, scenting, man trailing. Now that he's gotten a bit more fit he's up for the challenge.
✅ Social and Loving: Tony loves people and other dogs, but he’s learning to manage his excitement. Consistent practice will be essential.
✅ Crate-Trained: Tony is great in a crate and is learning how to settle. He’ll need a calm, confident handler to continue this progress.

Tony's ideal home would be cat free and with a family who are experienced with working dogs and are actively participating in dog sports. Tony would also double as a great hiking buddy over holidays and a great friend to children in the house or within the family. If there’s another dog in the home, they should enjoy Tony’s high-energy personality and be capable of setting boundaries. Tony thrives in a structured environment with routine, training, and plenty of mental and physical stimulation.

If you feel like you can provide Tony with a great home please get in touch with us via our JotForm https://www.jotform.com/213197866377067

We were recently contacted by Elizabeth from Ted's Space to see if our shelter pupsters might be interested in being the next recipients of some very lovingly made snuffle mats, tug toys and peanut butter/banana K9 cookies.

TedsSpace is an incredible charity that "provides animal assisted support for students to create an environment that will support their learning."

Sam and I headed along to collect these incredible handmade toys, mats and cookies in person recently. Coal came along too and gave the cookies and toys a big paws up! He pulled out all his best tricks too. We knew he'd made a good impression, when one girl ran off to class after our session exclaiming "that was the best morning EVER!" 😆

We had a lovely time sitting with the children and told them a bit about what we do and answered questions they had.

This really is an incredible charity. You're welcome to visit their website if you'd like to find out more about what they do.....

Thanks again team Ted's Space and the very talented students from Fergusson Intermediate 😀

*** OUT ON TRIAL :-) ***

"Jessie" is still with us and waiting for her perfect forever home. This beautiful little girl is truly happiness personified 😍

She was found roaming a couple of weeks ago and no one has called looking for her.

She has a delightfully happy, confident, forward temperament and approaches everything and everyone with enthusiasm by the bucket load.

She adores people, and while she can be a little full on and jumpy to start with, she soon settles and happily lies next to/on you for some cuddles.

We know very little about her, but at 4.5 months, with her confident, happy attitude, we think she'll fit in to most types of homes. She is clearly great with other dogs, so a home with an existing, older dog would be great for her - so long as that one was open to some play!

She'll be fine in a home with a dog savvy cat and a controlled/well managed first introduction.

She is quickly learning to sit and seems keen to learn. We would expect that a new owner would sign up for some puppy classes for training and socialisation.

She will thrive with a loving, active family where she can get out on daily walks and ideally head along to some puppy/obedience classes. She will make a great family dog and once shes matured a bit, would no doubt love accompanying you on hikes/tramps.

She will be spayed, vaccinated, chipped, registered, wormed and flead as part of her adoption. Adoption cost is around $300-350.

The usual fine print/requirements apply.

Our beautiful (not quite so big anymore) Star, is doing great in her foster home, but is still on the lookout for her perfect forever home. This is what her amazing, committed foster Mum & Dad have to say about her.......

Star: A Stellar Companion
Meet Star!

This 58kg (was 67kg when she came in) bundle of joy is looking for her forever home. She's a gentle giant with a heart of gold. Star is:

• A true sweetheart: Affectionate, loves touch and intelligent.

• Independent: Can be left alone for reasonable periods but would much prefer company.

• Easy going: Calms down quickly and adapts to change.

• Playful: Loves to play but knows how to be gentle.

• Well-behaved: Isn’t very ‘lick-y’, fully toilet trained and respects your belongings. She doesn’t sn**ch food or counter surf, and we have taught her to wait for her dinner.

• A social butterfly: Friendly with people and other friendly dogs. I remove her from the situation if there is an ill-behaved or unsocialised dogs as she is so big and something tells me she doesn’t put up with poorly behaved dogs.

While Star is a wonderful dog, she does have a few quirks:

• Bouncy: She loves to jump when excited. She doesn’t jump on you but could knock over elderly people or very small kids. She is learning to contain her excitement and keep ‘four paws’ on the floor.

• Pulls on the leash: She's eager to meet other dogs, so leash training is ongoing.

• Too interested in cats: Star adores her beagle foster brother but is too fascinated by the cat. She will need a cat free home.

• Weight: Star has lost 9 kgs since coming into our care. She still has 8-10 kg to go.

If you're looking for a loyal and loving companion, and could provide the calm stable training Star needs, she could be the perfect match for you!

You can read her full bio here......

GOING ON TRIAL! 14/11

*Available for adoption* ***She is not suitable for a home with children. ***

"Zoe" 7-year old, female, Maltese x (EXTRA small)

Zoe came into us a few weeks ago and is now looking for a quiet place to spend her days. Zoe came into us in good condition, and had clearly been well-loved. She is a mere 3kg in weight and up to coals knees in height. Zoe has a sweet yet sassy personality.

Zoe has been out on foster with one of our ACO's who has kindly given her a fresh cut and given her time to settle in. She’s a typical small dog with a big personality. She loves attention and people. Her immediate response to someone reaching out to pet her is to roll over and show her belly. Though she tends to be more on the submissive and shy side, Zoe also has plenty of sass

In typical fashion, Zoe thinks she runs the roost. She is a great guard dog and will alert bark to people approaching the house and car doors closing shut. She's not overly fond of neighbourhood cats (or in house cats) and will chase them as if she were double their size.

She’s generally okay with other dogs but can become bossy if they’re too energetic or she’s not in the mood. Zoe does tend to keep to herself but will co-exist if asked to.

At 7 years old, Zoe is still full of life—she gets the occasional "zoomies" and loves playing with toys. She’s also an expert at being your shadow, always happy to follow you around or curl up at your feet as a footwarmer while you sit at your desk.

While not overly food-driven, she knows basic commands like "sit," "down," "off," "on your bed," and settles well when asked. Zoe walks exceptionally well on the leash and does enjoy her daily walk around the block. However, she does resource guard high-value treats like pigs' ears and chews, so she isn’t suitable for homes with children. Zoe can be easily startled and is not comfortable with sudden movements or loud noises.

Zoe’s ideal home would be with someone who leads a calm, quiet lifestyle—preferably someone who is retired or works from home full time and can be around most of the day. She’d do well in a home with another older, low-energy dog who’s okay with sharing their person. Zoe is not suited for homes with children under 16-years or cats.

We realise being a tiny fluff ball she will be extremely popular, so feel free to contact us via the application form below and tell us as much as you can about the type of home you can offer. Anyone interested must be available to come and meet her in person at Animal Services.

The usual fine print/requirements apply.
