Here is the 3-MONTH UPDATE for AMANDA WILSON and TURBO, the first of 14 combinations that are competing in the ULTRA-MOX FREEDOM TO FRIENDSHIP STALLION CHALLENGE at Equifest.
About Turbo:
Turbo had a month off in July due to me being away, but upon getting home and back into work he has been so easy and straightforward, as if he’d never had any time off at all. Before I left, he was at the stage where I had haltered him in the paddock for the first time and I’d taken him for half a dozen lead adventures. Since getting home he has moved into a big hill paddock with his best friend Tempest, has been on a few small, fun adventures, can be touched all over and have his legs picked up, has worn a saddle pad and surcingle, has just started the process of loading onto the truck and has also been backed.
These sessions are always very short, maybe 10-25 minutes in general so I am very happy with his progress. He is proving to be quite a confident, cheeky boy who absolutely loves playing rough and tumble with the other boys. Sometimes I have to remind him gently that I am not a c**t as well, especially when I was teaching him how to pick up his feet. When I touched behind his knee he must have thought I was trying to play with him, because he’d cheekily try to nip me behind my knee in response, with the same behaviour c**ts use when playing in the paddock.
I don’t have any grand plans for him in the next few weeks. The goal is just to do whatever he is ready for, although he is booked in to be gelded and I would love to get him confidently loading onto the truck.
About Amanda:
Amanda grew up competing from a young age, and was showjumping at Grand Prix level by the age of 13. In 2009, she crossed paths with Showtym Viking, her pony of a lifetime, and together they went on to win many of the nation’s biggest showjumping titles.
Over the years, she has gained a reputation for starting and producing horses through to the highest levels of showjumping, and her career highlights include winning the Pony of the Year, National Pony Grand Prix Championships, 5-Year-Old Series and 7-Year-Old Horse of the Year, as well as placings in the Olympic Cup in 2015 and 2016.
Amanda is also a popular clinician, having taught thousands of riders across the country during retreats and clinics, and at New Zealand’s biggest equestrian events. She is also a well-known entertainer and has hosted night shows at Equidays, Equifest and Equitana, and is a sought-after motivational speaker.
This week she celebrated the publication of her first book Showtym Viking, which she co-wrote with Kelly.
Amanda is a full-time professional rider, and from her property, Blackstone Farm, she breeds, trains and competes a team of top-level showjumpers. In her spare time, she writes, travels the world in search of adventure, and studies the effects of trauma in both humans and horses.
