THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX..... desperately in need of a float to get the girls out to some outings this season but am financially challenged (husband and bank manager won't let me buy one). So if anyone has one sitting around that would consider a lease. Alternatively bank manager and husband would be even happier with less horses so keen to trade on a young horse 🐎 πŸ€”

So horses sorted thankfully!! What people could not see is the sheep yards that make sorting easier 😊

Whispers – nothing new in the NZ equestrian scene but as I am still hearing whispers around a question that is on many peoples lips while others that have no idea.

It has been a hard 18 months here at Longspring for a number of reasons while horses and children will allways throw curve balls we have been faced with a fair share.

During cyclone Gabrielle we lost our bridge and only access to the back of the farm at a time that meant I was stuck with over 40 horses up the front on around 20ha so very quickly paddocks turned to mud swamps and feeding out took most of the day. Thankfully we did receive some support from ESNZ’s Cyclone Funds which was a huge help.

With the mud behind us from Winter 2023 we are now facing down that aftermath of a major drought (after Feb I did say I would not complain about a lack of rain so this is more of a description of consequential flow on 😊) Even now in the middle of winter we are super dry with little to no grass growth and dams with barely any water in them.

This has put huge pressure on all stock and us to keep everything feed and healthy.

I had planned on having a novel horse sale which has now been postponed due to the drought with a plan to revisit in the spring….. but if you are after any thing before then get in touch there are some stunning youngsters coming through.

So what are the whispers you ask? ….. well for those of you that have not heard my father Rupert made the call in January last year to leave the family farm for a life on the road skiing in the South Island something he loves! He has apparently chosen to leave the equestrian scene entirely which is sad given it has been a life long passion of his.

We were not seeing eye to eye on the horse management and this eventually came to a head. While it has been hard, we are all stronger for it and Mum is fine and still on the farm.

This is not a pity post … far from it! We have some new vigour and exciting gaols and plans for the future – especially now that all the kids are at school!!

Working with this 4yr old filly is pure pleasure she is broken in and take everything in her stride a true gem. First time ever being lunged and covered - ordinarily the lunging etc happens first but the breakers had an opening, so she went earlier πŸ™‚. Did not bat an eye to either - very intelligent and willing.

One thing I really enjoy is looking at the old bloodlines and how influential they still are.

"Almost anyone who has even the faintest knowledge of jumping bloodlines knows the name Furioso. Furioso’s son Furioso II is the most influential stallion in modern sporthorse breeding."

Many years ago we were lucky to pick up a older TB stallion that had been standing locally - Watchman. Watchman has impecable Sport Horses Bloodline including, Oncidium, Precipitation and Bay Ronald. What we had not realised at the time is that his dam line goes back to Maureen (the dam of Furioso).

One distingisable trait of Furioso was the splash of white on his belly something that we see coming through our line to this day.

While we did not have Watchman for long we have retained a son Watchamacallit LS out of a Distelfink mare that is producing some stunning progeny.
