Just an update on the pacas for those who might follow me. BJ one of my stud boys has gone to Timaru to join one of my girls and one of his offspring. See photo of him in truck - he was was keen to get there and hopped in without any persuasion. Galaxy the other stud boy has gone to friends in Carterton - he mated with 2 of their girls last year - the first of whom had a beautiful boy a few weeks ago. We don't know about the other one as she is not due yet. I also mated him once with a girl that I sold thinking her not pregnant but lo and behold to their amazement a wee cria appeared in the paddock a couple of weeks ago. They were a bit shell shocked but are now very enthusiastic about the bundle of fun they now have.

Zack the last cria born here at Gallin Farm won ribbons in the Central Region colourbration Show in November - photo attached with his new owner who is very happy with him. He shows great promise.

So now it's just the cat and me. In contrast to last summer when it rained the whole time this one is super hot and dry. I am very grateful to have a brown lawn that I don't have to mow 😄.

I am happy to have brought pleasure to so many people over the last 8 years - enjoyed it all and met wonderful people from all o ver the world - my alpacas have all found lovely homes - the girls producing babies and the boys doing their thing.

All the best for the future everyone

Sue
PS I might post some paintings soon 🥰

The last 2 girls Kimi (my poster girl) and Rochelle were collected last week. They were very reluctant to go. My 2 pet boys (in background) have been sold but will be here for another month. Just my 2 stud boys to be sold. The paddocks are very quiet.

Gallin Farmstay is now officially closed. My last guest was on Saturday night. My baby Zack (now 8 weeks old) and his mother Esmeralda will be leaving tomorrow along with my 2 female visitors. There will be just 2 girls left - they have been sold and are waiting to be collected. That will leave my 2 beautiful pet boys and my 2 stud males - both of whom have been working very hard to get 4 girls pregnant. The boys are waiting for a buyer.

The last cria to be born here arrived last night in the rain. He is very tiny but "beautifully formed". Alpacas are supposed to deliver their babies in fine weather between 8 and 4pm. However the message got lost with Esmeralda as this is the second time she has flouted the rules!! Fortunately the sun came out today - so baby was able to warm up.

Finally 2 months late the pacas have been shorn. Some have been waiting for this so that they can go to their new homes. Unfortunately it was too late for one of my little boys who developed a huge abcess that burst and had to be put down on Thursday - very upsetting.
My 'poster girl' has been allowed to keep her hair-do but all the others have been re-styled!! They all look very strange with their big woolly coats removed. I have 2 pregnant girls this year - one is due in about 4 weeks so watch this space and the other one is leaving for a new home in the South Island tomorrow.

Riku has joined the little boys for the time being. The vet is coming to certify him today as a stud male. He has been sold to an alpaca farm in Hastings where he can try to get some of the girls pregnant! He will be leaving here once he has been shorn. Shearing coming up soon.

Sun at last- beautiful day and 'halter training' must start again. All the 'boys' wore their halters for a while in the yard yesterday. Next step - they must learn to walk on a lead and behave themselves - easier said than done.

Beautiful morning & sun came out after more days of heavy rain - 8 girls & 6 small boys in yard - not sure if the girls are looking at the boys (stud males) across the driveway or the neighbour's cat who came to say hello. Around midday the weather turned to custard again & now more heavy rain.

Two more girls left on Saturday to go to their new home. Herd nearly all black now. The 3 female babies have been sold but are still here. One will be going next week (with her mother) and the other 2 in a few weeks time. However there are 6 boys. They are nearly ready to be weaned (taken away from their mothers) - there will be much weeping and wailing.

It has been a sad month at Gallin Farm. Baby #9 had to be put down - it was another boy. One of the paca mothers died in late March due to a nasty parasite that strikes very quickly and within a few days the animal is dead. She left a 3 month old baby behind. He refused to take a bottle and has just survived on grass and hay with a lot of 'nuts' and chaff as well. He is small but very cute. Baby # 11 arrived and could not breathe very well or suckle from her mum. In spite of pouring milk into her with a syringe she died after a few days. Her mother was my best girl and she and I grieved together - it was a girl.

Still bottle feeding Binky (he is the one with the white nose) - he will be weaned with the others from the first batch born in December.

Lots of guests as well have been keeping me busy. Two of the girls and two 2 year old boys have been sold but have not been delivered yet. Have added some photos of some of the babies looking very grown up in the 'dust bowl' where they like to roll and get very dirty and Kimi who lost her baby.

Some of my beautiful boys - they were all shorn in January to try to ensure clean fleeces in November so they don't look very woolly yet. They are all for sale as I am downsizing.

The latest arrival was introduced to the 'big' boys yesterday - they thought she was a new toy. She is very small and has a coat on because the weather has been cold and wet. Also photos of some of the other 9 babies - there are now 6 boys and 3 girls

Too much water here - farm across river flooded and on this side cut off from Masterton by flood waters across road in multiple places. Guests couldn't get through yesterday and today just as bad. My 8 babies wet and cold even with coats on. All tucked up in shed the last few nights but yard flooded and everything WET!

Have been a bit busy but #7 (another boy - see photo) arrived yesterday with the help of a local vet - just got a wee bit stuck but all good in the end & mother and baby well. Six boys and one girl - whew! Here are the first 3 boys who are creating mayhem in the paddock - could only manage to get 3 of them to stand still long enough for a photo. Unfortunately one of the mothers has rejected her baby and I am full-time bottle feeding him and desperately trying to integrate him into the herd. He has plenty of friends to play with.
