Lambs are growing well with the sun on their backs and grass underfoot.

The question comes as weaning looms near, how will I manage parasites to grow lambs well this summer?

Start with the basics first: service drench guns, make sure they are calibrated properly, check expiries on left over product and put in orders with your agents.

The key to success is setting up “clean” feed for weaned lambs, and maintaining a low level of worm larvae contamination with refugia. That’s great- how?

1. Use an effective drench
2. Cross graze with adult stock/cattle
3. Utilise crops and new grass

Remember that faecal egg counts are your friend for helping with decision making when it comes to drenching.

Do you need to drench? They can give an idea of how bad the burden is before deciding to drench or not.

Does my drench work? Do a FEC 10 days after drenching and find out for sure.

If you have any questions about parasite management, product choices or crop options get in touch with our team of vets and agents.

Guy Fawkes is now over but there is no doubt celebrations will continue.

Below is a video of Toby showing classic signs of stress from fireworks. We have thought of a few ways to help minimise any stress your pets may have.

We do suggest if your pets are struggling severely with the fireworks or have a history of anxiety then you book in a vet consult asap. The vet may be able to prescribe anti-anxiety medication or a short/ long term protocol to get through.

Please contact us on 06 377 3819 to book an appointment or email us at the [email protected] if this is the case.

See below for our tips... 💥💥💥

Enrichment 🐾

*Tire them out during the day.
*Take them for a swim
*Running
*A long walk
*Games or tricks
*If your pets are elderly, we suggest using some form of mental enrichment to tire them out. This may be puzzle feeders, snuffle matts or Kong’s.

Create a safe space! 🫶

*Confining them to their usual crate.
*Closing the curtains in your home
*Playing music, the television or white noise to help drown out fireworks
*Spraying pheromone sprays like Adaptil or Feliway into their bedding!
*Using a long-term pheromone outlet like a diffuser! *These can be placed within the home at any power outlet and can take up to 7 days to be fully effective. PLEASE NOTE! You cannot smell the pheromones being emitted only the species of animal can.
*ANOTHER long-term product which is AMAZING is the Adaptil spray! These again emit pheromones to calm your dog.

TREATS, TREATS AND MORE TREATS 🎊
We currently stock the drooly range at Keinzleys! These are a high reward treat, and dogs seem to love them! These are best to feed during periods of calmness. If they remain calm feed them a treat. They can also be used as a form of distraction from sudden bangs.

Has your pet got an itch yet? 🌱

Spring is the time environmental allergies can really start to flare up in cats and dogs. Allergies can start by your pet being in contact with pollens, grasses, plants, dusts and other materials.

Allergies in cats and dogs can present as the below symptoms

Itchy ears
Chewing at feet or stained brown feet
Hair loss- Balding around their eyes or areas of the
body
Scratching excessively- which can lead to red
sores and infection
Licking
Swelling around the face
Coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath
Runny nose
Red eyes

What to do if your pet is suffering?

Number 1: Make sure you don’t have fleas. One bite can induce a flea allergy. If the itch continues then this may indicate there is something in the environment triggering your pet to itch.

Allergens can stick to your pet’s coat particularly the paws, belly, ears, eyes and up their nose. If you think they have been exposed to something that may make them itchy we recommend giving them a bath with a soothing shampoo, grooming regularly to help remove built up pollutants and paying a visit to the vet for a consult.
